The Mourningstar Memorial; lest we forget

The Mourningstar Memorial :rose:

Hello, everyone. I’m starting this thread to compile any and all suggested upgrades to the Mourningstar that’ve remained relevant in alphabetical order. Yes, this was inspired by @brosgw 's “The Crafting Memorial; lest we forget”, and I most certainly hope for both of our threads to one day become obsolete so that players can finally have the optimal Darktide experience.

• The Mourningstar Catwalk :mirror_ball:
This’d be an emote system for the player to show that they’re too sexy for their shirt, too sexy for their shirt and so sexy it hurts. Y’know… like in Vermintide 2, where it’s accessible whether the player’s in the Keep or in a match.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Compendium :open_book:
This’d be a Tome for the player to research allies, archetypes, concept art, enemies, Darktide Short Stories and weapons à la The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Glossary.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Defence :shield:
This’d be at least one Defence Mission set on the Mourningstar, most likely against a Scab boarding party.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Expansion :building_construction:
This’d be a generalised expansion of the Mourningstar… perhaps to allow access to the Hangar Bay or room for the other suggestions?

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Gangs :crossed_swords:
This’d be a “guild” system in which the player would be able to join one out of a variety of gangs, all of which’d be dedicated to different goals.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Holidays :spiral_calendar:
This’d be a set of festive events implemented with the intention of spicing things up around the Mourningstar.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Perspectives :eyes:
This’d be the player’s ability to swap between first and third person perspectives while they’re on the Mourningstar.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Quarters :bed:
This’d be a crew quarters featuring a private quarters on the Mourningstar for the player to decorate. On a side note, Zola’s private quarters would also be accessible and that’s where the player could read Zola’s Journal.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Shortcuts :keyboard:
This’d be the player’s ability to set hotkeys in order to quickly access a specific vendor while they’re in the Mourningstar.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Strategium :chess_pawn:
This’d be a way to access the Strategium outside of the cutscenes and track any available information surrounding the current situation on Atoma Prime.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Tavern
This’d be Darktide’s equivalent of Deep Rock Galactic’s Abyss Bar.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Trials :trophy:
This’d be a set of challenges conducted in the Psykhanium and they’d be available in both single-player and multiplayer.

Citations:

• The Mourningstar Vox :pager:
This’d be a Vox-caster for the player to listen to any and all promotional Vox Transmissions and Vox Intercepts.

Please let me know if I’ve missed anything so that I can add it to the Mourningstar Memorial. If you leave a like and/or a suggestion you will earn yourself a spot on the Wall of Martyrs!

How about a Tomboy Sororitas Appreciation TEMPLE? Y’know… with a Femboy Sororitas wing!

Love this!

In short, I want Fatshark to remake the Mourningstar.

It has an uninteresting appearance. One factor is the “mall” atmosphere of the place, but it simply does not appear appealing. It is dark, industrial, and dready, which I get from WH40K, but when you have a player hub and have designed emotes that I assume you want players to use, you have to:

    1. Make the area visible enough so that other players can see the emotes.
    1. Make it so that players want to interact with the hub and each other in the first place.

This may not be the best concept for what I had in mind, but here’s a screenshot of Owlcat’s Rogue Trader. While the Voidship is dark and broody, it is also filled with warm colors, browns, and reds, making it appear a little cozy:

Arm wrestling, as seen in Monster Hunter, could be a fun activity while hanging out in the Mourningstar.

Drinking competition from Monster Hunter:

Some type of bar and the ability to sit in chairs. I understand that I am posting a lot of Monster Hunter images, but I am just trying to show what I would like to see done with the Mourningstar:

I understand that we are on a Voidship and it is Warhammer 40k, so it must be dark, edgey, and broody, but I want it to have a purpose as a player hub other than being a dark and boring walking shopping mall where nothing happens.

We are all familiar with Deep Rock Galactic, a player hub that is perfectly designed by not being too large, using warm, bright colors, and including both a bar where you can drink and dance and a shoot-put game.

Everything you need can be easily accessed here without using a Player Hub Hotkey mod:

I also understand that not everyone is as into RP as I am, and when I say RP, I do not mean interacting with each other via chat, but rather being given the tools to immerse myself in my character and escape reality for a few minutes/hours.

The current design of the Mourningstar feels exactly like a “game”; it does not draw you into the world, with menus scattered around as “shops,” and it completely lacks the appeal of, say, Necromunda: Hired Gun’s Martyr’s End hub.

Unfortunately, I could not find a good picture of it, and I am too lazy to reinstall the game, but Martyr’s End includes a shooting range, a bounty board (missions), Gladiatorum (Psykanium), shops (Brunt), and named characters such as Kal Jericho and Artificier (Hadron).

Obviously, some of those things are already in Darktide or add no value, but if I could have found a better picture of Martyr’s End, you would see that things are actually happening there, rather than being dead and boring like the Mourningstar.

The best pictures I could find of Martyr’s End on youtube; NPC’s standing and walking around, a bar etc makingthe place feel lived in:

The quality of the last image is terrible due to the player’s use of Motion Blur, but it can not be too difficult to simply place some cool NPCs that walk around on the Mourningstar (bounty hunters, rogue traders, whatever) doing things, right?

It breathes a lot of life into the world:

Pub brawl (A Quiet Drink) from Vermintide:

I’ll upload that clip of what Darktide football might look like since the original video was hosted on Discord.

I’m all for any changes that will make Mourning Star a place to spend at least some time.
I’ve just (yesterday and today morning) was caught by surprise with one of the more awesome moments.

Our Grumpy Rogue Trader is trying to inspire Rejects (not working) and then Zola joins in (all in white) with “Who do you fight for?!” and everybody on the Mourning Star responds “FOR THE EMPEROR” – Awesome!
More of that. Bit of R&R is necessary when every mission could be our last.

Also Melk needs some dire rework in terms of rerolling missions. I’ve just spent 1 million (1 000 000) ordo dockets to reroll missions on ONE operative. I KARKING HATE MELK!

Edit: And I’m still not happy! I’ve left with "Melk you karking lady of negotiable affection for low amount of currency! Enough! I don’t have time for 8 missions on Vet, I need to get to leveling up my Ogryn! Wait… he’s not for low amount of currency, it’s costly extravagant for unsatisfactory value!

WHO THE FETH WANTS TO DO 8 MISSIONS FOR KARKING 310 DOCKETS?!
IF I REROLL IT I DON’T WANT TO SEE IT 7 MORE TIMES!
(I know it’s not that related to the topic, but Melk is technically on Mourning Star, so I’ve decided to vent - every Monday morning it’s the same karking story).

You’ve been added to the Wall of Martyrs and this segment of your suggestion’s been added to the “Tavern” area of the Mourningstar Memorial.

This segment is part of a broader issue, but I MIGHT add a new area in the Mourningstar Memorial to cover it… I only hesitate because this could more so be Crafting Memorial territory.

@brosgw we probably need to discuss what constitutes “Crafting Memorial” territory and what constitutes “Mourningstar Memorial” territory. I may be a copycat but I’m not a usurper.

Making the mourning star more then a glorified shop interface? Awesome ideas!

Yes please

Exactly! The Mourningstar shouldn’t be a place that everyone wants to avoid because it’s literally an in-game SOCIAL HUB. I merely aim to help make the Mourningstar the best that she can be!

Nice, great idea thank you!
