Well, what’s the alternative? An event bar with no end time that simply advances as the community contributes? They could add a reward for a genuinely difficult to achieve goal, but adding a failure state would not only make a game of it, it’d foster a feeling of player agency.

i liked the one where you fight between destroy and keep rations. it wasn’t THAT deep but it was fun having it actually affect gameplay too depending on choice in team. a bit of fun friction

but yeah my point is specifically that there is no failure state to begin with. it’s imaginary, they just tune it so the community can for sure do it. a failure state in this case would mean “not enough people played the game” so it’ll never happen

They should make one where the reward is either eagle-bucks or the release of a new map.

Also the whole “hey everyone complained about pressing E on the ground skulls, what if we did that again”

They use a similar bar filling system in Elite Dangerous and they fail from time to time.

i’ve been told that there is a guy in charge of the helldiver 2 bars and he makes them fail or win as it suits the narrative, literally hard preventing them from filling up fully if he doesn’t want them to

in that case it’s less of a dark pattern and more of a thing for enforcing a narrative which at least is justifiable. just adding these live tickers for no real reason though, i don’t expect them to ever fail, it’s a psychology thing

If the ticker can fail, then it’s a direct downgrade (A NERF?!?!?!!???) to the individual progression – win 10 matches of the event mode type of thing.

OTOH it could be an upgrade (A BUFF??!!!???!?!?!?) to people who don’t finish the final tier of the event but get to reap the rewards anyway.

If there’s one thing I do like about the ticker, is that my head canon is the same audience who grinds salvage is now being put to work making me Acquilas (this is a joke) :rofl:

I think that qualifies more under ‘Antagonistic DM’ problems.

I know I’ve given FS flack in the past for not having a Galactic War kinda system but seeing where Helldivers 2 has gone with them being pretty hostile to their own players doing stuff (see: stratagem bounce and hellpod steering) it’s probably for the best.

Fatshark at least isn’t openly antagonistic on the level of basic game mechanics being broken solely because player used them to gain a normal, expected advantage (before you ask, no, balance changes to rein in OP nonsense aren’t the same thing).

Arrowhead also seemingly lacks the understanding of how to implement meaningful difficulty, so they instead just opt to make a chunk of our arsenal effectively useless on higher Difficulties because many of the Enemies there don’t have proper weak spots, even though the existence of those would allow for more interesting dynamics within Helldivers 2’s gameplay.

They apparently don’t want their Players to be Anti-Tank meta slaves, but then they create Enemies like Vox Engines that have no non-Anti-Tank lethal weak spots. Well, beyond a little vent on the back of them that’s basically impossible to reach and then clips back on itself 90% of the time, and this is compounded by there always being more than one of them whilst they’re constantly barraging you with their mortars…

Darktide, for all of its current balancing flaws, does skill expression a lot better when it comes to using non-meta Builds. Both can be fixed, but Fatshark’s arguably doing the better job of it.

Arrowhead so aggressively doesn’t play their own game that a diver challenged them to do so as a charity stunt just to prove how they were butchering the game’s difficulty sandbox. Then the fanboys doxxed the dude and got him fired from his job and volunteer role, while arrowhead did/said nothing to condemn the actions. That’s why all this talk about toxicity here falls on my deaf ears because these people don’t even know what toxic is. “Incompetent” is toxic, fluck off.

And turn the game into ps2 graphics and Christmas lights and outright updatable for alot of people for what was supposed to be optimisation update.

At least fatshark does testing rather than having the testing be a public release that is hilariously bad

id prefer if darktide looked like a ps2 game cause then maybe it’d actually run well on normal hardware?

I uhhh was ripping on the recent helldivers 2 ‘optimisation’ public test patch that either did absolutely nothing for some and completely make the game unplayable Christmas mode for others because who needs qa when you can release completely broken updates to everyone they’re your testers.

fatshark yea doesn’t do things like that but ngl FS often releasing weird unbalanced things which is prob the annoying part of fatshark or dead on arrival modes + being slow with qol updates etc
