Please Stop Adding Content to a Dead Game Mode

When Expeditions was first announced, I expected it to be a CW-like mode added to Darktide, but it ended up being a major disappointment.

I played Expeditions twice on day one, and immediately found it boring, and I already predicted it would become a dead mode. As expected, within less than a month, almost no one was playing it anymore.

Now there is an upcoming update adding a new map to Expeditions, but I can’t help wondering whether Fatshark understands that this game mode has already been rejected by most players.

If the answer is that “we can only know whether a new game mode works after trying it,” then I understand that point, so I’m not criticizing the creation of new game modes itself (assuming, of course, they are not released in a broken state with terrible balance, bugs, or lack of QoL).

However, updating content that currently has almost no active player base just doesn’t make sense to me and feels like a waste of development resources.

99% of players are asking for new maps, but they mean for the standard missions, not Expeditions.

If they are not going to properly revive the Expeditions mode, then they would need to fundamentally improve its gameplay, which would take a lot of time.

The new class and enemies look very interesting and exciting, but I don’t agree with the rest of the update.

There are far more important things that should be prioritized first, such as major balance changes, improvements to Auric and Havoc, and fixes for bugs and overall stability.

It’s quite likely that the things that are gonna be added alongside the Skitarii were already in the work before the mode’s launch.

Which they seem to be planning on doing ?

I dont like new game modes or classes. I just want new maps n more kinds of enemies. Running the same maps with same enemies over n over again is boring. Nobodys playing expeditions rn except for penance enthusiasts.

Yeah I just want new normal full sized missions and a new biome and then some new weapons and enemies.

Like, it’s not rocket science. How are FS this belligerent is beyond me.

We are now starved of missions. It’s actually infuriating. I’m going back to miniature painting again. So bored of all the same maps I’ve played a billion times.

People say that maps don’t give longevity but that’s nonsense. It’s just when we are drip fed a single map then it gets played to death instantly because it’s the only new one we’ve had in 40,000 years.

What we need is a new entire map pack (3 maps) in a new biome and even a couple more in existing biomes (glorianna needs more).

If we get a heavy drop like that then it will give lots of freshness for a very long time, especially as they’ll be mixed into the abysmal map lottery selection we have as the main board.

If they #freethemodifiers into the mix at the same time then we will basically have a brand new game with countless new options to play.

WHY WONT THEY DO THIS FFS?!?!?!

A new class is a much bigger undertaking than some missions but hey they need to pump that nickel and diming on us I guess.

Anything but new maps it seems. I’m really quite angry at this stage.

Expeditions was a mistake. It feels like someone decided to chase Helldivers with no understanding of why Helldivers is liked while also quarter-assing the work to make a ‘Chaos Wastes’ that was inferior to VT2s.

I still find a decent amount of people on malice rushing it for penances. The question will be what happens when that’s done. When doing Auric I just treat expeditions as one weird map. Because the tech remnants really don’t matter.

Add on more weapons that can do any of the difficulties.

Seeing the new class get a rifle is it going to end up like the plasma cannon, capable of keeping up with the spam hordes, or like the revolver that used to be fun until crusher hp doubled and spawns tripped why the ammo count stayed the same…

If that rifle can’t one shot a crusher in the head in havoc 40, the dlc isn’t worth it to me, no hard hitting weapons in the game, it’s just bullet sponge crushers or bullet sponges by volume of spawns

It’s honestly kinda bizarre how every single Darktide system when first set up seems to just…catastrophically fail to give people an incentive to actually play. You’d think this would be the basic thing in game design, at least for a live service where the goal is to get people hooked.

‘We’ve invented a new currency for our gamemode! What should it do?’

‘LITERALLY NOTHING.’

‘GENIUS!’

I guess better than making it mandatory. Imagine if tech remnants were the resource needed to make red weapons or something?

Maybe use it as the conversion process. Trade Tech remnants for your choice of plasteel or diamantine or ordos or something.

They can’t make this gamemode good if they don’t update it and make changes to it. They won’t scrap the updates planned for it, since there were already datamines for 2 more types of zones (manufactorum & some sort of “red” zone).

I mean this would be entirely fine if done right. Darktide doesn’t need currency systems to be engaging, the current global currency systems actually make it less engaging by virtue of being an uninteresting roadblock to playing the game with what equipment you want. Darktide’s amazing core gameplay loop is more than enough to make people want to play it. The actual problem is that expeditions replaces darktide’s core gameplay loop of adventure mode with one that is simply far less engaging, and would require an engaging currency system in order to have a sustained playerbase, which is something a tide game has never had.

The materials not having any use is the crux to the problem FS keep trying to resolve and keep failing.

They need a constant, organic and tangible reason for materials, which would encourage rEtEnTiOn and longevity.

A suggestion for this would be, for example, a recolour shop, where you get to further modify your cosmetics or premium aquilla purchases, or further adorn them with sigils or wax seals etc.

Any time you wanted to recolour or add (or remove) a seal you’d have to spend materials. Premium colours would cost more etc.

This would give reason to go collecting.

They also could get rid of all the different pointless materials and combine them into 1 single currency (called ‘materials’?!) that would be used for all applications onboard the Morningstar.

We currently have plasteel, diamantine, melk bucks, credits…and now remnants?!

Why do we need all of them?? So overdesigned and unnecessary and barely any use to any long-term player.

FS seem to love to have a penchant for foot shooting!

I didnt like expeditions, but i wouldnt mind if they tried to improve them if there was enough recources to do this and other stuff. But there doesnt seem to by far , so yeah, i would also much prefer if FS focused on main mode and Havoc.

they also won’t do the necessary fundamental changes to it that would make it actually good though, we saw this with mortis trials

in my opinion they should scrap those plans, and repurpose the planned zones as regular missions instead of throwing them into a dead gamemode they won’t fix because nobody plays it anyway

I just don’t understand why they keep trying to divide an already small player base? What’s the point?

They are making all the same mistakes they did with VT2. It’s mind-boggling how they refuse to learn from their mistakes.

I agree… except about one thing

ADD THE PROMISED SOLO GAME MODE

When I played Expeditions, it just made me sad. It felt like Fatshark had lost confidence in their original (and IMO best) game mode and was instead chasing trends that Darktide wasn’t really built for. Like they didn’t feel like they had the ability to bring new life to the normal game mode and make it better.

I hope they take a lesson from this, stop making new game modes that most players don’t really want, and instead focus on adding new and better maps with new content to the original game mode. That mode is where Darktide can really shine, not by trying to be something it’s not.

I have no interest in Expeditions and never have.

Same here

This is a copy of Helldivers 2… a really bad copy.
And for extraction shooter, I prefer Arc Raiders.

the one guy and 3 bots playing expeditions are gonna be eating good this update

although knowing fatshark they’ll probably just recolor the skybox and call it a new map

Yeah as much as I love the art/environments, I’m now only playing for the penances…which I wish I’d done sooner because it’s getting harder as less people play it.

Everyone will be playing mainboard now for the skulls and aquillas so it’s an actual…wasteland now. Excuse the pun..
