What's coming up in Darktide

It mean that the person is wrong, but it’s not completely wrong though.

It wasn’t promised but they had initially spoken of a different system than the VT2 classes (Which is basically what we have with the tree), but before launch they had already talked about the Archetypes>Classes

Gotcha. Any idea where that info was shared?

I think it was only mentioned in an interview iirc

I do not recall if it was the first mention, but, as one might expect, it was mentioned in the Class Spotlights that came out before launch. Zealot: Preacher Spotlight.

I recall the terms were also clarified by a CM in one of those early FAQs but I can’t recall which one or where.

I’m on the hunt for references to the talent trees from before launch, as the original poster I was responding to said the trees were promised for launch and I have absolutely no memory of that.

Thanks for pulling that preacher link tho!

I can’t find it but I did find something else that was interesting

Q: Your previous games had five character classes. Can you confirm if Darktide will receive a fifth class as well?

We elected to go in a different direction in Darktide (compared to Vermintide) and provide the player with 4 different archetypes or classes to choose from and customize to their own liking instead of going down the route of predefined characters as in Vermintide. Through progression you will further be able to customize your class to play as you want within the limits of what is available to that chosen archetype. One of the benefits of our new system is that it opens up for us to add more archetypes down the line as the game service goes on, something that was difficult in Vermintide. But when the game releases there will be a Veteran, Ogryn, Zealot and

Do note that while this link does mention Live service and weekly update, it’s the interviewer and not FS Magnuson

Ah, my apologies. I thought you were talking about the Archetype/Class terms that seem to have caused some confusion.

In that case, I think Cactus has the right of it. In the first big magazine article (PCgamer), they mentioned some sort of system that was more free-form than VT2. I think they referred to careers in VT2 being a “crutch” to achieve an idea they had for classes and roles but wanted to do something more elegant and less rigid for DT. Sadly, all my links I had saved to YT read-throughs and such are dead now. I found this wordblog that gives a brief summary but eh . . . better can probably be found. There was also the Edge article, but I don’t know if that one mentioned the theoretical “free-form” system or not.

The next closest thing was this post for the beta tests. You can see he says they will be quite different from the career systems and I recall being distinctly puzzled, because, like a lot of commenters in that thread, I felt it was the exact same as the career system.

There was a lot of speculation on how things exactly went down. We were told this just days before the CBT, then the CBT launched with what could best be described as these sort of patchwork talent UI for very generalized classes. There was no artwork for the talent page at all, just the buttons. By the POB, the page got the stained-glass window background and the talents themselves got overhauled a bit. It all seemed to smell like a bit of a rush job, so the thought was that, as the crunch came and they weren’t managing to balance whatever tree system they had at the time, they reverted to the safe familiarity of the career system to get the game off the ground. They had two plans going forward: continue to develop career system OR attempt to get the original plan to a working state. Fortunately, they chose the second and brought it back to life. At least, that’s the theory.

Thanks, y’all!

I’m still looking, and very much enjoying this pre-launch interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LAlf1C4Mags

Oh I remember the last time you guys said nonsense like this.

And look at out that turned out. I’ll believe it when I see it.

You know, I was already past this “DT was never advertised as Live Service” topic we recently had around here - I maintain, it doesn’t matter what the interpretations were, what we got spoke for itself.
But that topic did have a strong “temper your expectations, this is what they stated we’re getting” undertone and @Mayson’s topic from earlier was meant to illustrate that point further.

Within the context of “what’s coming up in DT” - allow me to fully display how GaaS Light works:

Q: Let’s talk about your plans to continue expanding the storyline through a live service approach. What can we expect from every weekly update?

"There will be bigger and smaller beats depending on the timeframe but something that we are really excited about is the ability to weave narrative into smaller updates such as a weekend event where we will tie even something as trivial as a double xp weekend into a narrative context and with approach relay a sense of a living ongoing world where things happen in the hive that you as a player should react to. There will also be bigger narrative beats such as new missions and new areas of the Hive that we release on a regular basis.

We have built a lot of systems that will allow us to do both big and small updates that should all add to a sense of an ongoing narrative. But the details of those are a bit too early to go into."

Check these terms out - “There will be bigger and smaller beats depending on the timeframe”; “we are really excited about is the ability to weave narrative into smaller updates such as a weekend event”; “double xp weekend into a narrative context”; “relay a sense of a living ongoing world where things happen in the hive that you as a player should react to.”

If you read the above and you don’t walk away with the idea of a vibrant, dynamic system of content and frequent, weekly updates, you must be from the future. Well, it didn’t end up anything like that. It still doesn’t feel like it.

Now, for the GaaS Light:
Technically, there were bigger and smaller beats. We got Dogs modifier for a few weeks there, a community event, Twins and… well, narratively, that’s kinda it. BUUUUT, they were small and larger, and they were updates. So, technically, we got it… And this system that allows FS to implement these patches IS there. They never said they’d use it A LOT, right? They said they’d use it regularly. Every three to four months IS regularly, just not a lot…

Q: Regarding the loot system. Is it the same as Vermintide? Will we be spending time to re-roll our stats again?
"Darktide features a similar but re-designed loot system from Vermintide you will still be getting new weapons in the way of loot drops however we have changed the delivery mechanisms a bit from Vermintide.

The biggest difference from Vermintide is the addition of some shop mechanics which will allow players that due randomness will be able to purchase a weapon they really want for credits that they acquire by completing missions. In this way players that are unlucky and do not get that weapon they most desire from the loot system can simply save up some credits and purchase it from the weapon store.

There is also a crafting system that will allow players to finetune the stats and traits attached to their weapons to be able to create the weapon of their dreams. The crafting system will allow players to move a trait from one weapon to another and in that way even further customize the weapon they want."

“Will we be spending time re-rolling stats again?” - yes. Yes, we will. Wasn’t denied, just went on into the cool stuff - the Shop. Brunts. Where we can purchase a weapon we want in case the RNG wasn’t in our favor. Umm… Yeah. He didn’t say it’ll be a weapon we’d like, or one that’s of superior stat distribution. True. The fact that we didn’t know about those at the time is fine. It wasn’t a lie. It wasn’t promised.

But this one always gets me: “There is also a crafting system that will allow players to finetune the stats and traits attached to their weapons to be able to create the weapon of their dreams.”

Stats and traits? STATS?
Well, he must’ve been confused himself, or had a lapse. Or just made a mistake. The guy who specifically differentiated between Careers, Archetypes and Classes made a simple mistake in judgement. It happens. He didn’t mean it, really. And let’s be really, finetuning and crafting isn’t a focus in DT, it’s only us the players that dwell on it. Right @Ol_Jakal ? Silly us.

Q: Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is also coming to gamepass Day 1. How has your experience with Microsoft’s service? Is it worth it to forfeit some retail sales for the service?

This article was posted on the 27th of June. The one-search information, stating that the game won’t, in fact, come with crossplay Day 1 is only available in this article, from November 28th. The game launched 2 days later (this was located more accurately to an article from the 18th in the post below, making that 12 days).
I’m sure it was stated on the Discords, I remember some CM dropping the news, or I might be imagining that part as well. But we’re doing articles here, not Discord.

And so, in relation to the above, and the topic of this thread: DT players beware. Temper your expectations. Avoid excitement. As the examples above show, statements can be 1. Easily misinterpreted, 2. Evasive, misleading and confusing, and 3. Retracted and amended up to 12 days (as more accurately placed by the following post) before release/launch.

I’m sure this won’t change your feelings, but the lack of crossplay was noted at least as early as 11/18, during the pre-order beta: Community Update #1: Pre-Order Beta Hotfix 1.0.6

Thank. You. Badwin! I had a feeling someone would dig up the appropriate source. And I had a feeling it’d be you or Mays. Let me correct that - 12* days before launch, instead of 2. Communicated in a Beta Comms and one Article in the webs. Noted.

With that correction -

Anything else regarding the OP? Any other contributions?

Nope! We continue to have vastly different interpretations of basically all instances of FS communicating, as well as FS’s end products.

Fundamentally, I view FS as a group of humans who are passionate about the games they make, have lofty goals, often fail in very human ways (like prioritizing nose-to-the-grindstone work when really communication would serve them better), and believe they’re legitimately trying to build great products. I also think they’ve succeeded in many ways and continue to improve the very best gameplay I’ve every enjoyed.

And you have your beliefs!

Yeah, didn’t think so.

On another note, with personal views and beliefs much aside in favor of observable facts and statements, and in the interest of adding to the overall topic here:

How do you interpret the above examples I posted (literally scrolled through an article someone else posted for some other reason)? Does previous communication and the company’s history factor into your positive attitude? Where do you derive so much faith from?

Based on what I saw from DT alone, I lost mine and not quickly either. But I learned.

Do people not watch reviews before they purchase things? I got exactly what I wanted from Darktide when I (pre-ordered) bought it, and I’m glad it came out when it did. I knew the deal, the FS speed. The systems around the combat being janky and unfinished didn’t kill my enjoyment of the gameplay, and I’ve loved the stupid amount of hours I’ve put into it.

That an interview for a site I’ve never heard of included a quote from the developers saying “finetune the stats” didn’t factor into my purchase. And it existing doesn’t mean they’re liars to me – because I can see that changing perks and blessings affects what someone unfamiliar with the game could easily understand as “stats” – but you can grind whatever axe you want literally til the day you die and it won’t make you any happier. But…uh…maybe it’ll make the game better somehow?

Normally yes but it doesn’t help if you pre-order something unfinished and what they promise isn’t implemented.

My heart goes out to those who were promised solo play.
