While not as popular as Helldivers, DRG to me is still the gold standard of how to do monetisation (I’m aware the model may not translate 100% to every game).
DLC available from the store directly, and one even being marketed as a ‘supporter pack’ than primarily content. Transparency FTW.
darktide does have a “Supporter pack”, you can upgrade to the imperial edition. i think the cash shop is more something tencent pushed for, which explains how it’s seemingly run by whatever chinese studio they have cranking stuff out
i would buy them if the majority of them werent ugly as sin. like how tf do you mess up krieg sets and scion gear for veteran? theyre all so far removed from what tthe original designs are that im almost positive the devs are doing it because its funny to them.
I get your frustration with microtransactions—many gamers feel the same way. They can detract from the gaming experience and seem more about profit than player enjoyment. However, some players do find value in them, and they help fund ongoing game development. Constructive feedback and supporting fair pricing models can push the industry towards more player-friendly practices. We all want a better balance in gaming.
Vermintide 2 already had a cash shop for cosmetics that was just as outrageously expensive. The only difference is that it was real money instead of monopoly currency.
As a note i think what really bugged me about the funny money layer was the initial justification that it could be given out as twitch drops or events which if i remember correctly wasn’t fulfilled as well as the underhanded move to rotate shop items out, re-release them more expensive and taking items out of the packs while jacking the price up.
For the first one i think most people would just rather see the real money values instead of having to navigate a funny money layer which hides what the actual value of what you are buying. A lot of people went “ok sounds reasonable” for the justification of it being used as a reward and given out semi-regularly only for it to never be fulfilled baring the X-Box disaster.
Upping the price of the pack while removing value is a scummy move no matter how you cut it. Just reinforces FOMO and absolutely designed to milk people with fear of missing out and the additional fear of having to pay more for something they might want if they miss out the first time.
I think a lot of people would generally be ok with the cash shop as they are in other games if it wasn’t just fumbled so hard. Since the inception of the cash shop it seems like every little thing that could make people mad was stumbled into without my forethought.
I do. I like the game. It’s fun. It is also my money and i will spend it however i see fit. The people who simultaneously play this game nonstop but also constantly talk about how bad the game is/Fatshark are make no sense to me. If i didnt like the game, or the developer, i just wouldnt play it. Same with the cosmetics, if i dont like them, i dont buy them. If i do, then i will buy them. It’s really that simple. Do i think my opinion matters more? Of course, i am buying cosmetics, you arent. Fatshark should listen to me and only me, since i am the one making the shark fatter and fatter/s
While I absolutely get your sentiment - the view of most critical forum users is actually a lot more nuanced then “game bad”. For most DT is great during missions. Combat is absolutely awesome and the atmosphere is thick and nails that 40k vibe to the point. In fact the missions are so awesome that they keep players in the loop despite a lot of other shortcommings such as but not limited to:
the mourning star which is unfortunatly nothing more then a gloriefied shop interface although it could be more
slot machine gambling called crafting
Overpriced MTX that try to utilize every mean mobile game scam to get people money (instead of offering fair trade which would be fine in my book)
no free mission selection
no SP although advertized at release
glacier slow updating not only of real content but also in fixing bugs
next to no communitcation by FS
So it’s actually not as contradicting as it may seem at first to enjoy the core aspect of DT and at the same time be critical of the whole periphery.
Nonsense - it’s due to the fact that they decided to make it server hosted only. The setting has nothing to do with it. Otherwise it couldn’t have been a thing in VT2 either.
While death threats are never OK it doesn’t change the fact that criticizing the lack of communication is valid.
I get that. But this isn’t VT. Let’s hope they make private lobbies customizable. I enjoy the randomization of missions. That way, people don’t play the same damn thing over and over again. (I hated that about VT.)
I kinda agree with you and I also kinda don’t on that one. It’s a mixed bag. They could be doing more one-way communication at the minimum. But from what I remember, the playerbase when communication was in this game was absolutely rabid.
Did some digging around and someone else said that Hedge reported this around December 1st 2022. I checked the discord of that time frame, and a lot of people were talking about him receiving them (plural) in his inbox
It’s also just as convenient to say that someone had the worst luck in a system that can’t actually prove that you’ve had THE WORST luck. I mean, let’s be real, the amount of players that complain about having THE WORST LUCK just doesn’t fit the math. Which, of course, is measured by a subjective definition of what “THE WORST LUCK” is.
I agree with all of your points. The game is not perfect. What i said was targetted towards certain individuals who do not care about the nuance and cannot have a civil debate. I have seen people say they hope Fatshark goes bankrupt and everyone there loses their jobs, that’s just insane to me. It is only a game at the end of the day. Every time there is an announcement, there are always naysayers who are never pleased. For instance, there are those who claim the game is “broken.” That is absolutely not true. At least in my opinion, “broken” means the game literally does not work. As in, it crashes every single time you open it. At launch, it was more or less “broken.” Having minor bugs does not make the game broken, but i digress. Ive been a lurker on here for a while and i have seen it on here as well as on other platforms. By the way, those types of people exist in all of gaming. It is not exclusive to Darktide alone. As a final point, i think if the game launched in the state it is now, with the exception of the slot machine crafting, it would have been much, much more well received. It launched way too early.
My utterly baseless tin foil hat teory is the slop shop pricing adjusted for the current playerbase at the getgo… so when the game “launched” and peaked at 100k players, FatShark have gained enough revenue to keep this operation afloat for a while…
I consider anyone buying cosmetics a fool. The skins in this game are hideous. Most of them look like the fabric was ripped off of a porn couch from the 1970’s. The ones that don’t have that nappy paisley pattern have weak color pallettes and otherwise look ridiculous… heres looking at you, Psyker Micky Mouse hat.
