Oh yeah I was around during release, not here but over at Steam & Reddit. I remember it well. And believe me I don’t want to.
I remember reporting at least a few death threats, and considering they promptly got banned I wasn’t alone either. For the first few months there were countless people violently abusing and attacking the devs, the game, and anyone who didn’t agree with them or were still playing. They would derail and infest every thread they could in such numbers no matter how many got banned or you blocked there was just no end to it. Every day they made new threads tracking the decreasing reviews and player counts, madly gloating and celebrating over every misfortune. Many of them were spreading blatant lies about the state of the game or the community, and there was a constant massive pressure for review bombing.
I even got my first stalker who followed my posts into every thread to attack, abuse & discredit me despite being blocked and ignored. Thankfully the mods addressed that one in the end.
In those first 1-2 months since release I must’ve blocked a hundred people all in all, far more than in all the years before it combined. It was an honestly disturbing experience. Yes ofc. frustration, disappointment, even anger (up to a point) is understandable, but what I saw then was just unhinged. Seriously mentally disturbed people who needed help, badly.
Idk what Fatshark’s communication practices have to do with all that, if anything, but the “fans” behaviour back then went far beyond what any game dev or community rep should ever have to tolerate.
The people who caused this are the people pushed FatShark to release a game that was in no way a fit state to be released.
And when people spend money on a product they expect it to work and do what is advertised.
Same as Cyberpunk 2077, was released way to early, was in no fit state to be released, and didn’t even have half the things they said where going to be in it.
And all that happens is that people get angry and p*ssed that they have been mugged off again. And the people that caused problem in the first place, investors, don’t care as they are in the med on a several million dollar yacht drink cocktails and snorting your money. Whilst the developers who put their heart in the game take all the flack.
The fans behaviour is a reflection of the poor state of the gaming industry, where incomplete games are released for premium prices and then subsequently never finished, but all their MTX work and all the toxic manipulation tactics designed to force player to part with their money work perfectly.
And it’s almost every game now that is released, the industry is helping to create the kind of monsters that you talk about.
they could have done the psyker hat a little better but its probably one of the only 40k-ish psyker hats the rest are just masks and the collar. its supposed to be a navigator house hat, but obviously it can’t be as cartoonishly large in game because we hate fun. that’s a rogue trader on the left btw, instead we got pirate knockoffs
