I’m interested in buying darktide as I enjoyed vermintide 2, but lack updates and clear direction for what the devs are planning is very confusing to me. They seem to have backpeddled on everything from including classes, maps, and the whole live service thing. All of my friends say the core mechanics are good but everything else is bad. No updates in a over month for a game is very disconcerting to me, all me friends say wait 1 a year for it to be playable.
Is their a way we can demo the game? I want to play it, but I dont want to pay for vaporware all my friends are saying it’s not worth spending $27 right now.
Didn’t know it was on sale, honestly 27 is solid price for its current state. Played since beta, to this date, so can say for sure there are MANY missed opportunities so far. However, the core game loop is super fun, especially with friends. We all play almost daily still. But we also complain daily lol if you ever played COD’s Nazi Zombies, this is just another universe of that kinda. Still fun, I say get it then wait for the (hopefully) updates to come
Your demo is the Gamepass version. Now that there is crossplay the only downside is you wouldn’t be able to transfer your save over to the Steam version.
If youre on optic fiber, quickly download it, play the tutorial, then decide if you want to refund.
It’s only recently where they’ve finally ironed out most of the bugs and issues, while adding 2 new maps, an new enemy boss that’s actually scary, and unvaulted skins. Is the game at an amazing state right now? It’s not stellar, but it isnt bad either. If they keep this pace up then no buyers remorse, and if they don’t then at least youre able to play with your buddies who are griding right now as it really isnt as bad of a game as it was.
Bottom line is that if you like Vermintide 2, then you already like the gameplay, and I’m sure the futuristic aesthetic is interesting. All of have to do is understand that Darktide is only 8 months old. The fixes, improvements and additions made within that span are commendable, while the patience of the community is the complete opposite.
Imo, there arent much bugs left in the game that I know off, and for a new player, there are much things to explore and get used to. $30 is worth it as I paid almost $100 for premium pre-order.
The real question is, Do you have $30 to ultimately blow, and do you game casually or are you a nerd.
Buy DT because you know you’ll get into it, not because others are playing it or you got $30 dollars to burn and this is one of the “best” options to burn it on.
the reviews for the game are very bad, why would I pay nearly $30 for a game that the majority of players think is bad? I don’t want to pay a lot of money for game thats not worth that price. I’m downloading on gp right now for $5.
Been here since beta and I barely play at all anymore. Do not recommend if you’re on the fence even a little bit. imo either try it if you have gamepass or keep waiting at least until the xbox version is out. FS fumbled the bag hard on this game and it’s still pretty up in the air whether or not they’ll ever get back on track with their original plans that people were actually excited about. Feels like we’ve been treading water for the last few months and it’ll probably stay that way until the dev team isn’t split working on the console release.
The steam reviews, steam discussion and this forum speaks very loudly about the state of the game. Glad you came along to forum before impulse buying!!
If you want to try it out I suggest do it via game pass, at least you can play other games during one month sign up and cancel after a month if you want. It is NOT worth an outright purchase.
There has been no “real” updates for 8 months. Weapons here and there, nothing special but they only added 2 new maps which are reused graphical assets so you still feel it is the same missions. So in my opinion, no real updates.
I am very glad someone read the forum first. We want people to be informed.
The core mechanics ARE good. Really good, even and none of the really jarring problems affect the experience much until after you hit level cap. Unless you’re in it for the story, I guess, in which case you’ll be disappointed.
I’m going to give you a different answer than some. I think buying it is reasonable even in its current state, especially with the game being on sale. But go into it eyes open, don’t expect too much or you’ll be dissapointed. You will almost certainly get 40~ hours of fun out of it if not more. I have played 800 hours.
That said: the state of the game is definitely less than what was promised or hoped and it is saddled with some of the most frustrating crafting and mission select problems in any game I have ever played ever. It will likely be another 1-2 months before there’s any important updates, and who can say the direction the game is going in. There’s only 4 classes, though each feels unique to play and very fun, the maps lack a lot of visual variety but are also extremely good representations of 40k terrain and look cool. There are some server issues and hitreg problems and performance issues come and go. HOWEVER. It is a really fun game to play. Like really really fun. So if you’re cool with getting to the point where the systems miff you off and the game has run out of fresh content to keep you interested and then just put it down for a while, go ahead and buy it if you want. Dollar per hour its a great deal. It just has a huge array of very serious problems a lot of us bitter hangers are very butthurt about. Hope that makes sense.
Give it a go on game pass first. Don’t bother with the crafting as even though it is cross play in terms of gamepass + steam players match making pool your progress cannot be carried over to steam version. So don’t do crafting when those items can’t be carried over to steam. Just play those 5 missions and those 4 classes.
Honesty if the game was priced half, it might be worth it to get alot of hours out of it and not set expectations on anything new for months or year even.
It is worth it on game pass as at least you get value from other games of the subscription.
Do not buy this game in it’s current state unless it’s 90% off. The advertising has been completely false and the game is perfect if you want significant blood pressure problems.
IF you enjoy playing gacha gambling casino style mechanics with a real sh!tty FOMO cash shop, I suggest you go and get a free mobile game with these kind of hateful mechanics and avoid Darktide.
And based upon current speed of development I’d say waiting a year is optimistic. In 2 years servers will be closed at this rate.
In case you hadn’t figured it out I’m very salty about my money that FS have scammed out of me with their false advertising.
I played about 8 hours last night and what you have all said is very much my experience. Also had to 2 games were half way through the mission I get a server error that boots me to character selection screen. That makes me really salty not gonna lie and totally ruins my experience.
Core mechanics are good, rest is a mess. Servers are very bad and hit reg is incredibly bad and noticeably impacts gameplay experiance. Live service games are meant to have server resets weekly to avoid memory leaks for stuff like that. Makes the devs feel like a bunch of amateurs who don’t know how to make a live service game. Got called the N word and tranny by someone and got kicked from the team for calling out toxic behavior. Just lots of parts of the game that feel very unfished and unpolished.
I’m just going to go back to playing GTFO and left for dead, my general experience of this game is that it needs like another year in the oven especially at the pace these developers are working on it. Fairly toxic community from my limited experience, I had to turn off comms volume in game because people keep swearing and saying offensive things on voip.
4/10, I will unironically come back in year. The core mechanics are great, but man so much is wrong with this game that just drags that good parts down…
The complaints you see here are from seasoned players who’ve reached 50-100 hrs or more (some >1000 !) and realised the end game, which is min-maxing, has been sabotaged by fat shark.
But the game play itself is great, and until you reach level 30 with every character, you’re not going to get annoyed by the crafting system etc. That’s 50-100 hours right there, stress free.
*edit
also:
They use AWS instances that are spun up and down for each game. What you’ve said there about server resets isn’t really relevant. Hit reg is pretty good, apart from the odd sniper blip. Well, I think so at least based on 20+ years of online shooters YMMV
