Should I get this game?

I just got vermintide a couple weeks ago but I don’t really enjoy it. It seems just like a nonskill spamfest where you pick grail knight and left click your way through hordes of enemies. I resorted to playing engineer and kerillian and all the FPS oriented “finesse” classes to make it more challenging, but it doesn’t seem like aiming ability is rewarded in that game. Just smoke a bunch of weed and spam left click and get 500 kills. I pretty much cleared highest difficulty with only bots within the first week.

I’m looking for something that is more challenging than just a melee smash fest. I’m not even some pro at FPS games but I would like shooting and ranged combat to actually feel rewarding unlike vermintide and I don’t care about other aspects like cosmetics grinding. I’m trying to justify 40 bucks after just buying vermintide when a lot of people told me verminitide is a better game already. But my guess is darktide probably is better and vermintide just attracts melee spamming stoners or something. At least thats my impression. Any input would be appreciated, I just don’t want to be relegated to a secondary position for using ranged combat while the other 3 players are up front smoking a blunt in 1 hand while smashing their mouse and taking out 500 enemies a second. If ranged combat is actually good in this game I’ll think about getting it… but if it’s more effective to just tie a monkey to a mouse on a melee class I’ll probably not enjoy that again.

It’s better combat but the immersion needs some work. Future space zombies in an overcrowded megacity in the year 40,000+ sounds cool as hell but I really just feel like I’m killing zombies for no reason. It’s like L4D with way better combat but killing for no reason.

You have to find a build you enjoy and just go with it. It will feel clunky until you get the right build, but with how bad the rng is, you may never get there. It’s worth the try especially if you vermintide as easy jump right in, but the maps feel too similar and it gets repetitive fast.

I wouldn’t worry about that. Range is king in DT.

If you enjoy the VT formula, but wish it was more ranged-oriented, you’ll probably enjoy DT. It’s not the most refined or complex ranged combat you’ll ever see, but it fits the game.

It really isn’t though. You have to melee through with the odd occasions to ease engagements with range.

You can just play zealot and transition right in after mastering the cheese slide and never shoot a bullet even for snipers.

Or I can just run a bolter and not have to master anything.

Except the long reload time that can down you in a pinch and low ammo leaving team dry. It’s not a horde clearer and only boss killer for those that can’t melee their way out of a wet paper bag.

I never said melee isn’t ever needed, so I don’t know why you’re arguing that point.

All I said was that ranged is king, and it really is. The only practical reason not to use it for 90% of the time is because you find melee more fun.

id say probably not , doesnt sound like your thing at all.

DT is great. The core game loop is very enjoyable (even with the lack of additional content). There are definitely some strange bugs here and there, and the weapon system as a whole is a little too punishing, but overall I’m very happy. A few of my close friends and I have been grinding it for about a month now and each time its engaging, smooth, and overall exciting (a dreadful kind of exciting because things get WILD, especially in HI Damnation).

Something worth noting: a friend who I play with has played VT and he LOVES DT, but has repeatedly mentioned how there are things that DT lacks that VT already has. So sometimes you may question why something doesn’t exist in DT when it does exist in VT. Whether its features, or just overall gameplay experience.

Regardless, its a very fun game but I understand why there’s a lot of negativity. Some things will occasionally not work, some core features are either not implemented properly or don’t work at all, and the lack of diversity in classes/level sets can make it feel like you’re playing the same levels over and over.

tl;dr: yes, just promise you won’t use ALL your damn plasteel in your early levels. That stuff is more valuable than gold right now. Plasteel NFTs anyone?

Would you guys say its closer to vermintide or deep rock galactic ( no melee weapons)? Or at least more challenging than vermintide?

My main issue with vermintide is that melee skillcap is abysmally low compared to shooting. Everyone just chases green circles by slaying the vermin rats and being the team sniper/boss dps is pretty useless since anyone can just run a secondary gun to one shot the specials without even needing to headshot.

I’m not saying I’d hate anything with melee, I just don’t want melee to be so broken and easy that shooting becomes nearly pointless. My favorite class is engineer which is the most ranged oriented and probably worst class in the game. I bought the game just because I liked the idea of engineer and it ended up being horrible. I just don’t want that to happen again thinking I’m buying an FPS game and it’s just a bunch of idiots running into my line of fire to top the most kills and then crying about friendly fire. Or leaving me in a trail of dust to get assasinated because I tried to snipe the specials so they can full tardmode with their swords.

I understand you can’t shoot things 100% of time and you will need melee when you get overwhelmed. I just want ranged classes to be viable and not a handicap for your team.

Should you buy this game?

No.

When they double the amount of missions and levels maybe.

There are tons of different weapons available but most of them are crap everyone uses the ones that are not crap so you see a lot of people using the same weapons. Recently they nerfed a bunch of those weapons. In future maybe all weapons will be crap.

You need a decent pc to run this game properly and even then its riddled with performance issues. They are fixing it slowly but a lot of people still have problems. Its a cooker and it’ll run your pc hot.

Games full of bugs still sometimes you see some funny sht again they are fixing it slowly and have been since release.

Crafting system is terrible.

Social aspects of the game do not work properly. You cant report people for making racial slurs in chat even and there are no consequences for bm or crazy behaviour in game. Only reason you don’t see too much of it is that the community is mostly adults. The people who run the game do nothing to prevent it. Even if you do block someone before the game ends you will still meet them in public games lol.

Servers lag quite badly sometimes and hit reg is really bad all the time.

Pass and wait for another six months. If fat shark haven’t gone out of business maybe they will have got dark tide to where it should’ve been on release lol. There more to say much more but you get the point. You can have fun with this game despite everything but if I had my money in my wallet still and know what I know now I would buy something else.

Ahh I have an acer nitro it has a decent graphics card but only 8 gigs of ram. Its probably not going to not run well if that’s the case. I guess that’s it then.

You can make it work but you have to edit a config file extensively. The tools to turn things off that are broken are not actually in the menus in game.

All in all it was a botched release they are trying to fix it… but its still F’d lol

It’s definitely more challenging than vermintide thanks to the better mix of melee/ranged enemies, at least until you start talking modded difficulties.

Friendly fire isn’t a thing here, though teammates can block your shots.

They’re not at all a handicap and you’ll have plenty of things to kill.

This makes it sound way worse than it actually is. Some people do have a lot of performance issue, for sure, but it’ll run decently well on ~5 year old hardware on low/medium settings unless you’re one of those cursed souls with whatever specific configurations cause the horrible stability and frame issues that some people report.

It is that bad mr cheese. Even though I toughed it out and managed to get it to work navigated the horrible mess and had the stubbornness to beat the horrible grind to get good gear can I recommend it in good conscience? No…

I didn’t have to do anything and it runs fine. Like I said, you must be one of those unlucky people with the cursed config. Unfortunately, OP won’t know whether he’s like you or like me until/unless they get the game.

This I’ll agree with. OP, if the gear grind is something you dislike, you probably want to come back in a year or so when they finally accept that the gear system in this game is garbo and replace it.

I can. The base gameplay is really good, even if tons of the stuff bolted onto it does need tons of work. The game is pretty fun while you’re leveling. It’s only after that when it really grinds to a halt and all the issues become too glaring to ignore.

People say that all the time. Hit reg is horrible dogs fly around all over the place audio ques for specialists don’t go off etc etc that’s all game play. Blessings don’t work properly sniper rifles have no scopes there is a list as long as your arm for even the best aspect of the game.

Saying I have a cursed config and you where fine  srsly? I’m willing to bet more people had trouble and strife with this game than didn’t. Will you take that bet? I’m 100% sure NOBODY just installed this game and played it without a hiccup and lots of people refunded straight up because the game just didn’t work at all.

I get that you want to be positive but cmon at least be honest this game was released in a state and even after months of work its still not right.

This right here is one of the biggest reasons not to buy it. They are too slow to fix glaring obvious stuff they have the entire community literally screaming at them for months about and still think they are right then grudging slowly they accept they are wrong and incrementally fix it lol.

Remember that mr cheese next time your rolling a modifier at hadron’s house of horror and pain. The next time you spend a million credits at brunt’s armoury and get two good weapons that hadron bricks for you immediately. The next time you dodge somthing only to have it magically stick itself to your head. The next time you get shot by a sniper through a bridge, box, wall, floor with no audio que or visual cue just pew

I could go on but ill stop there. @op don’t listen to Mr cheese he’s a nice guy and he wants to be positive I like him. But he’s wrong games f’d wait until they fix it. They might not ever fix it…

nope

I did not also. Why don’t you try to get a refund for VT2?

Can’t really compare. I played VT2 20 hours, and Darktide more than 1000.
DT has ranged combat and also melee. By example, yesterday I did a mission as a zealot. It was a difficult one for me. I tried to go melee, but there was a lot of shooters. I ended on floor 2 times. Let’s not talk about game mechanisms, but if I would have been one more time wounded, I would have died.
Then I had to start to use my shotgun intensively. This mission was a shooter fiesta.

I don’t know what you consider like that.
I would say that you have several choices for this:

  • buy on steam and test less than 2 hours… you’re happy, fine you continue playing. You’re not, ask for a refund
  • try it with Gamepass PC (but do not stay on this platform as we’re all on steam)

Considering you seem to not like melee, I advice you to not take a zealot. Veteran is a class focused on ranged weapons. Psyker is fun, as it is focused on psychic abilities.
Ogryn is mixed, melee and ranged. It depends of your choices.

Aiming well is needed in darktide.

People say it because it’s true. The core gameplay is really good, even counting the issues. It’s like the #1 most frequently stated description of DT: “Gameplay is great, everything around it sucks”.

OP doesn’t care about the launch state (which I agree, was horrendous). It’s generally very stable now. There’s only a few select places where I ever crash or get FPS hits. I have audio cues noticeably fail to play maybe one in 10 runs and I could count the number of times I’ve had hitreg issues on one hand. You can pick out the game design features need work and I’d probably agree with you on all of them, but as far as performance and stability goes, it’s far, FAR better than it was at launch.

The whole gear system in this game is an appalling waste of player time, which is why I almost always just use gear as it drops. That’s why I told OP to come back later if gear grinding isn’t for them. The gear system doesn’t even really come into play until you’re max level anyway.

Like, I get and agree with the statement that there’s a lot to hate about DT, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t things to like.
