KNOWN ISSUE: Performance Issues/Audio Stuttering After Path of Redemption Update

Hello, I recently upgraded from a 3060ti to a 7800xt and although my FPS displays more than 100, the game’s a stuttering mess. I switched to the experimental branch and also tried steps 2 & 3 but nothing changed. Note that after launching the game, the newly added commands were gone from the settings file.

This game is poorly optimized for AMD. The only solution is to switch to an NVIDIA graphics card. I’m using a 6750XT, and I’ve been struggling with this for a year. That’s just how the game is.

Issue Type (Required):

Audio

Issue Description (Required):

During missions the audio will at random start crackling and breaking for around 1-2 minutes at a time, my performance barely drops during these moments and i usually run the game at max settings with a steady FPS. I have an RTX 4060ti and I7-9700k.
I get these moments of audio breaking at least once every mission but usually it is between 2-5 times a mission for around 1-2 minutes a time as i said before.
I have had these issues for a couple months now but they have gotten increasingly more common over the last few weeks.
The audio gets to the point i have to stop playing the game after a match because of how straining it is on my ears.

I have recorded clips of me playing the game on Auric missions where they tend to happen more often, likely because of higher enemy density. Because of the 30MB limit i have shortened the clips to around ~10s to fit within that limit.
keep in mind that in these clips you will only hear my audio when it is breaking. Outside those moments my audio is normal.

In game, escorting FPS drop all sounds and music vanish for few seconds. Not every FPS drop escorts by sound miss.
Considering that this happens randomly It is hard to record this, but I’ve got this on attached file (sorry for screaming man).
As I said that comes randomly, so sometimes I can pass missions without this bug, but chance of it grows in long game session. For example chance of sound vanish at first in-game hour low and it comes really rare, but already on second hour it comes almost every time.
Nothing else on other games. Setting lower graphics settings doesnt help (if it really connected with frame drop).

Same issue, tried all the fixes, nothing worked, I thought that since path of redemption they mightve fixed this issue, but it seems its still here, before path of redemption I never had this issue playing the game.

Issue Description (Required):

So ive started this new topic to see if anyone can solve the issue with sound stalling that started happening since the Path of Redemption update, this issue may or may not be related to many other issues but its different enough from the others since it doesnt produce a crash, its just the sound stalling and the framerate dipping when that happens. for some time now ive been posting my issues mainly on another thread and from that I was able to get some insight to what is apparently happening, I contacted developer Axloss, the dev who is following that thread, and he was able to identify from my console log that the issue is sound stalling and recommended a fix that he said it probably wouldnt work but it was worth a try. in fact it didnt work, but he was also able to see that it was not a “PSOs” related issue which while I dont understand what that means someone else here might. Developer Axloss said that there isnt currently a solution or repro yet for this problem thus I’m currently creating this thread in hopes of harboring potential updates on the search of a solution. Ive tried all developer fixes in the “Sound will cut out at random , which leads to a freeze, and crash. Never happened before newest penance update” and “KNOWN ISSUE: Performance Issues/Audio Stuttering After Path of Redemption Update” threads fyi, I’ll now post my console log and recorded in-game phenomenon below(they are not from the same match):

I also play this game on an SSD although my app data is on a HDD

I will aim to provide an update on this next week, with @Axloss’s help.

I can clarify that I’m looking into if this has anything todo with direct storage or if it’s due to other reasons. Since direct storage was set as our default file reader with path of redemption.

General performance is not my area really in this. I’m focusing on the stalls that causes audio stutter and potentially “deadlocks” (more likely very very long stalls).

direct_storage = {
    enabled = true
    disable_bypass_io = true
    force_file_buffering = true
    force_mapping_layer = false
}

This has been my recommended way to see if the issues is due to direct storage is to test this first and if you still have issues you can try set enabled=false, do note that all of our in-house tests is with direct storage, so false is not tested at all anymore. These settings should work in your config file in appdata.

What I know so far is that certain user has issues with their game on one SSD but not on another so what I want to know are. (on both disks would be great, if you manage to get it working on another one)

  1. What OS are you using? Win11, Win10 (including version number)
  2. What filesystem is used on the disk were your game is installed? Hopefully you have NTFS.
  3. What bustype is used for your disk? SATA 3, SATA 6, NVMe/m2.

Perhaps we can see a pattern for users with issues. I’m currently implementing so we can see the above info when initializing direct storage, but currently we dont see file system or bus type.

Our own in-house tests are mostly on Win10 so could be that this is a Win11 isssue which is why we have not been able to reproduce it.

%appdata% location shouldn’t matter that much, perhaps a bit slower reads of you cached shaders, but that’s very small difference i would say.

  1. Windows 11 version 23H2 when I went to get it through Get-ComputerInfo in Powershell it gave win 10 but that might just be the one that came with the pc
  2. NTFS yes
  3. bustype is RAID this might be the problem perhaps since its not the ones you mentioned and Ive never seen it b4

Conclusion: its either a Win11 issue or my Bustype is not suitable

But its really odd, because from what I know, the only thing you guys added on Path of Redemption related to this is direct storage so in theory disabling it would fix all problems right? even so I did disable it and the stalls kept happening could it possibly something else then?

Also if there is a more detailed patch note for path of redemption update I would like to see it myself, I’m no computer wizard and might not understand anything in there but I think redistributing amounts of effort might be worth a try

Hello,

I’d like to report that I used to have this issue (frequent audio stuttering, then shortly after, game crash), and that I’ve been able to fix it permanently.

TLDR: The problem was caused by a hardware problem on my gaming SSD drive (many bad sectors, many other sectors which were still readable, but barely - about 20% of the sectors of the drive were performing badly). I replaced the drive with a new (and better) one, and the problem is completely gone.

I don’t know if this fix will apply to everyone who has the problem, but it may at least help the people for whom the issue is caused by a drive problem.

To give you a bit of context, I am a software engineer, so I know quite a bit about computers and programming. When I started to have the problem, I re-installed the game, and I started using the beta build. I also re-installed my graphics card drivers from scratch, and patched my motherboard bios (actually, I followed all the instructions figuring in this page: https://support.fatshark.se/hc/en-us/articles/7709661288733--PC-How-to-Resolve-Crashes-in-Darktide). Unfortunately, this didn’t solve the problem.

Then, I started ‘playing’ with the game’s technical settings (activated direct_storage; then deactivated it; then ‘played’ with half the settings in the file, including the direct_storage settings). Deactivating direct_storage helped a tiny little bit (instead of crashing all the time, the game was crashing about ~85% of the time). But this didn’t really solve the problem.

I checked the game’s crash logs, and didn’t find anything obvious in there either.

I had noticed that my gaming drive had started behaving funny a couple of weeks before (file copies were sometimes strangely slow - for example, instead of getting around 500MB/s or more, I would sometimes get about 1-2MB/s for a few seconds, then it would go up to ~200MB/s, then it would go down again, and so on. Sometimes, files copy would stop, dropping to 0 B/s).

In the DOS command window, I ran a ‘chkdsk /r’ command on the drive. The command quickly got ‘stuck’. I kept it running for about 10 hours, but it was not making any progress. That’s when I understood that there was definitely something wrong with the drive.

I’ve replaced the drive, and I’m now playing with the official Darktide build (not the beta one). The problem is completely gone.

So I think that people having this audio stuttering / game crash problem should definitely check the health of the drive on which Darktide is installed. That may not be the root cause of the issue for everyone, but I it’s definitely the root cause of the issue for some people.

For your information, my previous drive was a Kingston NV2 NVME 2TB drive (I didn’t know when I bought it, but this model is known to fail quite quickly - I had bought it 2 years ago, and only used it as my gaming drive, from time to time). My new drive is a Kingston FURY Renegade NVME 2TB drive, which is a way more durable model. I won’t be buying cheap SSD drives anymore by the way; I’ve learnt my lesson :expressionless:

Dear Fatshark team, and fellow gamers, I hope this helps.

Through faith and dedication, we shall appease the machine-spirit of the game.

@Axloss : I think that simulating disk drive access failures might be a way to reproduce the issue on your side.

Cheers

My game performance probably improved after POR update and was already great before that with little to no performance issues.

However…after those 2 patches/hot fixes (the ones that messed up the AMD settings and full screen windowed option) my performance has been very stuttery. It’s the first time I’ve ever experienced it and it’s particularly bad on the train level, even with lowest gfx settings. It’s impossible to complete the minigames without hitting the sides because it freezes about 5-6 times per minigame then it’s already hit the wall by the time the screen has caught up.

Whatever you guys did in those settings-messing hotfixes…please undo.

It’s put me off playing for quite a while now. It’s just not fun with these issues.

Issue Description (Required):

Game runs smoothly, little to no visual stutters, but what really ruins the gameplay for me is the really common audio stuttering which I can best describe as the audio and music (of any kind) repeatedly cutting out in the same way let’s say you’d press the pause and continue button on youtube. This just really ruins the vibe for me.

Steps to Reproduce (Required):

I have no idea how to reproduce this other than you’d have to somehow play on my computer.

I get pretty bad audio stuttering and cutting out when I play the game. It tends to get better the longer I play, but is really bad in the beginning. I have a Ryzen 1600 6 core and a GTX 1660 Super.

Steps to Reproduce (Required):

  1. Start game
  2. First couple I have bad stuttering
  3. Tends to get better but still happens

same issue as mine lol

I also get this. Its usually ok by the end of the first game for me.

could be due to other things such as a re-write of sync vs async operations. Or otherstuff like gameplay code triggering more audio events than before.

We will likely create a new experimental branch next week with some improvements since we could force stalls in the audio system if file open was slow.

create to know that you are running RAID, I will ask our IT to setup a test for that!
