Yes, playing on console is a choice and yes, playing a FPS game on console is a disadvantage compared to PC in many cases. But in Darktide the difference is just enormous. Much due to the fact that hordes are spawning all around you all the time and you simply can’t turn that fast on console, but also because you’re limited to the number of buttons you have for your combat ability, dodge/slide etc …
The play style on PC vs console simply is too different and much too limited on the latter.
If you release a game that is cross platform you need to take that in to consideration. It feels like the game today is scaled for PC players and having a console player in your strike team is just annoying …
I’m not sure what could be done but I’m leaning towards that it would’ve been better not having it cross platform and to scale the gameplay accordingly.
The game has been adjusted for XBOX players, I’m pretty sure. It definitely went through some director changes around-abouts patch 13 when the XBOX version was released. That might be more hardware related though.
But … XBOX players can also buy a keyboard and mouse can they not? I’m a PC player, and I bought a joypad for some games (RocketLeague specifically).
Only when we get the same. No clunky console interface crap in crossplatform games with awful controls that clearly were put in as an afterthought after gamepads.
I carried 2 PC players and 1 console player last night. They were all really trash tbh. They kept dying and at one point I had to solo an entire event. It was not fun
They desperately need some kind of gate for damnation or matchmaking ranking or something.
Damnation is easy on controller. People just suck really really really bad and shouldn’t be playing damnation +.
I use a controller with paddles and my fingers never leave the buttons. I think more controller players just need more practice and get controllers that allow them to play a game that requires more buttons, like controllers with paddles
Overall, I’d say most people I play with on damnation do fine though. I probably get one console player on average per game? I’m on UsA servers.
Giving it some more thought: I remember playing a FPS game once (can’t remember which) on console that had a button for 180 degree turn. That would help console players. Also to be able to configure axis sensitivity, customize all buttons and a 3rd person view (looks amazing on PC) to get a better feel of your surroundings
You already can customize sensitivity! They added that in patch 13 I believe.
I also remember the 180 degree button o some games! It’s honestly not needed if you just play around with the settings already there. I use rotational speed of 1.8ish for everything and turn acceleration on.
The acceleration kinda works like the 180 degree button. When you put the joystick all the way to the left or right it goes 10x faster.
Not to say there isn’t work to do for FatShark. Their aim assist leaves a lot to be desired compared to other games still. And there still isn’t rumble. Like come on I haven’t played an fps in 20 years without rumble. It’s half the allure to controllers!!!
I’m not going into Aurics anytime soon, but personally I don’t see that much of a difference between console and PC players. I’m wondering where they’re coming from for y’all because much like the Mythical Speed runner Zealot I never see the egregious nonsense of what gets described on the forums.
Yea my experience is the same. There’s definitely just some players who don’t have the skill level or care enough to do damnation.
I started a game last night and had to get up right away because my kid was crying so I died instantly. I got to watch the 3 players when I came back and omg 2 of them were just so bad lol. Both were PC players too. They ended up leaving after dying a couple more times and we got good players to come in. Went from a really hard match to the typical damnation cakewalk with competent players
The reason was the hardware inside the box, not the pad. They reduced horde size because the PS4 etc couldnt handle PC sized hordes and increased the health to compensate, from what Iv been told anyway.
Console vs. PC isn’t the right question - its KBM vs. Controller. You do have PC players sometimes playing with a controller, and of course most console players are using a controller. Console players could use a KBM with their xbox, though very few seem to.
With that caveat in mind, DT is going to be punishing for the “average” controller user. By “average” I mean a more casual player that isn’t invested in getting/using a better controller to support FPS play. Gyroscopic controllers for aiming can be pretty fantastic, but again that’s a level of effort most controller users won’t bother with. And you absolutory need more controller buttons than a standard controller provides.
Darktide is a worst case scenario for controllers as well. It’s a combination of needing to quickly to do major twists and turns (180s, etc.), AND have precise aiming. Controllers struggle to do both of those well. Certain builds (melee focused, flame weapons, shotguns, etc.) will naturally work a bit better if on a controller.
I’m an auric damnation player (KBM) and in generally a pretty poor controller user in FPS games. I did legitimately spend about 5 hours in DT using a controller on PC just to see how it was, and I struggled below Heresy difficulty - I can’t imagine how a controller could keep up with Heresy let alone Damnation+ without being at an obvious disadvantage.
However, at the end of the day, I feel like the system is somewhat self-selective.
What I mean is that I haven’t seen too many people on damnation+ that are obviously using a controller (I have seen maybe 5-6 in last 50 hours of playtime). I have to imagine that if you’re a typical controller-user you probably tapped out a lower level of difficulty already. And if someone has made the investment in a better FPS controller setup, then they are probably holding their own in damnation just fine and I’m none-the-wiser that they are on a controller.
Balance and hardware and skill… I honestly think it’s a difficult thing. Then you have accessibility too. I think, as others have said, keeping rewards the same at lower difficulties will prevent people from playing the harder ones to farm, this seems like the easiest solution.
Like in PvP games I suppose you could do things where if you “perform badly” enough you drop in leagues, and go up if you do well enough to match make you with people in your skill bracket. How you capture metrics for that, I don’t know.
Either way, I think the issue is there are differences in hardware used. Most console players use gamepads, most PC players use mice. But it’s not exclusively the case, and there are other hardware options that can make performance better or worse. I think, therefore, we should shift the conversation from what platform you use and either create brackets based on specific hardware you use (are you using gamepad control scheme, or mouse and keyboard?) or just based on skill, which it’s ultimately about. And I think making resources the same across difficulties would probably help a lot with this. Otherwise, you have to segregate people based on skill somehow.
That’s a fair take. I would hope the rest of us controller players in damnation have the courtesy to have the skill level to do it.
Most people I play with are on PC I’d say and I honestly don’t notice much of a difference in “carrying their weight” when it comes to pc or console players on damnation and especially for auric. Like I said in my previous posts, I sometimes just get really bad players who mostly suck at melee. Like they seem to be fine when I’m watching them with ranged. They are straight trash at melee I noticed.
Totally agree although I dont think u need a better controller but more like dedicated time until you “become one” with the controller AND get really good at a game and for DT that means knowing all the important stuff, how to teamplay, positioning, what the real threats are etc.
It absolutely is. The average controller user simply cannot compete with the average kb+m user. Headshots, time to target etc all just easier.
An anecdote:
I used to play Modern Warfare 2 MP with friends on 360 and I usually ranked around halfway on leaderboards while my friends always came top quarter consistently. At this time I played a fair amount of kb+m 1st person games on PC but not MW2.
Fast forward some time and I got a free copy of MW2 from overclockers for PC cos they messed up my RAM order. I jumped in to some MP matches using kb+m. I consistently came top 3. The difference was startling.
I play most games on PC or console with controller now because old man hands. I wish I could play with kb+m on DT, but I cant.
Controller is here to stay, console or not. Most bad players I play with PC or console, have lack of knowledge or awareness and no amount of mechanical skill can save them, only wisdom.
hi, this is a skill issue problem, i only have play darktide with roller and its completely fine, never use m&k because don’t know how and don´t want to learn too.
im on 1300 hours on steam, only play damnation and have done any “difficult” thing you might think of, like defeating hard mode twins.
if your problem is dodge at the same time that you change direction, change the buttons actions on settings, or buy a controller with extra pads.
