Everyone remember those bunkers in Dawn of War? You could move a unit into one and it would be fairly safe, could shoot out. Interlocking lanes of fire.
Veterans only. Everyone is in fully guard uniform. No melee. Just shooting down wave after wave of cultists, orks, poxwalkers, chaos guard. Whatever. Coop Competitive. Most kills gets an extra reward.
Kind of like defending the castle or the square in Vermintide 1… except with defensive positions.
If popular ad vehicle targets and artiliary spotting. Possible mounted guns.
No where to go except to set up better shots from the other end of the bunker, no melee, just you, your buddies, (maybe more then four people to a match) and a ton of ammo and cover. Shoot until you get tired and vote to leave.
Maybe have a main bunker and some forward bastions. Teleport there (well, rail line behind the scenes. You go in a door and come out way over there.) Allows shooting from many angles.
If popular, add ‘call for artiliary’ and enemy vehicle targets.
I like the idea and i would like to add to it:
Ever played a game called Dome Keeper? its sort of a rogue like where you are supposed to protect a dome and mine when not being attacked, what if this mode worked similarly meaning the bunker gets to be improved based on the currency player gather.
Imagine after 5 waves you risk going outside to pick valuables that some of the enemies dropped and throw it inside the bunker before the next wave starts thus generating currency that gets used to repair and buy ammo or health, meaning if you play well enough you get to spend the surplus on upgrades such as sentry, artillary strikes, op weaponry, harder armor, land mines, explosive barrels, npcs outside (disposable convicts lmao) chemical weapons, illumination (this is important too) all sorts of life improvements.
It would be nice if theres a power creep to it but difficulty increases over time meaning even if you are very op after a while enemy forces catches on.
It’s a good idea. Main thing I don’t like about rogue lite game is you can’t use your best stuff. Like in Chaos wastes in vt2, your red collection, that you worked so hard for, stays at the door.
I want to bring my good stuff, and earn more good stuff. Always felt like Chaos wastes, while good, took that away from me.
I get it but i disagree, i prefer to have stuff from zero just because of the prospect of acquiring weapons that are too broken for the main game.
It would be nice though if you could (in vt2 also) take some of the extreme op weapons for a campaign mission even if they break after one mission.
I think there has to be a place for all classes and there has to be opportunity for confident players to remain outside the bunker when the door closes (to use melee get it) whatever this mode could be it would have to accompany the base game content.
Seriously though, I’d say balance it with maybe some kind of all melee colosseum brawl. An all ranged, infinite ammo "Who can get the most pops’ bunker defense seems like a fun mode, and we’ll all be playing every class so it’s not like everyone won’t have a vet sharpshooter to bring.
Sort of, imagine this as a Imperial Guard class only RP. No Zealots allowed. Ogryn can come, but have to wear guard uniforms.
Now, Darktide is NOT intended as an Imperial Guard version of Space Marine or Call of Duty / Call of the God Emperor. It’s intended to be a w40k suicide squad with lots of backgrounds, and that’s awesome. We will all have a good time.
But while we are at it…
We’ve got all the assets in place to make the game above… Imperial Guard: Call of the God Emporer. We could have a sort of speical game mode where we get to play out a mission as Imperial Guardsmen. A game inside the bigger game. No hate vs other classes, and indeed, it might be neat to do a set of sub games for each class, though I don’t have any particular inspiration for the Ogyrn Olympics or the Psyker power parade or the zealot preach-off.
Still, the Imperial Guard has a lot of fans. “The planet broke before the Guard did.” “Cadia stands!” etc. This would be a really nice thing for that segment of the players. All lasgun all the time.
If we do have melee, it needs to be with bayonets.
I’m in favor of the idea, all except “Veterans only.”
Seriously, why would you limit people to only one class for the wave defense mode? I get it, Veterans are the most popular class, “THE PLANET BROKE BEFORE THE GUARD DID,” happy gas mask noises, whatever. But this is a game about customizing and playing your own character. You say we will all have sharpshooters to play as, but on what are you basing that assumption? I, for one, have no interest in playing the class. I’m mostly going to be sticking with Psyker.
It feels weirdly circle-jerky to make a game mode in a class-based co-op shooter and then limit it to one class. Like a “no girls allowed” clubhouse, y’know? It’s a much more interesting experience with a variety of classes, anyway.
As a first person shooter. Everything needed is already there! All that needs to happen to have ‘a day in the life of a Guardsman on the front’ is in the game now.
The most important part of an artistic creation is setting up the limitations. Limitations chafe at first, but then they provide direction. It becomes something specific.
Limitation: You are in the imperial guard. Your job is to defend this bunker. You have been issued a standard issue Lasgun and a standard issue uniform.
(I can’t provide a screenshot from dawn of war from inside a bunker, so here’s another exterior.)
And the thing is, this would be easy for the development team to make with existing assets. Heck, it could be an educational flashback to what the evil guardsman in the game were doing before they became evil, except with loot.
I find it funny that you mention Dawn of War: Winter Assault as your example, because every class in Darktide is also in the Imperial Guard roster in Winter Assault.
You’ve already mentioned Psykers, but the IG in DoW also have Ogryn and Zealots (the dudes in the command squad with Eviscerators who can make their unit invincible).
No “flashback” lore required. Just say that it’s our characters defending an Inquisitorial depot / refugee camp / secret weapon / ammo stash against hordes of traitors. If you want the “full guardsman, day on the front” experience, just get together with friends or like-minded randos on the forums and make a premade, it’s not hard.
Well, the point was it would be fun to have an all imperial guard bunker defense… Everyone cutting down poxwalkers with volleys of las gun fire… but seems like we’ll have dark eldar in there with us before it’s done.
It would be fun for people who main Veteran. Even if twice as many people play Veteran as any other class, that’s still about 60% of your playerbase who won’t be able to bring their main to this game mode, all for the sake of “immersion” that you can easily achieve by setting up a premade.
Meh. You don’t seem like you like the idea of a sub-game mode for Imperial Guard fans.
Okay, we’ll agree to disagree.
Meanwhile I’m hoping the Devs will see the appeal of a sub-game mode “A day in the life of the Imperial Guard - Bunker Marksmanship.” And all with stuff they already made.
I like the idea of a wave-defense game mode in a bunker. I dislike the idea of limiting it to one class out of four when that’s something you can already do yourself by just finding a group to play with.
I genuinely do not understand why you feel like this class restriction is necessary for the game mode, considering the Imperial Guard includes every class currently in the game. If you can roleplay a disgraced former Guardsman as an active-duty service member, surely you can roleplay the same for all the other classes, right?
