Poll: Do you like the crafting system?

In a game that’s supposed to be about skill, it should be about your choices and load out. Not what you happen to get and roll. DRG, hell divers, remnant from the ashes, etc.

Why though?

Because it’s on the fatshark forums with their preselected userbase? Because it’s by someone who is quite opinionated on the topic? Because there are 3 dislike options, and only one like option? The wording is not neutral - “I dislike certain parts of it but I like it overall” is not the equivalent of “I like most of the crafting system”. And so on.

Heck, I had almost skipped it as jet another #breakthelocks troll-meme circlejerk. And even so there was no point in voting.

Ah okay.

Pretty much anything can be perceived as bias.
Order of options.
Layout of options.
Language.
Order of operator words within options.

Maybe the most objective way to run a poll would be to rate the subject on a 1-5, but that then has the issue that it’s too vague.

Heck, even having a neutral option (“I have no strong feelings about it one way or another”) can be seen as biased, since it can dilute the %s and allow one option or another to be downplayed.

The order is automated by the result.

The actual order would’ve been with the two options of liking the crafting the first two and the dislike ones below.

The userbase isn’t a form of bias. It’s random people who decided to make accounts on the forums and to vote. The link wasn’t shared to specific people nor hidden from others.

That’s a logical fallacy. It’s irrelevant as to who makes the claim and what their beliefs are. Doesn’t mean the content actually is biased. Logic and rhetoric 101.

They actually are equivalent.
A.) I dislike 60% of the system
B.) I like 40% of the system

A and B are the same (assuming there is no “neutral” feelings, which arguably, indifference to a system in a game designed to be fun should be seen as a failure in metrics if it doesn’t generate excitement or a feeling of purpose.)

Depends. Did you create a post to announce that you’ve uninstalled the game? Did you take it to reddit? If the answer to both questions would be “no”, than it’s your business that you uninstalled and told me so. If it is “yes” to either one or two questions, then I think that contrary to what you say (either about leaving or regarding your activity), you are not being constructive, just repeating the same thing over and over.

Well, can’t deny here, getting duplicate weapons will be a waste of time with no motivation to continue.

It’s a poll about the flagship of criticism about DT these days. You can’t make it neutral.

I linked you an example:

If I was a developer knowing X change resulted in X players uninstalling, leaving etc. and them providing what it would take to bring them back is pretty useful metrics. Especially seeing what kind of support those statements get. It’s as simple as that.

Motivations and mental states are irrelevant. Guess work, immaterial. Irrelevant. If I am a developer, this is a business, I want to sell copies, and to do that the game has to be fun. If I am losing customers and they are telling other customers about their negative experience me knowing WHY is useful.

Sure you can.

Same. I hate inventory management and selling/destroying heaps of useless stuff. I want to spend as little time in menus as possible and you know, more time actually playing the game.

I think @HenchAnt does have a point. The “3 dislike options” is pretty accurate and could have been worded better. I feel like @Kurt genuinely wanted to make an unbiased poll so pointing it out (that it could have been worded better) is a good thing, and educational. Although the method could have been a bit less confrontational.

I won’t hold my breath.

It’s 2 like an 2 dislike options. But one of the options might come across as “dislike” due to the wording, but if you’re capable of reading that shouldn’t confuse you.

Can’t change the poll now, but thanks for letting me know.
Doesn’t change the fact that the poll is anonym and might attract people to vote that don’t want to make a post about it… As it just creates trouble.

That was roughly what I guessed you might say and I think its a reasonable position. I’m not sure whether or not I agree but there is some value in this approach to progression. Its definitely more “infinite”. I think the problem myself isn’t so much the locks but the inability to reliably and deterministically craft something that you would want. Builds cannot be played with, they can only be hoped for.

I am not fully sure how best to solve that problem and I have spent some time thinking about it. I do think the best short term solution is to just remove the locks. Personally I have argued in favor of RNG for weapon stats remaining even though some players don’t like that. I am rather fond of the idea of some players having ultra rare master crafted weaponry that no one else has, and I’d love to see it be visually distinct and truely legendary. Something the whole playerbase could be butthurt over not having. I think this is sorely lacking in videogames today. But within the realm of normative weapon acquisition and gameplay its not fun to not have access to intentional build customization and its not fun to have bricked weapons. Its much better to have 5 hammers with slightly tweaked stats that benefit from some perks and blessings that act as sidegrades or experiments than it is to have 1 hammer that is good and 12 hammers that are bricks. Or something like 31 in the case of my inventory.

In VT2 people just ask for progress wipes and restart all over again. If people like grinding that hard they can always do that. DRG has the same system.

Say what you will about WOTC, but their surveys are quite good. Anything less than 80% satisfaction means there’s something wrong somewhere with a feature. Someone voting “neutral” is not exactly ideal, it means there is nothing engaging about the feature at all.

The poll is fairly neutral considering the subject matter, and considering you’d want useful actionable feedback from it.

This is poll meaningless if you want to probe what % of the player base thinks what. It’s for a group of self-selected people who visits the forum.

I say this as someone who actually thinks that making the hardcore 1% of the player base happy is actually a good idea.

Solutions that work aren’t dumb. But I will say that’s highly suboptimal from my point of view.

Lets list a few parameters of the problem since I can’t come up with any solutions maybe someone else is smarter than me.

Ideal crafting system

  1. Infinitely grindable
  2. Deterministic build customization
  3. Includes prestige/bragging rights opportunities
  4. Meaningful gameplay impacts
  5. Not annoying
  6. Getting what you want doesn’t take absurdly long

Also, just something that popped in my head while typing this up…the weapon colors have absolutely no relationship to rarity (like they should) and are entirely about their “level”.

my level 5 sword is better than my level 4 sword. The colors are meaningless.
