Darktide ain't fun for me anymore

I mean yeah I got a thousand hours so I probably got my money’s worth a couple dozen times over but ever since the cops got added to the game nothing has felt the same. The cops have horribly boring personalities, they’re lame to play as and with. Instead of a tech-acolyte with a wholly unique toolkit we get some street plebian that’s a better veteran.

Darktide’s an amazing game but I’m out of it, man. Adding the cops was the biggest mistake in DT history imo.

Usually when I feel that way I just start playing a new game. And most of the time, I end up missing darktide.

Personally, if we’re talking multiplayer games, I am going through Darktide, Helldivers 2, and jump space 2 primarily. Have done some satisfactory, phasmophobia, forewarned, rogue trader, and such for multiplayer. And then all the single player games I have on the go. Alan wake 2, Talos prinicple 2, the pale beyond, warhammer chaos gate, Vermintide 2, etc.

Sometimes I will take a few months away from tide games in general. Even video games, VR and non-vr. And I think that’s healthy. It’s just good to add diversity to things. Maybe I’ll focus more on my aerial silk rig and trampoline in the back yard, get that double star drop looking better. Maybe that board game I get. I have 70 ted talks in my youtube watch later meaning to get through. That book my dad lent me. E-foiling, kayaking, etc.

For the arbites specifically though, I dunno. I have some friends who really love the aesthetic and personality. He really gets into the character and puts on the voice when we’re in matches and shouts things like “stop resisting!”, “He’s reaching!”, and “he can’t keep getting away with this!”

But he really likes Judge Dredd. It’s subjective.

Again, PERSONALLY, but I try to have one build per class I use a lot and I try to make it as meta as I can while also keeping it unique in game play. I don’t use the same weapons on any class, if I can help it.

Currently that means:
Martyrdom zealot heavy eviscerator, pistol, stun grenades
Weapon specialist shout plasma veteran with kraks and knife
Ogyrnheimmer with paul and rumbler or melee pick axe and single heavy stubber.
Psyker flame staff and force sword (Yes gun psyker is good but every other class uses guns, I want the unique stuff).

And for arbites I primarily do shock maul and shot pistol and shield with dog. And that’s unique enough for me.

For the upcoming Hive Scum totally agree it’s pretty boring in themes and aesthetics, especially when compared to other 40K stuff. The toxic drug stuff could fit a batman like bane idea maybe.

But I will say the mechanics look interesting. I don’t know if it will be a better veteran if we’re talking plasma shout vet. But I am not even interested in that play style for that class. I want the “I move super fast with knives” build and throwing stun grenades all over the place. That sounds fun to me. Or the chemical war crime build. But it will be hard to say/see until we get the class in our hands and all the specific numbers of everything.

Who tf thought to put “The lex is the lex” in the game alongside the balance mess that is Arbitrator bruh it drove me insane.

Honestly I feel the same way about stupid admech characters. Its such a tourist trap for people who know nothing about the setting. There’s literally nothing special about sparks coming off of their weapons and wearing red robes while using worse psyker abilities.

Do you see how these garbage opinions based entirely on being negative are not worth posting at the outset? Or can you not just walk away from something you claim not to enjoy. I don’t get why we have to entertain so many posts about the ‘state’ of the game or how jaded you are. Like alright go ride a bike? I personally was not overly enthusiastic about hive scum, but came around to cautious optimism reading the blog. I don’t approach a single f’ing announcement about this game with ‘WOW FAT SHARK DO BETTER’ because that is just a recipe for mental illness and being unhappy. And this better veteran whining every other thread is a huge skill issue reveal.

Take a break for half a year. Play the singular new piece of content (a map at best) for a few weeks and go back to hibernation. Never buy MTX.

Tide combat is liquid gold trapped in a jar of incompetency that is Fatshark. This is the only way I’ve found it to be enjoyable despite Fatshark’s best efforts.

Take a pause…

Played a lot Dune the last months… now I restarted Elite Dangerous.
I am about to launch my travel to Colonia (the travel is a 22 000 years light)…
Making a break is the best to do when you’re here… I did it with Elite dangerous, and must say that I enjoy it better (that and the new Mandalay starship! - took a break of several years^^).

The game really badly needs new missions, or chaos wastes. New classes and weapons are fun and all, but it’s been a year since the last full mission and all we’re getting with the Hive Scum is an operation.

At some point, you get so used to the maps that you could do them blind and need something new to mix it up.

As others have said take a break and play something else for a while, I have taken breaks from Darktide many times but I always return sooner or later.

I switch it around sometimes. It is boring to choose same melee weapon and same 3 melee classes all the time.

I recently restarted my Zealot. Then as I progress I re-visit the skill node pathing as form of progression, very short lived as progression is only hours. Restricting myself to using only mission dropped weapons and avoid crafting as my own challenge.

It is similar to other online games like “seasonal” characters reset

  • Zealot - I sometimes go off meta - Heavy Sword and pistol. Or Rashad, my first main weapon before Auric existed. Then play more the evasion and re-engage game when I struggle.

  • Ogryn - Butcher 3 and Ripper 2 can opener, the old pre-Auric classic when there wasn’t carapace congo like now.

  • Vet - Melee build, Chainsword and plasma, but go frontline to carapace and do the dance with 3x stamina curios for speed and higher block amount, grab all yellow stims, ignore other stims and constant VoC for melee assault frontline and plasma as face range shotgun instead of long range.

Yea I get comments from players about gear choice when I do that - Who cares it’s just quickplay.

Switch it around

For some reason I don’t understand, Vermintide 2 gets new missions, but Darktide no.

I also stopped playing Darktide vecause of the Cop, I got back to see if it has changed…

Lets see…

The cop is a fun addition, but its hard to deny the power creep they introduced in the game as evidenced by how they reworked the talent trees. Anyways am also taking a break from this game cause once again for 64th time fatshark doesn’t know what to do with darktide.

Yeah, I took a month/two month breather from the game when they dropped Bound by Duty cause I couldn’t quite bring myself to start working through all of the builds that just got wiped and re-make them. Went out, smelled the roses, didn’t think about the game for basically any length of that time, then got to the end of the gameplay loops of the game I was playing and thought ‘you know what? let me actually at least check out what they did, especially since they went through all the re-balance passes and should be gone for a decent bit again-’

And I honestly got bored insanely quickly. All the classes got updated, but they went the way of the Arbite. ‘Pick every single good node you want + your favorite Combat Ability, make a mild choice at the end picking which keystone you want thus dictating the last bits of point usage’. There’s very little nuance/often 15-20 nodes might as well be auto picked for you if not more, and it’s made the whole experience rather linear for me. No longer am I trying to think what exact talent combination will make this specific weapon combination work, just what keystone makes them function the best and then that’s kinda it.

That combined with the power creep as my ‘normal hang out’ (auric) feeling kinda stale, sure there’s still the fun game here and there, but I’ve basically lost all the ‘drive’ to actually try and ‘min max’, cause it’s just so easy now I don’t need to think anymore. The moment to moment still has it’s…moments, but it’s very rare I find myself thinking ‘ohh, I could have made this build better by doing X instead!’ like I did before, or even just ‘maybe I should try doing this node instead of this’, because you just have it all now and there’s no real decision making to be had. My ‘greatest revelation’ since ‘coming back’ was realizing I can swap off the backstab talent on zealot for Disdain for like, a good chunk of my builds since it isn’t locked to ‘the crit side’ anymore, and it’s only needed for when you actually need the backstab keyword. So that made Zealot interesting for me for a little bit, but now I come to find they are making ‘better zealot’ as the next DLC class coming December 4th and I’m like Ohh good…welp…guess I’ll just…not care about that then…yey…

Veteran felt awful/I just felt like tissue paper so basically stopped building them after their ‘meta builds’ (since Arbite just replaced them for anything but ‘equip plasma gun and Duelling Sword’), Psyker gets to just do everything now but Assail (my favorite flavor thing on them) is like throwing tooth picks at most enemies now and turned off my interest quite heavily (there’s only so much fun you can have being immortal nuking everything with fire before you want something more out of life, and we’ve been nuking things with fire well before this update too…), Ogryn didn’t change and Arbite is still boring AF, and we went over Zealot already. Game’s basically been reduced to just ‘play out the gameplay loop until you get bored then leave’, like basically every other modern game that exists. And while it’s gameplay loop is at least ‘unique’ from all the others, still basically keeps me engaged for like 3-4 games then I’m like ‘alright, think that’s it for the next month until I find myself in-between hyper fixations and don’t quite have the energy to jump on something new yet’.

Which I find sad, used to be excited to play this game, intrigued at what new things they where going to add, enthralled with every dev post and new update. Now, I’m kinda just, ‘mellowed out’, and one might argue ‘that’s a good thing!’. But as an ‘older head’, I liked the game when it was fully engaging to me to the point I sometimes played it without background noise. Now it’s firmly in the camp of ‘needs a youtube video keeping the other half of my brain engaged or else I’m probably gonna try and find something else’ territory, and it’s competing with quittttte the wide market share there.

Just doesn’t ‘hit’ like it used to, it’s been ground down to much and all it’s edges have been sanded away. That on top of Arbie’s just making the banter awful the moment one is introduced, and it’s like ‘yeahhhh, for something that used to pride itself on having so many vocals and so many different interactions, these days it’s just ‘TRAPPER’S SHOT HER LAST NET’ ‘REAPER!’ ‘GUNNER!’ ‘I WANT THEM DEAD!’ ‘GREEN FIRE GONE!’ ‘ROCK MEET HERATIC!’ and the various Combat Ability call outs’. Just, doesn’t have that spark anymore, and if I’ve learned anything from Destiny 2, ‘there’s only so long ‘a good combat loop’ can carry you, when there’s just nothing else holding one’s attention’.

Hello. I felt that and agreed with some things said.. Especially the part about the Power Creep

I started Darktide as a Veteran main but once the Power Creep started and there was no good changes to the Veteran, I was forced to abandon it because classes like Arbites became the most efficient and easiest way to complete Auric

And to make matters worse.. I came to the Darktide forums on and off to create posts to discuss this issue. I brought up many different things like how the Veteran has more passive nodes for Ranged weapons than melee yet lacks any meaningful ranged weaponry for higher difficulties. Only 4 people gave good responses. The rest ignored me or dismissed me.. Even though myself and the 4 others had a point

It isn’t the raw damage or RPM that is the issue for Veteran weaponry.. It is the fact that there isn’t more anti armor weaponry that can is versatile. Take a Bolter and you only have the ammo to respond to specific enemies. Take Plasma gun and same issue. Take the Las Gun and you are forced to ignore the armored targets. There is no winning with Veterans

Arbites doesn’t have that problem because I get a Shotgun that can dump trappers and other elites. Anything armored like a Crusher.. I can bonk that in 5 hits just using a club. Like whats the point?

with boltgun you can kill everything…

And then take a melee weapon for this…

This is what make interesting Darktide. The fact you have to cover different weakness… carapace, dreg ragers, trappers, monstrosities… you have to cover all these with your 2 weapons.
In fact Boltgun was the worse example. This weapon is not balanced and far too strong. I use it on my zealot, I don’t even try to aim… this weapon is definitively way too strong.

I started also Veteran but way before patch 13 (I bought the game at the release).
Played veteran until the patch that introduced veteran keystones. After that, I have played it less and less… And now that we will get the new class, I don’t think I will pick it as the new class is EXACTLY what I was expecting.
Close combat with ranged weapons is exactly what I wanted to play. I hope that the keystones won’t be bad…

sidenote: thank you Fatshark for the change on the first vet keystone. Too late because I had ceased to play veteran, but after more than 1 year, that’s great you finished to listen. Sad, that it was too late.

I haven’t played in weeks. I still frequent this forum as I think a forum is honestly the best way to discuss anything.

Reddit always ends up in some sort of echo chamber due to the up- and downvote system. Discord is way too fast or impossible to get back to a specific point later.

FS is the king of creating a core winning formula and then making the worst possible choices in everything surrounding it. I honestly hope a next Tide game will be made by another studio.

EXACTLY what I think
I hate Reddit for that. Only the opinion that is the most accepted can be voiced. Every dissent opinion is immediately bashed, and this lead to a total lack of discussion. Also, I hate their interface…

And Discord… come on. You can’t rely on this for the social part of a game. Dune awakening did it, this is a MAJOR failure (the lack of social tools is regularly pointed).

because “Brexit means breakfast”.

The only thing that got me to quit playing Vermintide 2 all the time was Darktide’s launch and now I’m back to playing that thanks to the current state of Havoc. It feels good to have enemies actually take damage when I hit them.

Also doesn’t help that Vermintide 2 still gets more content lmao. 5 maps in the time that Darktide has gotten 2 and one-fifths of a map. With another fraction of a map well on the way.
