First I’m going to premise this: I have a desktop and a laptop, both with Windows 11, both using RTX GPUs, a 3090 TI and a 3070 each, the difference resides in the CPU, the desktop one is using an AMD (Ryzen 7 3700X), the laptop is Intel instead (11th gen Intel Core i7-11800H), and the only way to play at the desktop is using only 1 worker thread and crashing really sporadically (tried even with 2 threads and CTD a lot), while on the laptop I had the opportunity to play with 6 threads and no crashes at all, zero, after some hours of playing.
With that information at hand I asked some of my friends which processors were they using while playing the beta/release version of the game, and they told me they are using Intel CPUs and never crashed once.
Now I’m here to ask y’all, which CPU do you use and how much Worker Threads did you put into the game to play without crashes?
Steps to Reproduce:
If using an AMD processor
Put at 1 Worker Thread and play some mission (not necessarily completing)
Try again putting at 2 to 6 threads (your choice).
You’ll notice that you’ll crash inevitably at some point.
If using an INTEL processor
Same steps as before.
You’ll notice that you won’t crash as much as the AMD does, plus it wont stutter/lag at all.
Worker threads set to 9 (default, could go to 10, haven’t tested it).
I’ve crashed I believe 3 times since release, I usually play with a friend who’s also using intel, don’t remember the exact model, but I’m quite sure it’s either a 9000 or a 10000, similar experience to mine.
EDIT: seeing @Mido answer, I’ll add that I’m on W10.
The only thing that prevents crashing for me is setting the thread count to 1. If I set it to even 2, I’m gonna crash often (usually at like 1 per match, sometimes even multiple timer per match).
What’s funnier is that when I crash, in the windows event I see that “nvlddmkm” is the source. Exit code in launcher logs say “Exit code: 0x00000000”.
So SOMEHOW a CPU thing (multithreading) causes a GPU crash.
I have tried a lot of things. Reinstalling drivers clean, rolling drivers back, updating drivers of everything else (CPU, motherboard etc), disabling some services, turning off DLSS/RTX/other settings and still nothing helps, only limiting thread count to 1 (which is sad because I lose like half the FPS this way). None of updates fixed the problem for me, that’s been the behaviour since day 1 of the beta.
There is a theory that this problem happens on Windows 11 22H2 and going back to a previous version or Win 10 helps (and for some people it helped) but I’m not gonna go this far as it would take a loooot of time to setup everything again.
Given I don’t crash all that often, I had to do a bit of research, but I’ve got it.
My last crash happened yesterday at around 3:25pm, I’m certain is this one because I opened the game after the crash for a very short time, like 2 minutes, so it was easy to pinpoint on the log,
Error code on that crash was: 0xFA718003
Windows shows no errors at that time, but does show a nvlddmkm error an hour later
Unsure of what this error means in this case, as I was playing darktide during that time, and it didn’t crash.
Unless windows event viewer and the log for some reason display different time zones, but given I’m even on the same time zone as the devs, it seems very unlikely.
EDIT: Worth adding, this crash happened precisely the moment I interacted with an ammo crate (the deployable one), so it may not be triggered by the same thing, but I have crashed to desktop seemingly for no reason before, will try to check logs if it happens again.
Changed to 1 worker threat, no change in my crash situation. Still just as frequent.
Have noticed that all my crashed coincide with pressing the trigger on my mouse so suspect an input command issue.
I have an AMD 9 5900x and I have never crashed in 50 hours. I am running with 21 threads out of my 24 total. I did disconnect 2X on the early beta but have never crashed (RTX 3080). I don’t think it’s that simple and I believe it’s on the server end. Just an opinion.
