Crafting makes me not care about the new weapons/patch

This is my favorite line:
Strategy

goals.

Ah yes, the grand strategy of pressing a button repeatedly and hoping for the best.

When will this pain and suffering end? How many more lives need to be claimed? Let the brutality end.

I just do not understand what FS is going for here. They’ve created a condition where adding new content to the game pisses people off… surely they can’t want that.

The new map is fantastic, the soundtrack whips the llama’s ass, the stims are a neat add and the Karnak twins are jolly. The new gear seems great, testing low level versions in the psykanium definitely showed promise but when I tried getting a usable version of the new axe I blew away all my saved plasteel in moments and still don’t have anything to show for it.

It’s such a weird, confounding position to be in. All the new stuff is great but I’m now feeling like just walking away from the game again.

The whole content thing feels like a half-implemented system some C-suit or Design Lead can’t let go of.

They build RNG into weapon availability, acquisition, stats, perks, blessings, and levels of perks and blessings. They’ve developed multiple different stores with their own characters/voices/scenery/etc through which weapons are acquired and updated, and even cutscenes to explain the jankiness in-universe.

Normally this is done to create frustration that can be bypassed with lots of in-game resources (gathered through extended play) or cash. In Darktide’s case however, there is no bypass mechanism, the design paradigm is only partially implemented, only half the system is actually present.

So we have a system designed to generate frustration, but with no outlet for that frustration, and this just undercuts everything FS puts out for the game no matter how well done otherwise.

Yea well said. Someone pointed out on another thread that multi-layer gachas are illegal. I’m not familiar with the law but it would make sense if the intent was to have a cash money bypass in effect but then that didn’t work out and they haven’t decided what to do yet.

What was confusing about my comment?

The illegal in Japan multi-level gacha thing is you can’t have a pull scheme where you can’t pull item C until you had already pulled items A and B. It’s not exactly the case in DT, paid or not, but the layers of RNG in DT really is pretty ludicrous nonetheless.

I see, I guess since you technically are getting the item you want at Brunts every time and either blue or gold item tiers could give you one blessing you want it passes. Might be able to argue it in court I suppose.

I don’t think it’ll really hold up in court since there’s no monetisation involved in the crafting. Not illegal doesn’t mean it’s not badly designed, unethical, dodgy, malicious, a placeholder and other words that have been used to describe the system.

Right I meant that were it monetized it could possibly be argued in court which might be one reason why there is currently no cash bypass option.

What you could argue for though, I think, is the false advertising to buyers and investors about what the crafting system would be like, and then providing the exact opposite.

I think my plan is I’m literally going over to the SST co-op game and playing that for a while.

They basically just added from 30 to 100 levels and stuck cosmetic stuff though out the milestones and some fairly powerful rewards for getting to 40 and 90 respectively.

Sure it’s a grind but I know it’s one I can eventually get through to play with the cool stuff.

With Darktide I can either luck out instantly or get stuck on an endless grind. Tbh I might just play Psyker if I decide to play more since he has 0 new weapons and I don’t need to interact with the crafting.

And i know some 5 head is going to go “just take a break” but is a break REALLY going to help when the gameplay basically has a parasite attached to it which the dev team refuses to address? Should i really be feeling like “oh boy, i need a break from all this new content” right after an update drops? Like god dam.

what game?

Starship Troopers: Extermination.

It’s a coop game set in universe made by the Squad devs and part of the team that made the Squad SST mod.

They are literally updating it today with an entirely new planet, free cosmetics, and other stuff.

It’s an early access game but at least it’s upfront about it.

From a player retention perspective, crafting sucks: it makes people want to quit since they’ll see hours of playtime of materials go poof.

From a monetization perspective, crafting sucks: it doesn’t have a paid outlet for the frustrations it generates.

From a game design standpoint, crafting sucks: most of it serves no purpose to the player (see: T1 and T2 perks and blessings) and it makes balancing weapons far more annoying than it should be since everything has a bunch of random attributes. It also highly encourages players to not engage with it at all.

From a PR perspective, crafting sucks: people complain about this feature more than any other aspect of the game that isn’t a technical issue. It’s a millstone around the game’s neck.

There is not a single redeemable thing about the system as it currently stands unless the goal of the devs is some misguided belief that people will willingly pull on a slot machine for hours on end - except there’s not enough materials to even do that, so I actually don’t know wtf their plan is!

This entire thing needs to be tossed in the garbage and the weapon customization mod implemented with actual gameplay effects.

This has been the player sentiment since its release last year and FS said nothing but “we’re working on a reply” variants sprinkled with “we’re discussing it internally” and the occasional “I’ve passed your feedback”.

At this point the game needs to die for them to understand that it’s absolute dogsht. Like the word filter in this forum.

I have me eye on it. Was avoiding it due to early access (but then again I bought darktide beta). Hell divers 2 I am pretty excited for and there’s a lot of similarities.

I’m thinking I should hop back over to the RPG side for a while. I haven’t finished Baldur’s Gate yet and Rogue Trader is about to drop.
