You’re right in the sense that in-game cosmetics hold no materialistic value.
and yet; if it was truly THAT silly, who would think to sell such a completely worthless good?
Value isn’t entirely defined by it’s materialistic properties. There is value in, what is a form of art, and the ability to show if off to your peers.
Yeah, it’s not scummy to try and sell something for any price you ask for it. Theoretically the market would let you know if you’re asking for too little or too much.
The difference to me however; if I copied the mona lisa and drew a mustache on her while hiding how much it’s actually worth with a fake currency, you’d also feel some sort of way about me asking for 896 million USD.
If I can look at a skin which realistically took a handfull of clicks to alter, it’s clearly not worth 15$ and should’ve come as an option with the original skin.
A genius, like the guy who made the pet rock or whatever.
And besides, selling or buying this junk isn’t silly. It sells and people want it. What I think is silly is trying to argue that the prices aren’t fair. If one cosmetic is worth $15 to someone and they buy it, and a recolor is the same price, that’s not unfair. It may be worth the price to someone else, while they found the original ugly.
I don’t see how that’s silly. Yeah, value is in the eye of the beholder but there are things that are scummy about how FS is selling their, in a vacuum, “fair” cosmetics.
Currently, legally, there is nothing wrong with selling a recolor. It’s lazy but why not? If someone buys it.
But there really is no good reason or argument for why a recolor needs to be sold seperately. If I’m already paying 15$ for the skin, let me change the colors to the ones I prefer.
The fact that they could easily be a bundle but are being sold seperately, when there is no beneficial reason for the consumer, is what’s scummy about them in my eyes.
You’re free to do it, but yea I think it’s silly because obviously everyone would want more for less. But these are the prices, they don’t affect the game in a meaningful way, and they help pay to keep the game running. If they were 10x the price, it’d be the same deal but I’d probably never plunk down a dime. If they were half as expensive, more people would probably buy stuff, but I wouldn’t. [edit: I word this poorly. I wouldn’t buy more Aquilas, because my relationship with the game and cosmetics is that I throw FS a few bucks when I’ve got some cash and am reminded of how much I enjoy the game and the many hundreds of hours I’ve gotten out of it (like after a big update). I’d get twice as many cosmetics if they were half the price, but wouldn’t spend more. I’d be happier about that, but it wouldn’t keep me playing, and it wouldn’t make me say “ah yes these e-pants are finally the right price!”
And just as another note: this whole argument is quite apart from the FOMO, which I do think is a manipulative tactic.
Everything that follows this is perfectly reasonable and I have no issues with that at all. It’s a good stance to have.
It’s not about wanting more for less, it’s about the fact that they could’ve sold more skins had they offered better value. The fact of getting more for less is a coincidental benefit but not the point.
What is silly is that FS doesn’t seem to want to give us better offers.
I specifically didn’t buy what’s on offer because I knew there are other colors or because I suspected there would be other colors I would like more.
I didn’t miss out on the blue version of a skin I would’ve liked in red, they missed out on my money when they didn’t offer me the choice between a color I didn’t and did care for.
I can’t wear more than one anyways so there’s no loss for them what so ever.
“It is what it is” is not a compelling argument.
This is not entirely true. I’ve had people ask me if they should get DT. I told them about how their in-game store works and some ended up not getting DT because of that.
Word of mouth is powerful and having a shitty store doesn’t help.
People ask to this day if they should get a specific game and I’ve seen plenty of examples where they didn’t because of non-fantastic word of mouth.
I’m going to admit, I didn’t read all 92 messages but I wasn’t talking about FOMO. I don’t think FOMO needs to be relitigated. Who’s going to argue that FOMO (in DTs case) is good?
We really don’t know how lower prices would affect FS’s revenue. It might not be a win to them to half the price and then only sell 30% more items. Some people just never buy cosmetics.
“It should be different because I want it to be” isn’t either, but I think that’s also a reductive characterization of the arguments going on here.
Sorry, I meant gameplay. There are surely people who don’t or won’t play because there are any microtransactions.
I reiterated my stance on FOMO because you said the following, which I read as a nod to FOMO:
This thread is pretty easy to follow. People are going to pay for DLC, some are willing to pay a premium for extra cosmetics, and they’re annoyed to discover that Fatshark already has finished content to put in the slop shop.
It doesn’t take any sleuthing to guess why they’d have slop content ready to go for the slop shop, but that doesn’t change the appearance that it’s in poor taste and double-dipping on the players.
The only wrongly entitled replies to this thread are dudes like you telling others what they’re allowed to complain about.
But if I felt what I wrote above and have friends that agree with me, I can’t be the only one thinking similarly.
It makes sense to me that better value offers would sell better. I’m not even saying they should reduce their prices but offer more (color variants) in a bundle.
They are likely not making changes to the store because it works for them or because they are content. I’m just saying that it could work better while being a friendlier store.
What I boiled your sentance down to is accurate, no? It’s not supposed to be a dishonest reduction. I’m just saying that you essentially said “it is what it is”. I just want to be perfectly clear is all
What you boiled mine down to is not fully accurate however. I’m not saying that it should be different BECAUSE I’d like to see it. I would but that’s neither the point nor the reason. I’m saying it should be different because it would be to everyones benefit, including FS.
That’s a fair misunderstanding. I was refering to you saying that recolors are fair while I think they can be scummy in a way.
I think both of our reductions are equally fair (in that they’re not really). The prices are what FS has determined makes sense for the amount they’re likely to sell. I’m sure more work/knowledge than you or I could muster went into deciding on those prices. The prices work for FS, and if they didn’t they’d be changed.
I’m just going to politely “agree to disagree” on that. I already said how and why I think so
I am going to agree that FS will know how to run their business better than either of us outsiders.
My logic still works though. If a store treats you with more respect, you will spend more money there. Crazy how it took me so long to put my point into a singular sentance.
Not just more events, IMO, every single event from now on should come with Earnable Aquilas as the final reward for the time commitment. No if ands or heretic buts.
