It’s not dishonest to charge X for Y, as long as when the customer accepts the transaction they get what they were promised.
Prices for things go up all the time.
If you think it’s worth it, you buy it. You get what you bought. That’s not a scam, that’s a transaction. If you don’t think it’s worth it, because 2+ years ago it was a better value, then you don’t buy it.
It absolutely is dishonest when it is implemented in this fashion. They purposely obfuscate the entire catalog for a tiny percentage of parts you can’t directly measure against (for goodness sake there have been skins posted here that we’re like, 2 hex values off the same color as a previous skin sold for higher and tricking people who already owned the previous who weren’t careful, and this is the exact reason we will never get color selection/paints). No catalog history, no comparison costs, etc.
You literally have to go do your own research on third-party sites who actually have documented this stuff to even understand if you’re getting a good deal in the context of this game.
Everything about it is tailor made and designed to trick people and it’s absolutely vile.
The worst part is that they will tell the artists/developers that it is for their “best interest” as well while C-Suite and stock holders are the only ones that will actually see the meat of it. That extra revenue is most definitely not going to the creatives beyond a yearly bonus which is a pittance compared to what it is most likely bringing in from people who suffer for poor impulse control or as stated above, a lack of knowledge due to the ethereal nature of FOMO garbage.
There’s an argument that the FOMO (not the price) element makes it a scam, but I don’t agree with it. The FOMO sucks, but if you like something enough to pay for it then there’s no scam in the fact that there’s some other crap out there you might like more. What about products you’ve never heard of? You’re not getting scammed by buying one thing because something else exists out there.
And with the way the shop actually functions, there’s no guarantee that we’ll ever see some cosmetics again. I’ve never “settled” for something I don’t like, even though I’m aware of all the cosmetics that have ever been and think some of them are cool. And I have a hard time thinking that this is actually a problem for people.
I 100% agree anything is worth what someone else is willing to pay, however, we have anti-scam laws for a reason, as that model ONLY works when the customer is informed.
But informed of what? That 3 times 2.5 years ago bundles had guns and trinkets? Or that other cosmetics exist?
I’m not aware of any parallel…all previous prices need not be posted at the point of sale and a company’s entire back catalog (which they may resurrect at any point in the future) doesn’t need to be shown to customers before purchases.
The FOMO is bad because it creates pressure to buy things because they may be gone for months/years/forever.
Good point. I can’t wait to play cosmetic whack-a-mole with the shop. Do I buy a decent looking set now or will an even better looking one come out literally next week?
you don’t need to buy all the new arbities stuff in the store though. I for instance am thinking of buying the cool jacket, but thats it and im going to be using xbox reward points to do so.
I don’t trust Fatshark to start doing so unless at least the next two events have Aquilas as the top reward. Otherwise it’s just something they did for Skulls.
Agree. I will be first in line with a pitchfork if Aquilas are not the final reward for every event going forward.
I still think 500 is very generous for the first Aquilas intro. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was reduced to 2-300 per event. I think 2400-3000 earnable aquilas through events PER YEAR is a fair starting point. Just enough to get one full set, or trench coat item, from the store (2400).
