I feel the risk & reward aspect of scrounging, forcing players to split up for materials or resources, is pretty crucial to the flow and tension of the game. The effect it has on different humans in different situations makes it a potent RNG mechanism. I think it’d be a much more boring game if we didn’t have reasons to split up.
this is some sort of indirect buff though
people getting ammo (that they didn’t physically pick up) thanks to other players
it does indeed change difficulty
because in a true duo, in a normal context, both people have to pick up ammo
if something like that would exist, some of them would benefit because didn’t go physically to take ammo by themselves, getting some marginal advantage in not moving and getting ammo thanks to another player, where potentially could save them because of that
also want to add that game is designed well with balance ammo, where usually ammo is enough for all players
it is either people getting too much ammo and not being wise in sharing or not exploring the possible spots where ammo can spawn, and most of the time is people missing pick ups, also in general, stimms, and worse medikits/ammo crates
That’s a fair counter argument if you think there’s a fundamental stress factor involved for gameplay. That said, I think what we see more of is people pushing ahead to get ammo, rather than splitting off and searching out nooks and crannies.
Sure, though ideally one that incentivizes a slightly broader array of play in the process.
Have ya’ll ever considered getting good at melee, so you don’t have to shoot nearly at all?
I’ve got a counter-proposition.
Picking up a big ammo bag when you are almost full does waste most of it. I propose that if the excess ammo wasted is greater or equal to a small ammo pickup, then upon picking up the big bag a small pickup spawns in its place.
This way the person who gets filled up cannot take the small pickup (because they are full) and someone else can get a few rounds until the next crate.
Have you considered that people, maybe, might like shooting?
I have the opposite problem more often, where people need to be coaxed into picking up the ammo. Like it’s ok little dude, you can have it! Ogryn hit more and shoot less, and take as needed!!
Polite Aussie problems I guess
And then one time a martyrdom zealot took my lunch (medicae) and I am still not over it…
Great idea. This would make players contemplate how they should use their ammo instead of mag dumping into every poxwalker horde.
Who doesn’t? But it’s unfair for the rest of the team when a teammate chooses a very ammo hungry weapon and mag dumps it on everything he sees. Especially so when the culprit is a Gun Psyker that could use staves instead.
I don’t dispute that, but it just rubs me the wrong way when the person I replied to tries to imply that it’s just a skill issue that people don’t melee.
It could be Coherency only, and it would be an even split amongst the players that are using guns.
I miss the third ammo crate, like yeah get rid of the third med bag (and station batteries for the med bay but that’s my opinion, the only loss would be the voice lines) but the ammo crate was your solution to people not bothering to loot for anything. While spamming the comms with ‘I need ammo’ and not walking 10ft to the bag you have marked. It would have been even more awesome with the advent of passing carry items to not have to leave it behind (psykers can carry ammo crate when using a staff despite what most players think).
Ammo boxes as pills for ammo. Takes up the stim slot.
On the rare occasions I run into someone who is running through the map, vacuuming up all the ammo, dropping ammo crates early, and double or even triple dipping from said ammo crates… it’s almost always an ogryn with stubbas, or a loner zealot with bolter… And they ruin the game for everyone else on the team EVERY time. Besides kicking, not much we can do mechanically to discourage it.
That said, I think there’s a comfy middleground here: WASTED ammo should be shared across the rest of the team. That way when ogryn or zealot decide to double dip the ammo crate to refill 10% of their ammo, they aren’t mechanically punishing and f***ing over the team.
I get that darktide is supposed to be a cooperative game, but a big part of enhancing that experience is not screwing over 3/4 players because 1 person is just selfish.

For my own part, almost all the arguments I see in this thread so far against the idea are basically either “I don’t want someone else to get something I opened a box for” and “there’s plenty of ammo so people just need to look”, which I don’t feel are particularly great arguments on their own.
And so, your solution to lazy players that don’t pay attention to tagging, and so to collaboration, is that they should get ammos without even doing an effort to pick them?
This means that these players could waste them, not even trying to search for them, and there should be slaves that look for their ammos?

it is either people getting too much ammo and not being wise in sharing or not exploring the possible spots where ammo can spawn, and most of the time is people missing pick ups, also in general, stimms, and worse medikits/ammo crates
They don’t open chests… how many times I have found a medikit in a chest not opened by the entire team. Too many times.
And when I say that they had not opened, I mean that they had to walk through this same room, they must have been near this chest, and they just ran away without checking it.
And the funnier is when I tag an ammo bag and that one guy with low ammo doesn’t want to walk back and say 2 minutes later “I need ammos!”.

I get that darktide is supposed to be a cooperative game, but a big part of enhancing that experience is not screwing over 3/4 players because 1 person is just selfish.
Well, I know that you don’t describe my behavior but I sometimes I want to pick so fast chests that I could take ammos even if I don’t need them. Also, now, considering players behavior, I tend to take ammos when I am away of the group. Especially if nobody is in orange / red and that I know they won’t come even if I tag.
I have sometimes to go to the group, give a crate and return to pick an other one…
Yes… we are here
I am not talking about players like you at all.
I am talking about the guy who shoots once so he can pick up the big ammo bag while at least one other teammate is red or orange, and actively sprinting towards the drop. I am talking about the guys who finish an engagement and immediately grabs the ammo drops to top up at the test of the team’s expense. Whether they are trolling, griefing, inconsiderate, or just don’t know any better, the game is still punishing the rest of the team for one person’s poor cooperation/selfishness.
To better demonstrate my point, I’ll give an example: I saw an Aurich Damnation run turn into a wipe explicitly because the two recon lasgun vets were at red ammo the entire game, while a single ogryn ran from box to box hoovering up
Every
Single
Drop
To keep his stubbas full.,

Yeah I know… Actually we see again bad bolter players that use auto mode and ask to get all ammmos.
And that’s a pity…

Yes seen that also. Or the ogryn that use rumbler from the start to the end (that is eventually a wipe).
But for me the OP proposition won’t permit players to learn from experience.
When such things happen, you can also inform the player what he did wrong and how he was the one that made the wipe happens (no need to be rude, just exposing facts)
People don’t take well to being corrected, even politely. That’s going to work maybe 1/10 players.
Unfortunately, the only way to deal with it is to mechanically design around the possibility of one player greifing their entire team by taking every single ammo drop.
I’ve clutched aurich 4s with rumbler, sooo, I don’t know what you mean there. Then again, I havent tried it on any higher than a 4.

Just that it can happen with several weapons, and that I experimented same experience you described, but with a rumbler user.

You have a tool to deal with that… you ask first, you vote “kick” if he persists.
