Figured I’d throw my voice behind this topic too. I would love to see some of the penances reworked into something I don’t feel immediate dread upon seeing, because they either sound miserable to try and accomplish without a premade group or just outright awful for group play.
Personal note, I completed the Preacher penance for not using your ranged weapon in a Malice difficulty game. Now, the group was randomly formed and happened to consist of 2 vets, a psyker, and myself. Lucky, but it still felt bad to play through knowing that I was contributing less and not able to enjoy half the gameplay. It was only the one mission, but I don’t know, seems like the wrong experience to encourage? I was extremely lucky as it was my first attempt at the penance. It wouldn’t be difficult or unlikely to get screwed out of a good time for much longer.
From what I have seen so far a lot of the challenges really do just take away from the gameplay.
Like maintaining max warpcharge for 300 secs, while it seems bugged at the moment, having to do that in one session with out dropping warpcharge just feels rather unfun, and that is what the issue is with a lot of these challenges really.
I’d honestly much rather just have it be something along the lines of:
Maintain Maxwarp charge for a total of X hours. While it would take a lot longer to do which I think is fine, it would at least be something that gets done over the course of just playing.
The same goes for knocking people of the edge as a psyker.
Reward me for playing rather than having to go out my way and end up feeling like I am not contributing to the experience as I try to do a challenge.
And there are much worse ones that this that I am sure the community is more than well aware of right now
Just made a quick edit after being shown this. While this may not be the case for a lot of it, but the way they currently are will with out a doubt lead to nonsense like this
The ogryn has one as well that impossible, complete a match without taking any HP damage. unless its bugged damage bleeds through toughness very slowly so 1-2 hits will end up removing 1 hp and there goes that penace. The only way possible to complete it would be cheesing it by joining a private game right before they extract.
The stay in max coherency range is also pretty much impossible or requires any zealots and ogryns to pretty much never use their specials.
I’ve got this one too, although I did it with Autogun and didn’t kill highlighted enemies. I guees it’s busted.
i only play veteran and it’s annoying to have a 100% accuracy with 0 ammo remaining on a difficulty where your forced to play together as a cohesive unit on a class where your passive literally gives you ammo playing cohesively , makes that challenge harder than completing a max difficulty run ,
Some of the Penances are not bad, Long Bomb was relatively easy once I found out to just do a quick click on an high arc throw. the On Overwatch? give me a damn break when 90% of the time you get hit by some random enemy that spawns behind you. This one for Skullbreaker *Completely * relies other people. Because if you have just one person that either lags behind or thinks they’re they greatest player ever it’s ruined. Not to mention you can’t see it diameter of Coherence to begin with. Please retool these Fatshark cause some of these are ridiculous.
My only hope is that fat shark have these in as beta placeholders’ challenges, and when the full release comes out, they’ll changed the requirements to unlock them (please, just tie it to progression Fat Shark).
Some of these challenges I looked at and essentially just gave up on getting.
The ‘sense of accomplishment’ or ‘challenge’ I’d possibly feel from unlocking these cosmetics would just be too much of a pain to go through, which is a shame because they do look cool.
I’m 90% the 5 minutes at max stacks is for heresy, not malice (the description says malice but I suspect it is wrong). One time I tried it on heresy and it started showing progress.
Agreed, regarding the spirit of the original post and some of the others that others have picked up upon.
I got flashbacks to Valve’s first set of Team Fortress II achievements which were also for the Medic class: some were simple milestones (X healing done total), some reinforced good gameplay (Heal X amount without dying in a round) and others were terrible that actively encouraged you to (at best) play against the class role and at worst made you actively drag down the team.
As a point of note, Valve mentioned with the next set (Pyro class?) that they’d learned and indeed, most were milestone and/or rewarded playing the class well.
Back to Darktide, there are far too many that, imo, seem to be designed to drag the team down. The one that sticks in my mind is ‘suicide bomber 3 elites’ as the psyker. In a 4 player coop game you’re actively encouraged to die, leaving 3 other people to pick up slack for a cosmetic? Things like that, vs the reason given for no scoreboard seems… inconsistent. I really hope they get retooled into rewarding teamwork or simply into milestones. If not then make them a toggle to give you a penalty in the mission, and the other players get a big reward for carrying your backside through.
I’m not sure if it’s a bug but I didn’t get a penance for preacher (finish a mission without firing a round on malice+) when backfilling, so, likely your cheese doesn’t work either. If backfilling disqualifies penance progress, the descriptions should tell you that, though.
I can’t even figure out how to throw 20 guys into a chasm for a basic psyker outfit.
A lot of these challenges honestly aren’t fun.
The throw 20 into a chasm for psyker doesn’t have to all be at once. That is something I’ve found in alot of the penances that want you to do something to X number of enemies. They’re all poorly worded at best.

Honestly fatshark should look at deep rock galactic progression system for example and everything will be so much better. I know DRG graphic can’t compare to this, and that game is dirt cheap but man when I play drg it’s feel so much more rewarding.
That game also have secondary objective and not even once I finish the mission without not finishing the second objective, They also have random event pop out time to time and rewarding the player when they find loot or finish random event by give them cosmetic.
But 12 hours in darktide not even once I collect all the secondary objective.
No way in hell you can survive on your own, If for what ever reason you desire to split up from the group to find stuff and the net bro desire to choose you, You’re done.
At least have we do something interesting as a group or give player something that feel likely to make us want to play more. you guys have the most badass piece of fiction IP on your hand. Let player do badass stuff with a badass weapon and dress like a badass will not make you guys bankrupt right?

That’s the challenge that I probably want to complete most, and I legitimately cannot figure out how to do it. Stacking 20 enemies all within range of a single active skill is hard enough already, but doing it at the very edge of a cliff so that they all go over at the same time?
Seems genuinely impossible to me.

On the Ogryn one: Even with Lynchpin to give you +50% cohesion range, so many missions require splitting up/spreading out that it’s legit impossible. I’ve even touched in on this in the Ogryn feedback thread I made, but things that can fail the challenge for you.
Legitimately challenges like this, that are ENTIRELY out of the players control should be removed. As I suggested for ‘Friends will be Friends’, a good change that would still require some work to do, and play into the role ogryns are supposed to fill would be to have something like ‘revive x players on malice or higher while under fire’ or something similar, not an ‘all or nothing’ but a ‘you can work toward it over time by playing your role decently’
