Modders and community members like @Agayek have present fixes to the dozens of issues the game has had since release. Everything from QOL, UI, performance, even to the game not executing commands properly, or just balance.
While a few of those are debatable, a lot of those fixes have been unanimously agreed upon by the community.
So my question is, why do FS devs refuse to implement community made fixes to the games technical and usability related issues? Is it arrogance? Ignorance? Or simply spite?
Because I can’t for the life of me understand why the below example is where you finally ask, when people have been yapping solutions into the void for 4 years now
The mind does indeed boggle as to why they don’t include many QOL community fixes into the game.
They refuse to even add a glossary/bestiary or proper descriptions or tool tips. So many easy wins that have already been created and just need added to a branch and tested and released.
Exactly. It’s not like the modders are reluctant either. It makes absolutely no sense to me.
Even leaving out the debatable ones, some of these seem like such no brainers. Just a few off the top of my head:
Chatblock - automatically block when typing something in chat
MemoryLeakFix - helps you avoid game crashes
True level - shows your level past 30
guaranteeX - helps mitigate server rubberbanding when you press your ability/special or q to swap weapons
inspect from party finder - lets you check someones build in the havoc party finder
I seemingly never run into any issues that these “modders” do on a regular, frequent basis. The occasional silent trapper but I still always hear the net gun fire even if they don’t have any voice lines.
No “modder” can do anything about the maps and spawn rates.
There does seem to be an ever increasing number of very bad players who can’t play the game very well and rely heavily on third party cheat mods to tell them when to doge, highlight specials throughout the whole map, do the interrogator puzzle for them (though the Skitari skull has that built into the game now). Maybe Fatshark needs to address this first?
It could be just workload being spent on other things. It’s not like they can just swap a few numbers for the Inferno or Purgatus flamer on a random patch day and assume it will be beneficial for the game at large, without consulting this with whichever designer party is responsible for keeping the gameplay balanced.
Big Balance Beta in Vermintide 2, in mid 2020, was an adaptation of balance changes made by certain modders - it can happen, even if the conditions for adopting player-made changes are unclear to this day, and it’s probably a plethora of factors.
I’m confident that FS knows that at certain difficulty levels pickrate - which is one of the metrics they apparently check for keeping balance changes in mind - for Inferno is higher than other options, but making Inferno weaker in certain situations is just solving a problem and facing backlash as a result. Maybe according to them there is a better way to tackle this - who’s to say?
so custom_hud is the sole reason fatshark gets the odd cosmetic purchase from me
second to that is my beloved scoreboard and truelevel for i want to see who’s “bigger&better”
latency isnt shown without a mod as well, so one would have to put the licked finger into the wind to see whether the server “blows”.
what dev isnt putting in a ping indicator as default?
you see, mods are the thing that keep people playing when devs aint moving for some years.
and no one’s advocating for “helpers” here, quite the opposite in turning the consolish bloat OFF
Hot take perhaps, but it’s a lot of text noise to parse through from UX perspective before you get to know what a talent does at a high level - most of this information is likely redundant for a casual player, and the people that care about number crunching will find that information anyway.
I’m not saying it would not be beneficial, but it goes back to development time being spent someplace else, and FS hasn’t really been keen on adopting QOL changes througout the years. It happens once in a while, and when it does, it will likely not match the quality that some third-party people can accomplish through mods. There may just not be enough resources for them to make it more complex than it needs to be.
Probably beating the dead horse here but GW and their legally binding contracts work in peculiar ways.
Also Darktide at this point is in borderline maintenance mode if you ask me. Sure, new stuff comes in but it’s way too slow, the majority of their manpower is already working on something else.
Most likely, any community changes not being added to the base game is a mix of a) the devs disagreeing on its value for whatever reason, b) the community actually being wrong, c) the devs not having the time or cycles to spare to integrate, test, refine, and iterate community fixes, and d) the existence of mods that contain the solution meaning players can just install the mod and the devs don’t feel like they have to worry about it any further.
Fatshark’s dev cycle has always been very slow, for better or worse, and it’s not entirely unreasonable for them to be reluctant to set aside whatever plans they’ve laid for that time and to instead analyze, adapt, and integrate community ideas and changes into the game.
It would certainly be very nice if they did; Lord knows I’ve put enough effort into futzing with the game that I would appreciate some of it being realized. But there’s also very reasonable reasons why it can take a long time for such things to work their way through the CICD pipeline.
There has to be a middle ground. Ok, dont make them paragraphs, but what they are at this point is also very little information is being transfered. Like some of the talents and blitzes are straight up confusing as to what it really does. Some stagger, some dont, some do a bunch of things not mentioned in the talent. like really, at least go somewhere in the middle, if you dont want to go all out.
or at the very least let it be an option rather than something that is at themercy of being updated by some poor selfless modder whenever they are free
It’s a feature that would need maintenance still. Consider that at some point in Vermintide 2’s lifetime FS has decided to ditch maintaining the PC UI in favour of a more console-friendly look, because they couldn’t warrant upkeeping two looks, for two different platforms.
That’s not to say it would apply in the same way, but either way, it would be a lot of extra localisation, and while it is value added to players - mind you a minority, too - it’s also a cost to upkeep.
I’m in the boat that gives the community of dedicated people agency and community-driven resources over how much they need to know about certain skills or effects or interactions, especially since that would indirectly and figuratively make the devs spend less time on upkeeping it and more time on actually developing the game, and people an opportunity to mentor other people (or themselves). The devs weren’t interested in enclosing too much information to their players in the first place, if some of it wasn’t there from the get-go.
One other possible reason is the devs are currently cooking something that would invalidate it entirely. For example if FS is currently working on a revamp of all DoT debuffs that will totally upend how the flame staff works, making changes to how the flame staff works currently could look like a waste of time since it’s going to be changed soon.
very heartbreaking to hear and probably true. because well, from that one rumor, and linked in, a lot of their employees are now using unreal engine, which could only mean their next project.
