my item level is around 280 and ive been leveling up some of the other characters , at level 10 i can either join a vet group which will involve following 3 level 25+ people around as they mow everything down from range , its fast and easy but its not really playing the game.
or i can get kicked from champ for being too low level.

Sometimes, yeah, that can happen. Especially with the current meta of Sienna and Ironbreaker using flamethrowers to annihilate all hordes. Maybe try hosting your own games? 
You could also try to play few games with the bots - they are better at the game than many players and insta kill specialists.
