I don’t think there is any problem with it as it’s the first feature that can be set up in the first place.
Rather, I think the biggest problem with the mods currently being released is the healthbar.
This is an obvious cheat, being able to visually see how much HP enemy has gives you an advantage over other players.
I know some people think it’s fine because it’s PVE, but to those who don’t use mods, it’s not fair and I ruining the game.
I think mods that give clear advantage over other players when used should be banned.
It’s a cosmetic change that affects you and you alone. Just like the weapons attachment mod (although that is client-side only, unfortunately). It’s a PvE game, any mod that does not negatively affect other players should be allowed, including server-side changes.
This mod literally gives you no advantage, other than being able to change hitboxes, which you can still do technically by making a new character. So the only reason FS would have against this is it allows the player to bypass hours of grinding up a new character.
Fatshark clearly can not (or will not) add-in (or finish) the dozens of needed and requested customization and QoL changes, so I welcome the modding community’s effort. If it wasn’t for mods, I would’ve left the game a while ago.
since it’s not something that you can change mid-game I don’t think it’s a problem. You could literally just create a new character to achieve the same thing the mod is doing, so it’s fine.
If you could change it mid-game then that could be problematic. Small characters are harder to hit behind cover - so if you’re in a shootout it’d be cheating to minimize size, then when the horde is coming increase again to get better headshots. But since you have to go back to character select to implement the adjustment, no problem.
Generally if someone is able to mess with your server’s database it is never a good thing. The developer should be quick to bottle up vulnerabilities. The main issue that arises is malicious users exploiting this to their benefit. Such cases include offloading rootkits or malware code onto unsuspecting users. The outcome is either using their computer as a zombie in a DDOS network, stealthily gathering information for social engineering attacks, possible ransomware, and much more. The list goes on, on what kind of mischievous things a bad actor can do.
Security breach related attacks can have long lasting consequences for the victim; thus this should be addressed post haste before it gets too out of hand.
Also, this is a good take. Say what you will about whether or not Darktide should have released in so featureless a state or if we shoulda been able to modify our heights and appearances off rip, but this is the client telling the server what’s true in a way the developers never intended. This is, potentially, a serious security exploit.
We may have opened up pandora’s box with this one and with how slow this developer is at doing anything; god knows if it’ll be fixed any time soon. No one wants a Dark Soul scenario:
the mod that gives enemies health bars is about 10000000000000 times more “cheaty” than changing your height as you would in the character customiser.
If I were to pick any mod to be banned due it being a form of cheating then it would 100% be the health bar mod, absolutely no question, and its not even a server side mod.
The difference here is, that the healthbar mod doesn’t alter server side code or commands the server to do an action. It reads out already readily available clientside information and simply makes them visible.
Here the opposite is the case. It’s the routing and flow of control that makes this mod special, not the use case itself.
There’s an API for changing the character’s height. It ‘should’ only be accessible during character creation, but apparently you can call it outside of that. It’s not raw database access.
The big question is what other APIs are exposed, and how much input validation they perform.
Same, but that’s also different. It calls what is already available to the client, namely what triggers when you’re ledge hanging or down. It just forces that perspective 24/7 and allows via off-set values for Y, X and Z coordinates to change where that camera is located.
I honestly don’t understand the problem with a mod that allows you to change the size or even the voice and name of the character.
These are changes that Fatshark should have already incorporated into the game. I know there are more pressing issues, but I’d have liked the ability to change the name of my Ogryn for example.
If mods can be used to ruin the game for other players then that’s a problem, but simple QoL options through modding is something we’ve had since mods like “Reroll Rarity”, “Buy until Rating” and “Numeric UI” to name a few.
Features that should have been there from the beginning and that modders are now adding to the game.
Me and you both know it’s an arms race with bad actors, black hats, and people with malicious intent. Next you thing you know there’ll be an exploit to inject custom code into the API to cause grief.
