They are. The other option would be that they did not expect this to happen, even though they knew at what state they released the game in and knew that they were going for a cash-grab. If they did not expect this to happen, then I’m afraid they’ve got bigger issues on their hands.
One big problem is that this is suppose to be a live service game.
Live service games have extra pressure to put out a finished game on launch because the prospect of starting playing a finished game years after its release with a small population is just not appealing for a lot of players.
No Man’s Sky or CP2077 can have their come-back stories because they can be great to start playing at any time after their release i.e. when they get fixed.
How many new long-term players can Darktide attract when (if) it gets finished in a year or two?
Again, another tides game becomes a niche product.
That is for Vermintide 2 which is… eeriely similar to how Darktide has gone so far.
I know they had the majority of people on vacation, but I just can’t believe they’ve left in things like Excise Vault being bugged to have infinite hordes for a month+ now. (It came with the mid December patch IIRC, I know it was around at least on December 16th as I have a recording of it) It makes the level a miserable slog in the long run, and considering with the f’ing stupid mission board system you’re stuck with what you get along with the fact that it loves to give me Excise Vault over and over and over and over on damnation and it gets really old, really fa- not even really fast. It’s obnoxious in general. I also just don’t particularly like that level in the first place.
Not to mention other relatively obvious and fairly major issues like the psyker peril spike bug. If you want your game to be a live service game you have to actually give live service. That doesn’t mean ignoring it for a month+ out of the year, whether or not there’s holidays. At the very least ensure your patch prior to the holiday is actually lacking major issues that can be found within 5 minutes of playing it.
I agree. They knew exactly what would happen and have just hoovered up the cash knowing it’d bomb.
I guess they’re hoping to rely on their tried and tested method of maybe possibly fixing one or two things in the next six months while rinsing fools of their money in the cash shop.
Trouble is, people like me (who’ve been playing VT2 for bloody thousands of hours) are simply not going to buy into it any more. I’m probably not going to give them money for Sienna New career or any of the cosmetics for VT2 either.
A key quote from the link Asheron posted;
The game could be revitalized if Fatshark stops making all of these questionable decisions and starts engaging the community at large like equals.
It aint that hard surely? Is it? Just tell the truth to your community? Maybe someone at FS should try it.
That’s no knightly conduct though now, is it? Fraternizing with the unwashed masses, pfah!
Ahh… for those who want to relive the drama, nothing better.
I’ve come to the same conclusion. I’m done with Darktide, I put a big check-mark behind it. I’ve got other games, and only so much time to play games, anyhow. Like many others, I’ve gone back to DRG, which is imho the best 4-player-Co-Op title made to this date, plus they did it the right way with early access and slowly building upon what they had, clearly established roadmaps and a very constant stream of content updates to this very day.
If there isn’t an update tomorrow I want the steam rating to hit mostly negative. I need it.
The real darktide endgame content
There should be an achievement and a premium cosmetic.
If Magnuson wasn’t lying then that means he expected Darktide to crash and burn even faster xD
Like “I’m just happy anyone still plays this garbage! ”
I haven’t played the game for about 3 weeks, I just got sick and tired of the garbage progression system, it’s one of the worst I’ve ever seen, layers upon layers upon layers of RNG.
Then there’s also the technical issues that the game suffers from. See pox hounds for a perfect example of this.
The weapon/class balance is all over the place, which to be fair many games suffer from this at release. I hope it gets better soon.
Content is nothing compared to Vermintide 2, VT2 had much more content and more interesting content at launch, like the maps in VT2 felt unique, but the maps in DT while well made are not very distinct, it’s just all concrete and metal, it all kind of blends together in the end. Only the outdoor sand maps were somewhat unique, the rest all felt samey, not to mention the game only truly has 5 maps, not 13 like VT2. So that’s a big downgrade.
We’re missing alternate careers entirely and some of the ones we got feel rushed and incomplete, only Veteran and maybe Zealot feel fleshed out correctly, the other 2 have many issues (one of Ogryns talents doesn’t even work lol).
Darktides story is so lazily put together, they pretty much copy pasted Amongus for the story lmao. At least VT2 had an interesting story line and you’d find out stuff about your characters and their personalities while you played missions or when they spoke in the keep. Darktide kind of has that, but not as good as VT2 imo.
Anyway, I think the game has potential to be good like Vermintide 2, but that’s not going to happen overnight, it’ll probably take at least a year to get into a more polished state. I hope they don’t get greedy and try to charge us for stuff that should of been in the game at launch, like more classes, bosses, maps etc. All the gameplay additions for the game should be free for the first couple of years to try and make up for the game being a mess.
Just a point re: making genres … 4 player co-op action titles go back to 4-player arcade cabinets with games like Golden Axe and Gauntlet. This is just the 3D evolution of that, which was really popularized by L4D. But to their credit, they are acknowledging the desire for more of these kinds of games - regardless of setting/IP.
Since u like data…
-SteamDB calculates that vermintide 2 purchases sit at 2.65- 6.35 million
-It calculates that darktide is sitting at 1.3-3.5 million.
Release dates
-Vermintide 2 released in 2018
-Darktide released a few months ago.
Players online. Currently:
VT2 sitting at 5k peaking at 10k at most during the month.
Darktide sitting at 11k, peaking at 20k during the month.
Considering the review bombing since release, the fact that more people are playing/buying it than the legendary vermintide has to say something about the game. Also that the game is sitting at 50% of sales that Vermintide 2 has achieved in it’s lifetime is also a really good number.
Of the 50k reviews on steam 95ish percent of them start " I vermintide Vet DER DER so many hours DER DER, i part of community made game great DER DER, u no listen to me so I review bad DER DER DER.
It’s more likely that a small percentage of entitled vermintide players found likeminded people to continue hating on Darktide, out of some misguided sense of entitlement and belonging to the “community”.
People that enjoy something don’t really bother going to forums, or reviewing, why because it requires effort, effort that only people that have issues with the game are really willing to make.
I
I think the futuristic 40k aesthetic and the more FPS-like gameplay is just more appealing for the majority of casual gamers than the fantasy kinda medival style and melee focused combat of Vermintide.
Also there are alot more bigger youtubers making content about Darktide now than about Vermintide back then… The advertising is at a much larger scale for Darktide and so is the hype.
But all of that doesn’t make it a better game.
That logic doesn’t make sense since the game is at a 45% rating, so it can’t be a “minority of vermintide vets” downvoting the game.
The game is in a poor state from technical, design and content standpoints. so it’s no wonder it has a mixed review score to match its current state.
Those are some hot takes.
Let’s go through them:

The game is 5 years old. That’s why there are fewer people playing. Darktide is benefitting not only from old tide players, but also from new players.

The setting is more appealing, more people are into 40k. It is admittedly a fun core gameplay, there’s no disputing that.

This was your conclusion, which you insinuated had data-driven arguments. My goodness man, all of your post was just a strange opinion.
EDIT: I must say starting off your post with “Since u like data” and then using no data as an argument in the rest of the post is a stroke of comedic genius.
Help me understand the meaning of the word “more” in this sentence please.
That’s a whole lot of pointless conjecture. Darktide has poor reviews because it has a lot of problems. That’s it, there is no more to the story.
So why are some games rated overwhelmingly positive then?
