The Rolling Steel Minigame is too damn long

In my humble opinion the minigame is far too long in duration and tedious in operation for what is otherwise a thrillingly paced mission, completely halting momentum while I literally twiddle my fingers in anticipation of being able to play the game again.

Exhibit A:

Compare it to what I affectionately call “the gameboy” – that reaction-based hacking simulator which according to Hadron is entirely luck-based :sob:

Exhibit B:

  • skill-based element
  • anticipation of next input
  • brief, exciting operation
  • didn’t even have to compress the file to upload it to this forum

I’m beggin’ ya Fat Shark, please change this.

Yes it’s too long 100%.

I believe the speed should increase the longer you avoid the sides. If you touch the sides then the speed resets to slowest again and it begins speeding up until the sides are hit again.

That way it makes it a quicker game and also rewards skill

Not mines obviously… lol
I suck with this minigame… but I did not test intensively, I have given up the new mission as it is impossible to do with randoms that don’t know what they have to do.
And after 8 tries, I decided to move to something else. Darktide is too much punishing to spend my time at trying to succeed the mission one time.

You need to avoid tapping the keys too hard, how much the circle will push and wig around is based entirely on how hard you’re pressing keys/a control stick. But yeah they should lop 10 seconds off the mini game.

I can’t see how I can press softly a touch on my mechanical keyboard.
I suspect this minigame done for a controller. But on a mechanical keyboard, a touch has 2 states. Pressed, or not. Softly pressed does not exists.

The moment it’s skill based everyone on PC will install mod for centering it, idk how Fatshark can fix this.

And the software acknowledges how hard you depress those keys, this can easily be done on a keyboard. If you keep that earlier function of this mini game in mind. I should make a clip of me doing half moon slides right off the edge of the circle with a close up of my left hand…100% keyboard. Gotta do something to keep the mini game itself interesting.

I think these both games should be overhauled, they can be easily modded out. They should do something like Flappybird or Chrome’s Dino jumping minigame. I personally think they should do these unskippable. I am not saying they should ban mods, but they should make sure this stays as a mechanic and not a console player tax.

I take… this mini game is annoying.

I try this evening (in a solo…)… I am really skeptical about that

I have just searched, it is called pressure sensitive keyboard, and it doesn’t seem like a generic feature.

I just quote this from Keychron (I have one)

As opposed to traditional mechanical switches, magnetic switches use pressure -sensitive hall effect sensors to detect keypresses

(sidenote: and I doubt it is linked to the pressure sensitivity feature, but more the way how magnetic switches work, but at work, I cannot open the page)
And no, I don’t use magnetic switches. I use traditionnal switches, durock ones.

I think he’s pulling your leg mate.

You can code the game around how long a key is held for, but not how hard it is pressed. None of the keyboards I’ve ever owned have any technology for monitoring how hard the button is pressed.

And there is such option in darktide???
we don’t even have the option to keep running when you press one time the key for it… (every time you get hit you return walking). I don’t think I have seen such feature… and I begin to be tired to have to rely on mods and ahk to just be able to play the game…

From what I saw, you press forward, then press backward etc… to try to let it on the middle. I am pretty sure it is easily done with a controller and harder with a keyboard…

I thought it was more full depress vs partial depress. Like that whole ‘0.5 A button press’ rabbit hole you could choose to go down (don’t). I literally had the same issue with this game, had someone tell me to tap the keys and not hold them down and it worked. The thing barely moves if you just sit there doing taps on the keys, but if you’re holding it down it goes hard.

Here’s a protip for the minigame. Tap the direction you want the ball to go in quickly and repeatedly instead of holding the key. Was no longer bashing wall to wall once I started doing this.

We have to complete 3 of these which optimistically mean 1:30 (if not interrupted) from the what, 10 minute timeframe? That’s less than 1/5th of the total time required.
People just have to realize that they have to play for the objectives instead of hanging around with their weeners in their hands.

Agree, this minigame is ass, and way too long.

3kliksphilip made a really neat video about this technology, actually!

That’s because small taps only register for so long compared to full presses.

I’ve given up on the train mission for now too. Hopefully they extend the timers and reduce minigame duration soon and I’ll retry.

Besides the Moebian hordes are way too fun so I’m exclusively playing those conditions incase they disappear after the event is over. I truly hope they keep them in the game as a normal condition though!

Disagree, let the people mod! One because they always will, and two because it’s preferable to introduce a gameplay feature that doesn’t actively encourage people to avoid it…

While partial-press keyboards do exist (albeit not exactly commonplace) it would be interesting to see if they did in fact register in Darktide… you’d think so, but at least I would expect it to occur organically rather than tied to a menu option.

I’d also think that the game would be designed more with keyboard in mind – you can see my big Ogryn thumb going ham on the device as I spam inputs. Not great!

That was exactly my point actually:
