The reason why ranged combat doesn't work in this game

Gamers are just too toxic and competitive, even in a co - op PVE game. You can’t make some classes have to be responsible for friendly fire but not others and expect a bunch of strangers to get along. I literally tell people “watch out I’m going to shoot that patrol with my trollhammer” and they just RUN right to the patrol. I always call out in voice chat before I use ranged weapons but they ALWAYS run in front of it, and then it’s ALWAYS my fault. The problem with friendly fire only being on ranged weapons is that melee classes despise ranged classes and just prefer playing all melee.

I literally ask people for a chance to kill stuff and they just tell me no. Why would they want me to get kills. They want to get the green circles. They say “I’m a melee class, I have to melee stuff. Why should I move out of the way for you?”. I am considerate and just never use my weapons and ask when is a good time to use it. They say there really is no good time, I should just use other weapons or play another class.

The solution is to add friendly fire to melee damage or remove it from ranged. Otherwise it will always be this boring stale meta of grail knights and warrior priests on the front line. Why would you EVER take something more than a merc with a handgun, when it’s handicapping your team to go BH with a volley crossbow, or a waystalker with a hagbane. It’s completely pointless because the only thing you need to do is occasionally shoot a special, melee literally does everything else objectively better with no risk to the team.

My entire experience playing engineer at cataclysm has been a negative one. I basically have to just play legend library runs with bots, because I don’t know any people who play this game so I just do random quickmatch. And half of these games I either get vote kicked for friendly fire, or I just don’t use my weapons at all because the melee classes are purposefully body blocking me to deny me kills so that they can have more on the scoreboard. The way engineer is designed is that your teammates have to be aware of your positioning and theirs relative to you. Nobody is aware of sh*t, most grail knights are smoking a blunt in 1 hand and furiously left clicking with the other.

Melee friendly fire would be fine. It works in mordhau and that has narrow corridors and 80 + players in a map. Deep rock galactic has friendly fire but only guns. Vermintide has friedly fire on guns but not melee? No wonder everybody plays melee classes. Why would you want to be the only person on your team that can be responsible for team damage. You will ALWAYS be the scapegoat. You will always be blamed when things go south. In a community of angry gamers, you need equal responsibilty on all parties. When you fail the run what is the first thing people think of? That one time they took friendly fire damage because they cluelessly or intentionally ran in front of your line of sight while greeding kills.

If they get hit by your trollhammer after you’ve called it I think it’s their problem, not yours.

I think this “pursuit of green circles” is not the case, if they’re playing a melee only class then melee is their only option. I think it’d be a little inconsiderate for you to expect them to just leave enemies for you to shoot, there is no bonus for getting kills aside from the green circles which at the end of the day mean nothing.

I can’t even think about how to word how wrong this is, how anti-fun and unplayable the game would be with this implimentation.

I don’t think these classes are handicaps, especially when used in the right team, especially a team that has 1 or more melee only classes. As a ranged-focused class your role would be to take out the specials and other major threats with the ranged strength of your class.

I can almost assure you with 100% certainty that they are not purposely blocking you to deny you kills, they’re playing melee classes which involves them being in melee range of enemies. Again, the green circles on the scoreboard don’t mean anything significant, though people seem to think otherwise.

I can’t make the comparison with Mordhau as I haven’t played it since it’s PVP. DRG however I have played and as you’ve stated only has FF on guns, imagine if you could FF with your pickaxe and how annoying it would be to have multiple people digging through the same terrain. As far as being blamed when things go south, what about the slayers that jump into patrols? GKs and WPs that can’t save other players from specials from a distance? Then getting caught themselves due to not being about to deal with specials from ranged? Melee only classes are just as likely to be blamed for a loss as much as any other class. Unless someone is doing repetitive FF on purpose there would be no reason to blame someone for a loss just for playing a ranged class.

I’m sorry you’ve had bad experiences with other players but blaming melee classes and suggesting that they only play them to interfere or limit ranged classes playstyle or to avoid FF is just not true in most circumstances. I myself love to play melee classes because this game has the best first-person melee combat of any PVE game. Most of the time I’m forced into playing other classes with ranged due to my friends not being great special snipers so I very rarely get to play them anyway. I know I’ll probably get a negative response from you or you’ll take offense to this in some way but that’s not my intention, I just hope that maybe going forward you’re able to have better experiences with other players. Best of luck dawri!

But it’s my fault, and i’m the one who gets reprimanded or kicked

It wouldn’t be unplayable at all, it would have a higher skill cap and be more difficult but ultimately still a pretty easy game. Melee players would just have to be considerate as well.

But there are literally never enemies to shoot, they are always running ahead full steam. AS soon as the enemy appears they are on it.

So basically you’re agreeing with me that it is a valid gameplay issue. I have to be considerate about the fact they are melee, but they don’t have to be considerate about the fact that I am ranged. I have to think about their positioning, but they don’t have to think about mine. This does NOT work on the internet because most people are not considerate. It’s unreasonble to expect one person to be but not the other.

Sounds like you’re biased and play melee classes. This is how every person thinks. Why be troubled with thinking about someone else when you are having fun playing the game. It’s an inconvenience to have an engineer on your team when you want to just melee stuff and not think about it.

If you don’t see my point of view try playing your next 100 games only as engineer and see how it goes. But you probably play the meta. This is why I never bother wasting my time on forums, nothing is going to change. Everyone agrees with the meta and like it, that’s why they play the game. I don’t like it so I’m just not going to play this game anymore.

I find when I play OE I mostly use the crank gun when dealing with monsters or bosses and don’t really use it for much else. Even then I find using the masterwork pistol to be just as effective if not more so.

I think I’m gonna leave it with that as I’ve just trailed through the mess of a post that was made about “fixing OE” and I’m not about to join in on what is essentially is a pointless conversation. Again, best of luck dawri.

Yeah on cata I don’t really play the game bc they have all the bases covered anyway. When we get to the boss I can use my crank gun, if there’s no grail knight and kerillian who one shots it first.

It’s always easy to ask other people to be considerate when you don’t have to be considerate yourself. And that’s my point with this game. Most people are not very good at empathy. Gamers are notoriously bad for having pitiful social skills and being inconsiderate in general. It’s just not fun getting kicked from games because my class requires other people to desire to play around me.

But whatever I’m pretty much bored of gaming anyway. Starting to realize every video game sucks and is a waste of my time. Idk why I even post on this forums as if anything would change. I’ve never in my life felt I posted on a forum and even once got a satisfying response. Most people seem to just come here for the purpose of telling me how skilled they are.

I understand your pain as I often play as Engineer, but I also play Grail Knight a good bit too and I enjoy the melee mechanics more. I try to stay out of the way of ranged players, clear space for them, and keep to the side of a narrow passage or corridor when fighting. Dealing with quick-play people can be frustrating, but I’ve learned to cope over time.

Also, bear in mind that not everyone playing melee is always going to be capable of being fully aware all the time. Some people haven’t even played long enough to be cognizant of what’s going on with enemies and specials, let alone where you are and what you’re shooting at.

The game is much more enjoyable when playing with a group of people you know and chat with. I was fortunate to be invited to a discord server where friendly players gather to play Vermintide 2, and I even invited some friends from my previous job to join. Now, there are about 5 of us who play semi-regularly, and it’s a lot more fun that way.

I recommend finding a group to play with. The first friendly player you come across, you can start a discord server and invite them to join, or ask to join the server they play on. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded players and avoid the toxicity of quick-play.

However, I also don’t particularly enjoy the friendly fire mechanic in this game; even when playing with friends or in quick play, having adapted to fragile gamer personalities. While some might argue that FF can add a challenging element, not everything challenging is fun. Sometimes, despite our best efforts, friendly fire happens, especially when someone runs in front of you while you’re firing. It can rub salt in someone’s wounded ego when they’re already having a rough day and just want to play a semi-social game, which can make quick-play more toxic. I think Fatshark should probably just remove friendly fire altogether or at least let hosts decide to have it on or off. Until then, just have to have a thick skin and some players will have to deal with getting shot in the back if they continuously put themselves between my crank gun’s wave of bullets and the enemy. If you get kicked, you get kicked, don’t sweat it.

@JBles95
Darktide doesn’t have friendly fire now, I don’t think VT2 should either. There are so many talents and weapons that do AOE; some with piercing, DOT, or ricochet. It’s incredibly frustrating when you’re in quick play and players have to work around that and for ranged players using those weapons and talents to work around their allies. For humorous effect, they could keep the FF voice lines, but use them more sparingly.

Yeah this definitely is a gameplay issue but not with the melee classes. Now don’t get me wrong, I feel you even though I play mostly melee classes myself, but this game is melee focused by design and it’s no fun to play around one person’s choice neither and kinda inconsiderate in itself.

Still, you shouldn’t get kicked for that and I personally don’t care about FF unless its super obvious it’s on purpose griefing and not going to stop.
All in all it’s mostly just A-holes in the game issue.

You should hate ranged classes on principle then, no? :stuck_out_tongue:

This is less a ranged thing in general problem and more an engineer specific thing, because the poor dwarf is slow. Any other ranged specialist like say elf or wizard will not just be keeping up with their team, they are notorious for running miles ahead instead. While also sweeping at least half the hostile population as they go.

Other half is claimed by the griffonfoot bounty once he gets in range.

As for melee FF, mordharu was designed to be different and VT2 wont be getting any major overhauls at this point. Melee would break entirely if it was just slapped on without very, very careful tuning and fixing on other fronts as well.

Yeah. Can’t shoot over people as easily. Compounded by the fact that you can’t really jump and shoot with the crank gun anyway.
