That’s it, that’s the message. Very good work.
I still cannot easily tell what for I got my rewards like frames, or other cosmetics.
There’s a mod for this… but we should never have to point the existence of a mod for something that should be in the base game…
Tbf Fatshark cannot think about everything, also they are historically pretty bad with User Experience stuff and UI. Mods like CustomUI, numericUI, extended blessing description, and so many other UI improvements should be regularly reviewed by Fatshark and added to the base game as theree is a clear demand for clearer UI, game info and UI customisation.
exactly this, which i why i wondered about OP. not that the graphics are bad, it’s just that there’s not much visual difference between done and not done penances. should be something with a much better contrast.
The penance UI leaves a lot to be desired IMHO. The mod Archivum Mellisina (spelling?) adds the ability to filter based on completed, yet-to-complete, and all penances - and it’s stuff like this that makes you realize the UIs Fatshark makes is about 50% of what they should be.
Enhanced Blessing description is a godsend for understanding what stuff actually does. Both expanded tooltips and actually accurate & complete descriptions. It’s amazing how much stuff looks better or worse than it is because the standard descriptions are awful.
So many other UI improvements in mods, just even those out of combat, make the game so much better. The UI has a ways to go.
it took exactly 2 replies for this “good work on the UI!” thread to have a post saying “there’s a mod that fixes this”
If you go to the Penances tab instead of the Highlights tab when you complete a penance, you see the reward.
If you go to a cosmetic, you see what penance you received it from and if you have not unlocked it yet you see what you need to do to unlock it.
Now, it would be icing on the cake if you could click on it and it took you to the penance but that’s not really necessary.
You only see a little preview icon of the reward. You can’t actually check what it is. Obviously that one is a weapon trinket (not necessarily obvious either actually, one might think it’s an insignia) but good luck figuring out what title the penance awarded or will award you based on a jpg of dogtags. You have to go into a different menu for that (if you even realize the dogtags are meant to signify a title) and check through all the titles there.
It’s pretty objectively speaking badly designed, but it’s achievement unlocks so it’s not really a big deal
Trinkets have the keychain part at the top of the image, Insignias don’t.
Is there room for improvements? Yes, there always is. Being able to see a larger image of the item when hovering over the image would be an improvement. Like you can with Hestia’s Blessings items.
And yes I agree that the UI for the titles in the Penances tab is bad but it’s not “objectively speaking badly designed” UI in the Penance tab. Unless “objectively” in this case means your opinion.
When you can’t find out what you get as a reward unless you already know what it is and menu into the appropriate menu, it’s badly designed and it’s not a matter of opinion!
Another objective shortcoming is that once you “turned in” a penance, it disappears in the huge list of penances and there’s no way to see what you just completed, too. So if you fatfinger or otherwise miss what penance you just turned in and what reward you just got you can now sift through all the shiny circles in your cosmetics screen (which also tend to get stuck) and make your best guess. This one has annoyed me a couple times.
What’s subjective is how much it bothers someone. It doesn’t bother me much, it’s barely consequential cause it’s just penances. My opinion on it is that it doesn’t deserve applause, but it’s mostly functional and it does look alright. They coulda done way worse on it, considering some of the other UIs
Playing through on a fresh account has made me appreciate the penance system even more. You consistently progress on the track and have things to claim after almost every match. And I love the sticker book feel!
What do you exactly mean?
Are you talking about new players? Then sure it will be hard for them to see what they are looking at, but that’s the case when you see something for the first time. When you learn that Insignias look one way and Trinkets look one way it’s easy to spot.
Are you saying that you personally can’t see a difference between Trinkets, Insignias, Frames, Accessories, Stances, Emotes or body cosmetics in the preview window?
Is that good design or bad design? Keep in mind the preview is there to show you what you get.
I’ve always been annoyed that some items you get, like curios, have a description that you see when you acquire them from penances. But after that, it’s impossible to go back and see the description even though I know that it exists.
So unless everyone instantly knows what they are looking at the first time they see it, it’s bad design?
What you quoted was in the context of a new player and a new player will not know about Insignias and Trinkets, so of course they will not know what they are looking at the first time.
Yes.
Even if you know what a title is, it’s not even obvious that the thing is represented by a jpg of dogtags. Even if you never did a penance before, the rewards section should tell you what you get as a reward properly. Also, if you’re looking through your penances to find out which title you got from which penance, that’s not happening. You have to go into a different menu.
Listen dude I’m not saying it’s really annoying or something but you can’t just sweep bad design away like it doesn’t exist just because you personally don’t mind it anymore.
Chief, being able to identify at first glance what something is, is the definition of good design.
Then there is no such thing as good design because everyone can understand everything they see for the first time.
