Thanks for followup Hedge. Sorry to be so bitter; was extremely disappointed when I saw this on the surge staff and hope they remove this soon. actually gave me nausea.
See this is my problem with every game. Why is it always unreasonable for every change to be tested?
They made changes, it should be seen how those changes work.
I am a bit flabbergasted at how many points of failure it got through to get to this point.
- The concept was pitched and approved (and I know the pitch wouldn’t have been “it’ll be cool if we induce double/triple vision blurring and uncontrollable camera motion while charging a staff that can flash bright lights/effects”… right?)
- An artist had to have made it and I assumed applied it to the game to see how it looks.
- A programmer implemented it (camera shake, etc.).
- A supervisor/manager looked at it and approved it.
- A tester/QA ran the weapon because it was a change and reported how it looked and what effect it may have had with them.
- If reported, then someone ignored the report or put it as lower priority despite the effect having actual physiologically effects on people.
- Then it got pushed to live.
I too rarely get motion sickness but this staff made my eyes so, so tired just playing one game. Again, how did it get to this point?
This new VFX for the Surge Staff made my eyes sore after a single mission, and they remained feeling weird for like an hour afterwards.
I simply cannot play the game like this.
While I am willing to sacrifice the tendons in my wrists and fingers for the Emperor, I am not willing to risk my eyesight.
i like the effect. Its just personal preferences. Maybe there is a way to tone down the effect in the game setting.
How the heck did this even past QA…
On a more constructive note, one of the problems is the intensity of the flashing light when charging or releasing the lightning, but that could be mitigated be making it flash from full to half or 3/4s intensity instead of nothing because the lightning particle is constant. It would only do full on-off flashes if the lightning bolts are fired atomically (next one comes out only after the previous one ends) . That way it won’t be such a bright flashing but you still get the changing light levels the change seems to be going for.
Have some options if at all possible.
New visuals are great but the blur is a bit too much and just detrimental to see what is happening.
But I can live with this lively lightning.
Having some options to tune down some vfx would be great.
For example the void staff effects should be less for the people in melee really.
I know you guys are putting out fires all over the place, but this is a health issue.
We had one psyker in our group using the surge staff, and three of us have now got migraines or headaches after a single map, just from the 3rd party flashing and screen effects. Personally I’m feeling nauseous because of it.
Please, please can this be a priority to be patched out, it’s making the surge staff unplayable not just for the psykers but for people playing alongside them.
[Edit]: The effect of this is magnified when the psyker is on a metallic or multi-faceted surface like a grate, stairs or metal flooring, because it reflects off of EVERYTHING in the area.
We warned our Psyker player before deploying, he tested it in the training area, felt alright, and we figured, well, okay.
We didn’t realise that it’s like playing with a miniature ambulance.
Also if you end up behind this, the blurred screen distortion applies to you as well.
We recorded, finished, and I have the pain behind my eye that I recognise as a migraine sign, and I’ll be chilling away from screens for the afternoon to mitigate it
Sorry, mute this before playing:
.
In defence of the Fatshark QA, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of the people testing this already have constant headaches and sore eyes from working overtime for months. It might explain how nobody noticed. So more of a failure in routines when it comes to specifically seizure/headache inducing VFX I guess.
That said, I hope this can be solved fast, instead of waiting a week. I might have to only play private matches until it is solved, to avoid getting surge psykers on my team… It is a fragging cool effect though, so for the people who can stand to look at it, it should be a setting to toggle it.
+1 for having issues with the new VFX.
I’m not typically photosensitive, although motion-blur in games sometimes makes me feel sick (I’ve got this toggled off), however after a single game, I’m feeling nauseous and getting a headache. It’s ended my play-session for the next few hours
Edit: For clarification, for me, the issue is the “water ripple” effect and the blurring. It makes me motion-sick.
As shown here Surge Staff New Visual is Seizure Inducing - #27 by mcc31193
With countless reports of this making people feel extremely motion sick, extremely sore eyes, or triggering epilepsy badly, I’m interested in seeing how quickly this gets fixed since it’s an actual health issue.
While you’re at it please roll back Force Sword VFX changes so I can see what’s in front of me.
Wow, they just butchered this class this patch. The power effects are so annoying in this game. Can’t see while blocking really sucks as well.
I have no seizure issues, but specifically the blur and wobble it cause is hard to look at in these videos for me as well.
It’s a cool looking effect, the lightning in particular looks better, so the VFX is on good track, and the enemy highlighting when targeted looks good.
I think that is the issue here. Someone was designing a cool effect. It definitely does look cool in an animation, but when you apply it in a gameplay situation where someone needs agency and the ability to see properly, these intense effects end up making people sick.
It’s also something that impacts other players if they’re standing behind the psyker. So it’s not just the flashing, the whole effect is causing issues for psykers and some non psyker players.
I’m disappointed they didn’t roll this back before the weekend. Miss being able to use the staff or be in a match with another psyker with the staff.
Played with this staff for the first time today after making a psyker… Had to quit my game after a single use of it. Not photosensitve or prone to motion sickness at all, but it immediately made me nauseous and gave me a headache. Had to quit right away.
Even watching a few of the video clips above causes it again almost instantly.
Came to the forum to post about it and sure enough, it’s not just me. This needs to be fixed ASAP.
