Social System Rework

Darktide is gradually becoming better and better. Theres a lot to be said about the bad of the game but honestly theres also a lot of good that has come out of the last few patches. The most recent rework of three of the classes has been amazing and even though havoc has some problems i have been enjoying it since it was released as well.

One of the aspects of the game that i feel doesnt get talked about enough is the social system and thats mostly because there have been much bigger, fatter, fish to fry which is fair.

What we have now:

  • friends list
  • steam first list (presumably there something for consoles in the place of this)
  • previous missions list
  • the Mourningstar list
  • invites
  • block
  • Mourningstar chat
  • strike team chat
  • find player function via Fatshark Friend Code

These are decent and while barebones it genuinely does most of what the game needs.

There are two functions that i think would create a much better environment for the community as a whole

  • guilds/ guild chat

We need a way to send out a bulletin style message to many people, such that it is something they opt into and can chat in as well. Its a simple mmo style guild and guild channel system that exists across many games. This functionality alone creates and sustains communities.

  • direct messaging

We need a way to directly ask someone to group instead of dry firing an invite. If i had to choose between guilds/ guild chat OR direct messaging. I would take direct messaging. I just want to friend a ton of people and ask them if they want to group, thats it.

I think its time FatShark spends some time to update the social system, (if they arent already O:) There are even off the shelf options like discords SDK which would be integrated right into the game, it might be well past the opportunity for something like that but im sure there are many other options that could do the job just as well or better.

One tiny change that would have a pretty big effect would be to flip the strike team to be opt-out rather than opt-in. Stay with your team for a few games, maybe you do really mesh well together, and if you don’t mesh you can always leave. The one and done nature of opt-in strike teams kinda kills the social cohesion of the game, within the game.

Yeah, I suppose that’s interesting having a direct line of private communication to somebody you just played with. Instead of random invites, then you have to talk only after they accept, because those invites can be annoying when they pop-up. Because there were times where I really wanted to talk to somebody sending a private direct message after a mission, instead of a random friend’s requests/invites. It does feel more personal, I suppose, if there’s a connection. The only thing I still don’t agree with from that list is the block feature isn’t long enough still. I hate the cap they’ve applied to it… They need to remove it.

I had fun reading this post, really fun.
Listing the game’s advantages is the friends list, the list of participants from previous missions, and those in the hub, and the funniest thing is the CHAT. These are the basic things for similar games. You’re either new to games, or you need so little to be happy that I’m even jealous.

The block list is limited. Maybe they fixed it in the latest hotfix, but it’s pretty funny. If for some reason you don’t want to see someone, you can add a limited number of people to it. They could have introduced a paid feature to increase the limit by +5 people for 500 Aquila—that would have been just like Sharks.

Chat—you probably don’t know or haven’t encountered it when you’re in a group but can’t switch to the group chat, only the hub chat. Or, during a mission, the group chat becomes inactive, just like voice chat, and only a game restart fixes it. Chat is definitely a really cool feature of the game. You want guild chat, but there’s a problem. We’re under a specific Inquisitor (oh my god, I’m talking about the storyline), and I’m not sure, but in this particular case, creating guilds, much less a chat, would be a bit inappropriate (did you read the issues above?). Adding a private chat would be fine, but a guild chat is a bit inappropriate. And even if they did add it, how many things would be broken in parallel?

You’re citing MMO games as an example, but you know, in those games, people are usually allowed to at least see their results: who dealt how much damage, how many deaths, and the server leaderboard. I have a question: how can this be done without resorting to MODs in this game?

You’re talking about QoL items, but we don’t have the ability to see our ping during missions. What are you talking about?

I could go on, but I won’t. It’s always jarring to me when someone says the game is currently in good shape. The game should have looked like this a year later, not at the start of 4. Instead of adequate answers, we get “soon,” and when we ask awkwardly, “not so soon,” it’s like I’m talking clowns, not to company representatives.

i agree, it ought to be pretty easy to implement and would definitely add more player interaction in non-party find.

in havoc that happens and there is still a lot of friction to try and play with that person post session. with at least direct player to player communication you would be able to check in with each friend at least.

Yet another better system that already existed in VT2, how ‘bout that.
