Server authoritative gameplay problems

Issue Type (Required):

Other

Issue Description (Required):

Darktide has an issue in which all player inputs and gameplay has to be determined by the dedicated server.

For example actions such as moving, attacking, blocking, special activation, dodging, sprinting, swapping, scanning, reviving, interacting, crouching, sliding, jumping, ability use, tagging, applying stimms, deploying items and giving items are all player actions that the server can and will undo during gameplay. Resulting in jittery gameplay, inputs that are undone or get stuck, hit registration problems, animations being skipped or undone, getting hit by attacks you dodged or blocked, interaction bars that have been completed being undone, being unable to give items or stimms to your teammates, weapon swaps getting botched or undone, projectiles being thrown or shot where you were previously aiming or not even aiming at all, using your ability and everyone hearing the voice line but the ability wasn’t actually used, trying to move around but the server teleports you back, throwing or deploying items and the server undoing that action and more. It’s a constant problem that is present everywhere in gameplay and haunts Darktide. It results in a gameplay experience that feels very weird, and at times very terrible to play. It makes playing with others across regions feel terrible. This is not how a multiplayer game should feel.
I have made a post further detailing what I think on it here:

Steps to Reproduce (Required):

  • Play the game, more likely to happen with higher ping

Common (<50%)

PC - Steam

Thank you for making a comprehensive post about this, can’t +1 it enough. Something about the way Darktide’s netcode works has to change, because right now on wi-fi with enough packet loss I can’t play it.

Thanks a lot for bumping this issue to the forefront again ; every action is so network-dependant I’ve given up trying to play on Wi-fi and always use Ethernet for better stability, even if it’s less convenient.

even without packet loss at Ethernet i’ve still ran into similar stuff not as frequently however

This issue is my biggest gripe with Darktide

I’ve been collecting a little bit of extra evidence of the issue to showcase this issue still exists
I’ll also put these into the main post for easy finding

Server authoritative is how video games like this have to be programmed. Do you understand what happens if the server doesn’t have final say in whether an action is actually going through?

The game would be literally unplayable because everyone’s clients would disagree with the gamestate and try to enforce their will upon the world. Not to mention the sheer variety of disruptive cheats that would be enabled by such a client-authoritative system.

What you are asking for is better client prediction.

Vermintide 2 exists but ok.

Though I would like it if VT2’s player defensive mechanics weren’t also tied to latency.

Here’s my personal addition to this clip compilation. Could probably find more later if I feel like it.

Missing hits on ranged weapons?

Since the patch on Monday, it feels like there’s a ~10% chance that my ranged weapons do not do damage. It’s very noticeable with high damage weapons like the double barrel shotgun or the revolver. Has anyone else noticed this? I feel like I’m going crazy. I was having a blast on hive scum but when it (sometimes) takes 3 shots with my shotgun to kill a scab shotgunner from 5ft away, something is wrong.

Yeah, my game feels sluggish as well since the last hotfix. Missing hits, misssing blocks, and so on.

I’ve noticed a lot of little things since the latest hotfix. Lagging and missing bullets is the most common. It happens with force staves too, and their projectiles are very visible so it’s immediately noticeable when absolutely nothing gets shot out

Lines up with my experience since 1.10.2

Unfortunately it’s an issue with the game ever since launch (and before that). Just that how bad the issue is fluctuates between game updates or on the game server just not feeling like it today.

There was a beautiful 3 week period after patch 13 where the game & the server responsiveness was at its best and it was the closest Darktide’s ever gotten to perfect.

I’ve never had the amount of issues currently present before 1.10.2.
There’s plenty I complain about external to a mission, but playing the game was never a problem. Currently, I am flipping a coin when I start the game and it rarely lands on the “this will be a functional and not frustrating time” side.

Feels pretty good to know that it isn’t just my own experience. Hopefully there is something they can do about this and that they choose to do something or just make it a “deal with it” thing.

I do not have any ideas, but I sure am tired of this kind of experience

Already made a post about this 2022: Client/ Server Authoritative Networking

But they haven’t responded to this and probably can’t refactor something this deep in the game.

Lets hope, they will implement it correctly in Darktide 2, if enough people complain.

unironically this issue makes the game unplayable for me

gonna post a recent experience here as well, though it wasn’t limited to darktide alone it sure had the most impact.

ever so briefly all of my mice (stocked up on g305 when they were cheap) and new sensors on different USB ports with no power saving enabled on em, act out to the point of not turning further a past a certain degree when making twitch swings on a charged pickaxe attack as ogryn or what feels like a mid movement reduction of sensitivity when using the shivs on scum.

after a second or two, these issues vanish and may not come back during the same match, but it aint trust inducing when getting caught with your pants down fighting 12 ragers simultaneously.

latest chipset drivers for mainboard etc.

trigger so speak was a gpu driver crash nvmdll-etc after which I installed the latest one (crash according to windows events history happened rarely, 3x last year to be exact, so faulty hardware id rule out)

after the subsequent update these problems seemed more pronounced, a rollback with ddu proved a bit of a remedy but not 100%

so what really is the culprit here, I got not clue about :man_shrugging:

I think where this games netcode really gets wacky is when you play with people outside of your region. I played a particularly bad game (I’m from Denmark so only play on the european servers) with a group of people who informed me during the game (when I was complaining about latency) that they were all from north america. I have a mod that shows ping, and sure enough my ping was worse than usual, though not by much (typicall it’s in the 30-50 range, and in this game it was in the 70-100 range). Note that I did not connect to a US server. They were the ones who came to play on EU servers.

This made me wonder to what extend the terrible latency you some times get in this game is a product of where your team mates connect from? That the issue is not JUST your ping to the server you connect to, but some sort of syncing-related crap. If one or more team-mates connect from a distant region, it affects everyone? Now the server gets really wacky because everyone’s inputs must be synced to one or more distant players?

The problem is I have no easy way to test this because I can’t see where other players are from.

I played a perfect game yesterday. Ping was in a stable 35-40 range and everything felt smooth and responsive. Why are there such massive differences in experience between one game and the other when I am ostensibly connected to the same european server, or at least servers within the same narrow ping range?

I want this game to tell me more about where I am connected to specifically, and where the people I play with are connecting from so I can at least understand what is going on and see if there are any patterns to it.
