DX12 performance on linux drivers. Gone a long way, but a very long way to go. Nvidia linux driver release cycle very slow, talking months. Windows is almost every month and many hotfixes.
AMD. Go for Linux, give it go as worth it. Don’t dual boot same drive, separate drive as sometimes windows update has history of messing with bootloader affecting the Linux partition. Some games run better, some worse. But AMD shows more consistency than Nvidia when it comes windows vs linux.
Whether Nvidia or AMD - Keep windows as secondary OS and not nuke to go full Linux. Anti-cheat, won’t work in Linux in some games. Apex Legends, Tarkov, Rainbow six, Battlefield 6 etc You never know there might be such games you want to play in future, even if you’re not interested in the ones now.
There are people that choose Linux with Nvidia and accept the performance loss range from 15-20% in certain games. That’s because they want the privacy, freedom and less bloated OS experience, or maybe they want to do other AI/simulation/CUDA stuff that benefits in Linux. But 15-20%, that’s like a whole GPU tier.
I don’t think Linux is ever going to be more than a niche OS. For me it already has been an No for long just cause of having to look through a dozen different Versions of it, each Video or Post you look says something else and 90% of it filled with Stuff / Words you have to look up to know tf that even is unless you already are experienced with Computers (which 99.9% of people aren’t).
And every single pre-built PC is also coming with Windows, many Apps, Games, Drivers and the likes as some said here already not working with Linux or not properly. Or do work but Updates slow af.
And what if Linux becomes bigger and Microsoft then does it like PS/XBOX/PC where they pay Companies to only release it on their OS / have it work there exclusively? and you gonna wait 1-2 years for it to be released or constantly switch OS to play different games lol
Do yo have stock or family members working for Microsoft? If that is the case, I don’t mind your shilling.
But on the off-chance you were misinformed, you should know that Linux is the largest and most well funded software project in history. And it is compatible with more hardware than any other operating system.
Video games are only a small and niche concern to this project though. It’s already busy running the rest of the world.
Take your religious linux support elsewhere. I use both OS’es for work. We are talking about gaming here, not servers and infra. I have zero interest in engaging in tribal discussions about politics, religion, culture or tech. Everything has a purpose, except such “discussions”.
I hope so. MS needs more competition on this market, but unless there is some actual big money behind this push like Valve, GPU manufacturers and game studio will never put much focus on Linux experience.
I just tested two linux setups yesterday and can confirm this at least from my experience as an old nvidia user (GTX 1070).
I tested darktide on both Nobara 42 and Bazzite with their respective Nvidia isos and took a 20%~40% performance drop in both darktide and hitman woa.
in my case, the drop makes the game unplayable in anything higher than malice basically, also, lots of crashes when messing around with video settings in game, a few crashes made the game not open again untill tinkering with proton versions.
Unfortunately, I’m gonna stick with windows for now. Highly recommend getting an AMD card and switching to Linux tho, for anyone in such a position of choice.
I have given a fair amount of thought as to why nVidia is so adamant on not sharing its source code. And through discussions with people with first-hand experience, I am now convinced that they simply cannot due to how they segment their markets.
They essentially sell the same hardware at different prices, and the driver software tells the GPU hardware how to perform accordingly. If they shared their code with the community so that bugs could be fixed by everyone, then nobody would buy the high-end GPU hardware anymore.
So it’s not really about indecision or incompetence. It’s a rational choice based on their bottom line.
