Darktide is unplayable for me

Between a choppy framerate no matter what I do and unstable internet connection that rubberbands and drops me every other game, Darktide as a game just does not function anymore.

I have decided to uninstall the game to free up disk space until I can actually play the damn thing again.

There is another thread which basically says: play it on Linux, which might be worth a try. But yeah I see the same issues, additionally sometimes shots seem to get lost in the warp.

I’ve noticed masssive framerate drops as well recently, probably due to the troll event that overloads the engine with explosions and sounds?

As a longtime Linux user who plays Darktide on Linux for over a year after around 3 months on Windows (on my Win 10 gaming partition I didn’t need for even one game since then), I’d say yes, why not? Linux is free and nowadays absolutely valid for gaming apart from kernel-level anticheat crap. The only things required are the honest will to learn and some time to familiarize oneself with a new operating system. edit: Oh, and some luck with the hardware that wasn’t bought with Linux in mind. :game_die:

It’s also okay to ultimately drop it again if it somehow doesn’t fit one’s expectations or needs. At least that’s clear then.

I don’t think I have the patience to navigate Linux, and there’s a bunch of other games in my library that I play that I don’t know if Linux would brick them or not. I don’t have the storage space to dual boot and Win11 is fine, at least.

My only experience with Linux was trying to set up a PiHole for the first time, and that took a few hours and lots of spite and rage to get working, and then we only used it for a month. Suffice to say my opinion of its ease of use is not very high.

I share your same apprehension while I mull over making the leap as the Win10 deadline approaches. Just dropping this resource for future research: https://www.protondb.com/

You can pickup a low-mid tier 1 TB NVME drive for under $50 or a 0.5 TB for around $30. Install Linux, give it a try. Worst case you hate it and can bounce back to your old windows disk.

Also JayzTwoCents had a video recently about some stupid reason for game stuttering coming down to some BT/Wireless controller being dumb even though it wasn’t being used. You may want to give it a watch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWTZkB9rVU0

You do now!

As someone who has recently started their Linux journey I can definitely understand your frustrations as there is quite the learning curve. Just think of it as the Darktide of operating systems!

Could it be related to the Nvidia driver issue? Some people are saying the game runs MUCH smoother if you revert to the March version of drivers.

Might be, I’ve updated whenever I got prompted. I still remember the game running poorly even before March, so who knows.

Hi, I’m looking in to the possibility of whether some of these issues could be tied to the latest NVIDIA driver update. If anybody is happy to be part of this experiment, I’d love to know whether rolling back to an older driver version (say, 576.88) improves your performance at all.

If I play on GeForce Now Ultimate then it’s actually better than playing locally even though I have a decent PC so idk what’s up with this game. That being said the game is fun I just can’t justify £20/m for GeForce Now Ultimate when I have my own PC now

I think part of it could also be my computer possibly being last-generation by this point, I can DM you an msinfo32 for you to pore over if need be. Any efforts to optimize Darktide would be appreciated as well.

There are also network problems to consider, but @Harridas’s thread already covers this in good enough detail. My playing on wifi doesn’t help.

These problems combined create an unstable and unplayable game. Most notably, these are issues I don’t have in Vermintide 2, aside from the odd disconnect.

Curious if this helps anyone else with stutters and so I can make sure it’s not a placebo effect:

Turn off screen space reflections and restart the game (low RT reflections mix rt with screen space and so are not recommended)

And no, don’t just run around in the mourningstar. There’s always going to be a hitch when a player connects or disconnects. Play an actual game.
