Darktide and linux

Hello

Due to MicroShit and WinCrap 11 25H2 (and everything that will come after), I decided to switch to Linux.
My distro is Fedora KDE.

Here the specs of my computer

OS: Fedora Linux 43 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition)
KERNEL: 6.18.16-200.fc43.x86_64
CPU: Intel Core Ultra 7 265K
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080
GPU DRIVER: NVIDIA 580.126.18
RAM: 64 GB

I wanted to know if someone has something similar and suceeded to launch Darktide?

If yes which Proton version? ProtonGe 10-32?
And what parameters for the application in Steam?

I succeed to launch the game.
I have seen the problem of the user config file that is destroyed every time you launch the game. However, once I start mission, I see the introduction and then when the mission initiate the 3d models (so when it should start), the game crashes.

Others details:

  • Ray tracing / DLSS is crashing the game. So, I have given up this.
  • I tried AMD FSR. It seems to not crash the game. I tried also without

I have 4000 hours+ on Darktide. But I don’t want to return windows. On all my games, this is the most problematic game. All others laumch, i have not tested intensely everything, but it launches.
Darktide is the most problematic.

Sidenote: I did not post in technical support because… Fatshark does not provide any support for Linux.
Sidenote 2: if there is no solution for a 5080, then I will just stop playing the game, and even if I have 4200+ hours on it… I plan to wipe my Macroshit OS this week end.
Sidenote 3: yes Linux is far better. I am really astonished by how good it has become.

And an other one

Go to below. Filter by Nvidia comments. People list their fixes.

ProtonDB | Game Details for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide

I already checked

I see that a lot, that made it working, have the 390 version, still not here in fedora
Not sure it changes something, but maybe

And that there is a lot of solutions proposed… And i tried several.

I guess I have to test… But tbh I think I am at the point that I will click uninstall. I have better things to do than trying to make, this only game that crash on my OS, trying to work.

Sidenote: i cannot understand how this game is gold on protondb

Actually can filter by Fedora instead. I see some people got it working.

Nobara is based on Fedora. More gaming focused distribution. Could try that.

But difference is that it will pre-configure with things like kernel, cpu governor etc to optimise on gaming, pre-installed fixes etc. Once installed, set aside time to run through their wiki of post-install process.

Then you can access Nobara community full of gamers to ask. So you will get technical support.

I think in that people want to get away from windows there are some considerations.

  • If Linux itself interests you to invest time in, then you will enjoy the journey. But it’s time involved. If you don’t enjoy tweaking, troubleshooting, optimising as process itself. Might not be for you.

  • Honesty though on Nvidia - DX12 games like Darktide - You will lose performance on Nvidia. For now as Nvidia announced they’re going to focus on improving it - Could be months/years. It will be like moving down a whole GPU tier or more.

  • Even if not interested now - There may come a game in future where anti-cheat won’t play nice with linux or not at all, so I wouldn’t go full Linux.

  • 1st Drive for Linux and 2nd drive for windows for Darktide. Linux and Windows on same drive - Windows updates could brick Linux bootloader. So keep on separate drives.

Like you said why go down that rabbit hole for just one game. Throw Darktide on windows drive and for everything else that works go to Linux drive.

Literally, this means keeping windows only for Darktide.
My other game I play a lot, Elite Dangerous, works really well on Linux.

I enjoy it… I even don’t understand how it can please me so much. I started to tweak the files, added a custom keyboard layout.
This is really satisfying.
And I can live with a less beautiful game… however, Microsoft I hate them… they change bios settings (I love the hidden activation of secure boot…), mess boot etc.

I can play Helldivers, deep rock galactic… but Darktide is the only one that refuses to work. But from what I saw, Fatshark made 0 effort on it. They do not care at all. But here, they did not lie, they always said there would be no support about linux.

thanks for the Nobara idea. I will test it.
3 days on Linux… so, I did not know this distro.

I can live with that… and I cannot thrust Microsoft to handle my computer
Here an image that summarizes everything:

EDIT: Downloading Nobara KDE NV as we speak. Thank you for the tip.

I heard good things about https://bazzite.gg/ (I think it’s also a customised Fedora?)

Sadly, similar to AMD GPU experience, Linux gaming comes with its own issues, if you are lucky there are workarounds and community fixes.

P.S. Actually nvm, I think Bazzite is immutable, so not sure how well that would fit into your day to day desktop experience.

Linux user here. Darktide was never really optimized for Linux but it has the barest functions working. I use Kubuntu, a distro based off of Ubuntu with a layout no different from windows in feel and UI. i also use a AMD 7700 CPU and 7700 GPU and AMD does work better with linux and always stays up to date. Darktide for me works just fine, save for some graphical issues I’ve later solved, but I have to ask a few questions.

  • Are you using Wine, Winetricks and Protontricks?
  • have you validated the files to make sure nothing is lost?
  • did you store the files in a folder you have ease to access?

Wine is a linux open-source project that provides a compatibility layer to windows programs to run in a simulated windows environment on a different OS, such as Linux or macOS. It’s not so much ‘emulating’ windows and more creating a space with a basic windows structure, if you ask me. More experienced users might know more then I do.

Winetricks is more a workaround for issues with Wine, itself. it can be used via commands or a GUI, and adds the ability to easily install missing DLL’s, applications, fonts, and other abilities to edit and tune your Wine.

Protontricks is more a wrapper for Winetricks to work with proton. it’s the same idea but for proton games; adding missing DLLs, apps, fonts, tweaking, ect. Personally i feel it’s a critical tool for linux gamers to have just in case you’re missing a DLL for a app to work. Now any game designed to work on linux natively or optimized for linux might not need protontricks, or even needs proton, but in most cases it’s should be installed for games having trouble running on proton alone.

(on a side-note; you need Protontricks if you ever want to mod games like Fallout 4 or Cyberpunk 2077, as you’ll need DLLs and programs like C++ installed to use the more complex mods.)

For my Darktide, i use GE-Proton10-32 (flatpack). it’s hardly ever crashed on me for hour long gameplay, but I also use a custom launch command to make my game work as well. for most linux game issues it’s a problem with the launcher and you might just need a launch command for your Darktide.

RADV_PERFTEST=video_decode RADV_DEBUG=nodcc DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%

This just helps with my issues with launching and also used for graphical issues as well. If you experience any issues with graphics, such as potato quality meshes or your las gun looking like polygons, this is an issue with Fat Shark not knowing how to optimize for linux users and the game assuming you’re using a SteamDeck or something else and just throttling your default GPU limit settings. You can read my post here on how I fixed that issue "Mesh Streaming" still not working for ryzen 5 series users - #8 by Phantomshotgun

Oh yea, if you need to look through and edit code, and notpad isn’t enough, look into installing Kate. It’s like Notepad but with more bells, whistles, a history search, and able to read active log files.

Linux gaming works pretty great.
95% of my games work on it (tested 21 games - 3 have problems).
My problem is Il-2 (need to patch it), Cities skyline 2 (need to patch launcher) and Darktide.
But Darktide is the only game with all these problems.

There are lot of players that seem to have succeeded to make it working. So, it may be possible.

Proton with Steam (tried several versions) and tried ProtonGe.
Tried also Protontricks… and also reverted changes when checking files with Steam.

I tried yesterday bottle. But stopped it after 2 hours work… I feel that it failed somewhere.

That’s my problem… I tried so many things, that I don’t even remember what I tried, and what I have not yet tested.

Yes, and I tried with mods desactivated also :stuck_out_tongue:
Even, if… I cannot play without one mod (the one that permits to toggle walking / running)

Yes, I planned at first to use windows and linux.
But, as everything works fine on linux and I have things to replace everything I was using on windows, I really plan to get rid of Windows.
So, yes, the files are easily accessibles. They are on a different disk that is mounted at OS start.

I use Kate since I started to use Fedora.

Thanks. One thing to test.
Game launches fine. I can even get to Morningstar, launch a mission. Mission loads. Introduction plays fine.
But it crashes just after that.

You might have to get the log files to see what happened there, but it does sound like it could be a launch code issue if mine worked half way. Steam launch codes i’m not a expert in and i had to get help for. what are your PC specs. namely the CPU and GPU you use and version of Fedora.

EDIT: i also found this in some searches. i don’t know if you’ve seen it, but maybe it might help https://www.reddit.com/r/Fedora/comments/1q3cvwm/issues_playing_games_on_steam_with_fedora_43_and/

try glorious eggroll if you haven’t. I had a lot of success with it in the past. edit: just checked the issues, and there were multiple reports of darktide crashing w/ wine-wayland and it’s been addressed, so give it a shot.

I drive linux primarily as well, but dual boot for gaming (it’s just easier). if you gotta extra drive, maybe go that route (i play it safe and physically disconnect the linux drive during windows installation to ensure there’s no chance windows will overwrite the bootloader (when windows sees an existing efi partition, it can’t help itself – it has to go dirty it up), then just run os-probe to add windows to grub).

My setup works just fine:

  • GPU AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT
  • CPU AMD Ryzen 9 5950X
  • RAM 64 GB
  • OS Linux 6.19
  • Proton Experimental

Bazzite is the gaming OS of Linux and which I use and I have zero issues with Darktide outside of Fatshark’s poor optimization.

Darktide works better on Bazzite than it ever did on Windows 10/11.

I feel that I mase a mistake by buying an nvidia gpu.
I am actually converting all my disks to btrfs and need to comfigure several things…

Honnestly, considering all the games that work, if I would gice up darktide, so be it.
I have reached the point where I cannot use windows and appreciate it… That s the contrary.
This OS has the talent to make me angry… Because it changed by bios, because it wants to update even if I had desactivated that, because he messed my computer.. Because file system used is so bad etc.

I stay on Fedora. I like red had distro.
Nobara is really restricted when you want using your computer for lot of different things.

And I am really astonished by all these software totally free that can replace paid app on windows… Seeing that you can get a nice explorateur (dolphin) totally free and that you would require to pay for same thing on windows… This is really disturbing.

I have installed, again, my steam. I wanted to get the drive in Btrfs. Don’t tell me that what I did will forbid me to play on windows… i knew it.
If even I really need windows, I have put it on a single drive of 500 gb (nvme, not my best) and the OS will have access in read only to Btrfs drives (yes, let s avoid that wiincrap pollute all my drives)

Maybe think about having 2 computers. I have a 12th gen Core i3 with 16 GB of memory as my main linux PC. 45 watts, does every non-gaming thing I need, respects my privacy, etc… and my windows gaming PC that only plays games. I disable all the crap I can, but at the end of the day all it can really spy on is my gaming.

my primary linux drive is btrfs, and secondary drive(s) are ext4; windows can’t see any of them w/o a third party tool.

No way…
I can switch to windows if really needed.
But I will configure it to just be something to use temporary.

I am really too much impressed by linux. And too much disgusted by Microsoft.
I really want to get rid of Windows. So, as I said, or I find a way to play darktide on Linux, or I stop it here.
Anyways, Nvidia is bringing support to linux, and all new games have linux support.
Maybe it is just time to stop Darktide. This is the only game that does not work at all.

I think the problem is linked to… the Nvidia GPU. THe 590 should come soon enough. By the time, I can play Helldivers 2 and 19 other games.

For now, it doesn’t work. But I still have many things to configure in the system. So I had no real time to check if I can make it working.

Exactly why I do that…
I plan to let a driver in read only to be able to see my btrfs drives.

I hear you. I started my Linux journey 20 years ago when I was in college and never looked back. Then came the self hosting, the homelab…

I know some people here have gotten it working. It would be nice if we had a forum for Linux support. @FatsharkJulia Would it be possible to get a dedicated space for Linux support? I know FS doesn’t officially support Linux but it would be nice if we could aggregate all of the Linux knowledge into one place.

Yes! I’ll sort this out

Made it working!!!

Wow… Definitively, WinCrap won’t see me again

This is exactly what Wincrap made to me... and the Linux effect
