Nobody likes the Lights Out modifier (without modding it, at least)

I’ll be honest ; In Lights Out maps I use the mod Emperor’s Lantern with a low-radius, like 2 meters, so my immediate surroundings are identifiable without outright cheating (I’m on an Oled monitor so blacks are slightly crushed).

This single mod has made me really like the Lights Out modifier, where previously I would avoid it like the plague.

Unfortunately… it appears that most people in QP do not use this mod or are not aware it exists. Consequently, people who join these games either:

  • immediately disconnect
  • or they die to easily preventable causes because they can’t see sh*t

Please FatShark, in Lights Out you just gotta improve the brightness of the basic flashlight so people don’t need a mod to appreciate a modifier.

I like it a lot.

It makes the game play like a horror game at times, and it also works better, since it doesn’t have to load in all the textures at all times.

It also affects balance and makes shooters less of a threat, a single shooter can’t target you half across the map with pinpoint accuracy, which makes it kinda unique and compliments melee (that everyone here wants to promote).

Not to mention it also gives a reason to use certain weapons and talents more. The Exe Stance talent that highlights enemies for everyone on the team is absolute banger for these missions. Nuncio Aquila has in-built flashlight that illuminates the surrounding when you place it. All the guns with flashlights are also far from meta, gives all the more reason to use them.

I like it this is the much better checkpoint check to know if you know the map and the game. And I play 20000% Vanilla since launch no mod ever they are all useless you can remove all the hud totally for me will be fine.

lol

light’s out is by far my most fav mutator. speak for yourself, thanks.
the first time i dropped into one, i didn’t even know it existed, and i immediately felt like playing an Aliens game. it was FREAKING AWESOME. ever since i actively seek out maps with that mutator!

side-note: i refuse to use mods in this game. the game actually is very generous on light’s out missions, considering you can see the enemies head very clearly in the dark, and the visual design is great for that (maulers have orange wide bar, grunts glow green, the gunners light up the room around them while shooting, and so on). you’re missing out when not playing the game with the intended (vast amounts) of clues it hands you

I’m pretty sure the title is just an example of an indefensible hyperbole, the popular rhetorical device, and not genuine stupidity or arrogance.

Don’t feel bad. It’s an easy mistake to make.

Of course it’s hyperbole ; I could have put the most milquetoast, moderate take as a title for this, and nobody would have ever glanced at it.

Of course it’s all about personal experience ; but if I didn’t consistently struggle to fill a QP lobby in Auric games with this modifier, I wouldn’t have bothered typing this.

Don’t feel bad about your reading comprehension ; it’s an easy mistake to make.

Lights out should have more specials, then I would like it more :smiling_face_with_horns:

Or at least the possibility of hi-int/STG combo! Is there and I am just trippin??

There is just something incredible about the glowing eyes of a swarm in the darkness… and i appreciate the additional challenges to map traversal and coordination.

To your credit I would still appreciate a liiiiittle more light though. If only we had weapon mods, its annoying that I don’t like the weapons with torches attached (not ‘nuff stabby)..

Nobody likes the FOG modifier

Fixed that for you. Leave darkness alone, at least you can clearly see glowing eyes and glowing parts of elites/specials. In fog you can’t see anything at all.

Huh, on some maps you don’t even notice power supply, like at all. Gotta turns that brightness up fam

why would i tho. it’s no mistake saying “speak for yourself, i don’t share your opinion in the slightest”. that’s just factually acurate,

on a side-note: this isn’t even my native language, so i’m plenty fine

Nothing makes me want to quit a mission more than the lights out modifier. Staring at black is not fun.

Same, if it was Hi or HiSTG with Lights Out I’d play it much more. There is a Lights Out Maelstrom but its much rarer than the regular modifier.

I don’t hate visibility modifiers, what i hate is Fatshark often making it a center piece of the events and then polluting the board and quickplay with it for weeks!

I’d be far more partial to visibility modifiers if there was a opt out of events for quickplay.

I guess it’s time to change my username to “Nobody” then

I’m surprised this mode has so many defenders. Personally, it’s completely unplayable for me if the lights are on in the room, so with Lights Out I have to turn the room lights off — and even then it’s uncomfortable. I even had to install a mod that shows which mission I’m loading into, so I can switch the room lights off before spawning on the map. But apparently not everyone does that, so people get confused about where to go and step into the void. In short, it instantly doubles the chances of failure

if they gave everyone a good flashlight by default i suspect the mode would be beloved just because of how cool it looks
it’s not that cool to be literally blind. it’s actually not too bad if you know the maps well and i personally don’t struggle with it but a lot of people don’t so it just is incredibly disorienting and unfun due to the default flashlight being worthless.

with a good flashlight the mode actually is really cool mostly because of how genuinely cool it looks but most weapons don’t have one so nice design there i guess. just give everyone a free chest mounted flashlight on this mode. for ogryn maybe a big floodlight

Just curious: Anybody have an example of a sci-fi game where the flashlights aren’t 10+ years behind our present tech?

It was one of the best mods early on, because most players knew to stick together, and it made it even more important to do so. It’s the same in VT2. Now it’s one of the worst.

Also I have black equalizer turned on 100% of the time I’m playing just so if I get that mod I don’t have to turn it on anyway. Went from not being able to see anything because OLED to actually not finding it that bad.
