16 years ago, right after the great war ended. Most devs back then were veterans and only had tires, sticks, and x-box 360’s to play with so it was a different time. No one had a producer to tell them to replace flashlights in games with garbage the way movie producers told directors to replace Mexico with a sepia filter.
Doom 3 was a turning point in games. It did a lot of good, but it also did a lot of bad to video game shotguns. It was a turning point in history, the last time a sci-fi horror game ever had a functioning flashlight before the woke mob took over and started adding cutscenes to doom sequels and making assault rifles progressively weaker than revolvers.
Power Supply Interruption is a condition we avoid in Havoc whenever we can.
I think the condition is enjoyed by some people, so I wouldn’t claim it should be removed, but it’s certainly a condition that most people don’t enjoy in my experience.
With that said, since it’s easy to avoid, I wouldn’t want Fatshark to spend time on giving us more ways to circumvent it.
Lights Out is a fun idea on paper, but I have poor night vision, which forces me to strain my eyes to see what was going on while playing the mode.
That strain is bad since it makes my eyes tired and uncomfortable, and your eyes are one of the most vital organs to care for.
First-person horror games that rely on a lantern (Amnesia) or a handheld flashlight (Chtulhu) normally do not cause me the same issue as Darktide’s mode because those games have way stronger hand-held light sources (where you are pointing the devices) so I don’t have to work my eyes as hard.
There are also immersion problems because the heretics are not handicapped in the same way that we are, even after Fatshark changed their behavior in Lights Out.
Horror games with bad lighting work because in 9/10 times you’re not fighting anything.
You’re either running and hiding or carefully and slowly walking around.
Darktide is an FPS and a completely different style of game - fast-paced - that needs strong lightning or at least DRG type lightning at all times.
I want to have good eyesight when I’m older, so I insta dodge Lights Out.
heavily recommend anyone to try out one of the flashlight mods like emperor’s lantern. it’s basically cheating but it makes the mode look incredibly good so it’s worth the experience at least once or twice, fatshark really built in a really cool lighting system then just doesn’t let you get a good flashlight to capitalize on it
you can also use soloplay to put the modifier on missions that have the modifier disabled (such as hourglass missions) which is cool in itself too
reminds me a little bit of how they made a cool fire modifier that changes the atmosphere, lighting and adds fire everywhere. very cool and adds to map variety by making them visually look different. but then they just removed it again
