Every week the Emperor “graces” me with his gifts, which then I have to waste time to discard in 99.9999% of the cases.
Shop item base score ranges (especially greys), casino crafting, contracts and the Emperor’s gifts are a total joke. Imagine being a senior game designer and calling this “gameplay”.
I haven’t bothered with completion for a long time now. I just make sure I have the two material pickup ones and go. If I get monster kills too all the better. Those two to three missions per week across 7 characters are plenty considering I never buy anything from him anyway.
But you never know. Maybe he’ll sell reds at some point. Or something.
Umm… 7 operatives? I was sure there’s only 5 slots?
So far I made one operative from each class with single slot open, if I ever wanted to make Female (Scottish… Irish?) Loose Canon.
Yup. Every week, on every character, every time. Often several times too, while you keep rerolling between that and the “6 missions with pubs on T5+/Mael without anyone dying lol hf”.
Melk is a failure of game design and concept execution.
The purpose of this character/mechanism is to have weekly rewards that encourage routine regular play and offer some additional path for gear advancement.
In practice, it fails on both counts.
The contracts are so annoying or grind-ey that they quickly burn out a desire to fulfill them all, many of them are just straight up onerous. This in fact discourages continuation of play.
On the second count, the gear is so random as to be practically worthless, the RNG at play that some C-suite at Fatshark so deeply fetishizes just undercuts the concept entirely. When you can log in for weeks or months and see nothing worth grabbing, no needed blessings, no gear of appropriate item level, the incentive diminishes and the worthless Melkbucks pile up. When one’s Psyker character gets offered repeated picks of choice Lasguns but never a Stave, while your Veteran never gets a decent rifle to take home, it ends up just pissing off the user.
As a lore element it then gets further frustrated, as Melk comes off as a blustery blowhard who can’t deliver the goods.
exactly this. melk’s goods are mostly blessing carriers. they’re rarely worth buying for actual use and will be worth even less when the game finally lets us build the items we want.
i’m doing his quests with my 5 characters only to make sure that i collect every blessing, and unfortunately this ties me into playing one character when i’d play another one, at least if i want his 1000 bonus.
grims are not worth the risk on auric (if i ever find them, that is),
3 or 6 (!!!) missions with no deaths with pubs just don’t happen,
so occasionally i take the 1 mission with no deaths and do a sedition speedrun with bots, and sometimes new players manage to join near the end and screw it up.
not to mention the fact that melk also has this weird habit of offering his quest as a lottery. so i reroll as many times as needed, dockets be damned, or i simply do my melking with another character, if i feel like doing them at all.
We’ll all have our favourites, but I reckon to have about 15 hours of gaming a week, so I do 4 avatars x
Highest plasteel collection I can get
Same for Diamantine
They’re the easiest with even moderate looting along the way.
6 monstrosities (maxed)
1 no death (min-ed)
750 melee (min-ed)
That’s the best combo IMHO in terms of cash for time. Ofc if you’re playing more than me you can max out, but that’s my sweet spot.
Melee I find easier to finish up than ranged. I believe things like dots don’t count for ranged nor melee, but you know where you stand with a brisk axe chop.
6 monsters are quickly done on auric. you get more than that in one single II-VEG game.
farming mats is imo not best done on the highest difficulty, as the team has to keep up the pace, and laggards can stretch the team to death
1 no death is easily done by speedrunning sedition, especially when it’s on weekends shortly before the contract expires. but no more than that, it gets tedious.
i insisted on not cheesing one a few weeks ago, had 7 games in a row where at least one went down (and mostly alt-f4), then tried to save them and went down myself in the 8th game, so… thanks melk, NO.
750 dregs / scabs vs 1000 is just 1/4 more, but gets you 230 vs 530 spacebucks. however completing the task can take surprisingly longer, so i prefer the 750 kills, more so i’m done with that character’s task and get the bonus
melee is quicker because people look funny at you when you’re wasting ammo on hordes.
It’s a third more - but yeah, it takes a surprisingly longer time to get to. You’d reckon another game, but I find it’s 2, maybe 3 more games. And the number of times I’ve ended a mission on 995 kills … then had to do another! RNG my bottom.
I feel like Melk needs some new contracts in general, to be honest. “Kill 300 enemies with headshots”, “Kill 100 enemies with explosive barrels”, “Kill a boss without being hit by it”, etc. We’ve had the same batch for years, and it just feels really uninspiring.
Doh. I should have slept more. Still it earns you more than double for 1/3 more work. But with 5 characters, taking the 750 contract makes for more varied play, and the bonus is more than the difference.
