Why is this still the case? I think many people (me included) thought a higher rarity of items will be added at some point, but at this point 80% is just 100%, maybe add a crafting option to increase up to 3 stats of a weapon by 20%?
And a question, is the game balanced based on the unobtainable 100% stats, or the current 80%?
Don’t have answers for a lot of your questions but through mine and others testing it seems like stuff is balanced around the 80 cap. You can say a lot of stuff about FS, but for the most part they know there math. There are lots of weapons that can only hit certain breakpoints of they have 80 damage and penetration, etc, at least before blessings. So I believe it’s very safe to assume everything is being balanced around the current maximum tier of weappns we have in the game and not unobtainable 100 stated weapons.
It may be balanced for 80% max stats, but presenting it as 80% is either a design blunder or deliberate dissatisfaction baiting and I’m not a fan of either.
Is it not obvious? Remember originally we were never supposed to have actual numbers on our stat cards. That only changed due to the tremendous backlash from the community after the beta. The 80% cap is a cheap psychological trick to keep players dissatisfied with their gear and perpetually grinding in the hopes of getting something better.
With how crazy in-depth the stat and breakdown screens are, I just don’t think that this tracks at all. And those screens were in the game on launch day. That’d be a hell of a sprint to get them designed and developed if they weren’t even planned until feedback was collected from the beta…
The roughly hacked together stat-screens that didn’t match the thematic style of the rest of the UIs? Last minute additions spun up in the face of the consumer backlash.
Well there was definitely a bit of rush in its implementation since there are some oddities here and there, like weakspot damage values for weapon attacks that can’t hit weakspots (eg. Purgatus and flamer, Trauma and Surge staff secondaries)
The stat cards not having numbers and then, days later, us having the most in-depth stat screens ever in a Tide game…that’s the kind of imperfect last minute additions I’ll happily take!
The weapons always had the numbers. They were just hidden from us until the executive decision was made to backpedal on the intent to keep them obfuscated. The details screen gave us a deeper dive into the numbers but the interface was plainly a rush job.
There is absolutely no evidence to support this, and the idea that Fatshark could whip this out (while doing everything else to prepare for the OG launch) in days in response to player feedback just rings false to me.
Your stat x 1.25 = your %. I had to argue with someone back at release that it was a 1-100% scale effectively, just poorly numerically represented. Sure FS kept this because they probably plan red weapons that can go to 100, but you know, you coulda just made the scale 1-100, and then changed the max to 125 to the same effect. They have however put a full range in preparation for a 100 value, so that’s something. Most ranges seem linear now, i think there were a few non-linear back closer to release, unsure if those still exist.
I never argued that the 80% current cap wasn’t odd. But to jump to “it’s a devious psychological trick” doesn’t pass the sniff test.
There are many potential reasons why 80% is the current cap, and the most obvious (and easy to rationalize) one is that it is telegraphing that there will be higher-quality items.
I don’t know, I’ve never seen it done in 30 years of gaming.
What would the incentive be?
“Look, your weapon will never be perfect and all the efforts you’re going through right now will be invalidated the moment a DLC comes out”?
from my understanding, based on people online looking through the code, the game is set up for gear to have a higher level cap already
i found that out when i was researching toughness curious
currently the max % for toughness is 17% if you get extremely lucky, but with a higher level cap, in the code the highest toughness you can get on a curio is 20%
my only guess is that, one day in the future, we may get a level cap increase? although. this in itself would be INCREDIBLY annoying to allot of players. who have grinded out for this good gear, only to have their gear trashed on by a future update
i lowkey kind of hate when games do stuff like that
the other theory is that, the higher level cap was planned from the beginning, but they decided to limit it due to balance reasons or something like that. and now it is just apart of some legacy code that, that they, couldn’t be bothered removing because it would be too hard to do so
Well, knowing that the crafting was brutal, and still isn’t free from unnecessary pain, I don’t think it’s a negative thing that the system clearly shows that there will be higher-quality items which obviously cannot be attained at the moment. So, maybe the underlying intent was, yea, to say “don’t sweat it too much.”
But in truth, I think the reality is that we were meant to get red/high-tier weapons before now and so this is just some vestigial jank hanging around.
