Is Ogryn the weakest class?

I enjoy Ogryn a lot because its so different. You break a lot of the game’s rules, but they also have a bunch of unique drawbacks only they suffer. Not being able to move faster than 5 darktide meters/s while stamina sprinting with most weapons is very noticeable. Especially when those cheesy karkers canceling knife heavies are pushing 7+ and leaving you entire rooms behind.

However they kinda go through waves with the updates where most of the weapons either feel unsatisfying or power crept by new adds. The thundershovels and pickaxes make every melee but the shield sort of obsolete. Rippergun lost a magazine around the time they gave Kickback like 12 more shots and buffed its damage, 2 of the Ripper marks are still bad (though Mk2 is OK I guess). They gave a nice QoL overhaul to one stubber only which was dominating usage before that from reserves and interactions with the tree already. Maybe its good that Ogryn is the moron because trying to understand any of these changes will lower braincells.

Ogryn is by far the strongest class and the most fun one to me. This necessiates understanding the limits of what you can do in this game in terms of aggressive play. If you can fully leverage the strong defenses he gets you can basically overpower the game. He has a skill floor in the sense that he doesn’t get to deal with shooters for free, whereas every other class has ways to do that, but it’s just that: a skill floor. It doesn’t mean he can’t deal with shooter, you just have to be a better player to do it. The payoff for learning how to slide and dodge dance on Ogryn to deal with shooters is becoming borderline unkillable by anything in the game.
It was the same deal with IB in Vermintide. Some people said it’s boring, other people use his passive and defenses as a resouce to play twice as ballsy.

Although there is the real caveat that Ogryn barely has any weapons or build variety, so he tends to bore players for other reasons

Ogryn is probably the strongest class in the game if we’re not counting VoC spam, issue is that Ogryn is just boring to play IMO.

i linked you my build in the other thread, feel free to browse the gameplay vids as well.
dont want to clutter the forums anymore for the week with my thumbnails

personally i’m more of a visual learner than anything so much i picked up from watching the “big guys” all the way back to the golden age of quake 3.

and a lot of these skills translate very well to darktide in general and ogryn in particular in my opinion.

but yeah, ogryn is about the only class i play, partly out of principle. why pick a smaller biceps when you can have tree trunks.

created my own channel just for ogryn gameplay, so that should tell you enough about my personal bias

speaking of which, the class combined with my playstyle allows for the most solid clutch and carry potential i can muster.

vet doesnt even come close and zealot aint my cup of tea.
and psyker well, for all my games i hate wand-wiggling chicken legs with a passion
muscle beats mind.

or in the words of the real life ogryn :

STABIL :+1:

Seconding this but dont skip a toughness node, those +25 ones are huge. Better to drop some heavy hitter sub-node.

Also

The MK4 has a sweep combo specifically for horde clear, no need to stab individuals

Do you know if he gathered the data while doing private runs with a four stack on comms? because Toughness Regen Speed is the only perk that comes to mind that is actually affected by how your teammates play.

Not sure I’d say that it would have come to the same results in quickplay with randoms, and that not even counting the situations where you have to split up the group due to flamer/bomber fire, tox gas bombs and so on.

Best use case I can see for toughness regen is for newer players to regain toughness while taking a break behind a wall with their closest teammate, which will most likely happen often before they get comfortable with diving gunner/shooter lines. No matter how much one can emphasize on using sliding to avoid damage, that’ll take time to get to a decent/good state.

If I had to chose a third type of perk for curious after 5% toughness and gunner resist for Ogryn, I’d pick revive speed. But I do admit that preference is coming from alot of quickplay games, and that having a full team (while not really needed, dependent on map and modifiers and so on) up makes the match run better.

I think it’s funny that people are referring to other peoples experiences when trying to argue for/against a stat. I personally just tried it out and formed my own opinion, it’s crazy to care about what someone else says, one way or another.

i mean ive played with it for probably about ~600 hours or so, i have my own opinions and they line up with what other experienced players have concluded. Its pretty cut and dry

If we take the viability of a class for true soloing auric maelstrom as a metric for strength, probably Ogryn is weakest.

not a flex, read the comment i was replying to above mine

In high difficulties where the hordes don’t stop, if you’re playing as a melee Ogryn, I would say it’s one of the weaker classes due to its melee weapons and the fact that toughness alone isn’t enough, and the nerfs to its damage resistance didn’t help much. However, if you go with the Bully Club and a build that regenerates toughness and increases heavy attack damage, you can get quite a lot done. The problem would be if your team doesn’t help much with ranged enemies, because in a hallway with a lot of gunners, they’ll turn you into SpongeBob.

excusez-moi?

I like bully clubba a lotta but its sittin somewheres near the power maul and not stabbing knife for ‘please help’ ogryn options. It might even be influencing your opinion of ‘low melee damage’ because its certainly that. It has a huge swing range and giant stagger. But instead of swing range you can take damage with a pickaxe. And hit 7 enemies with heavy swings, easily catching multiple ragers with thrust or headtaker/wrath.
