I was referring to a +15 one but maybe a heavy hitter subnode is less impactful

this is wrong on so many levels, its either by “intend”, lack of fundamental game knowledge or simply not having played ogryn past the initial lvl 30 with wrong blessings and crappy gear.
hordes are a mere (and welcome) mobile toughness recharge station, weapons like the branx delete, oneshot would even be too generous, the front rows, all the while i’m sliding from one engagement to the other.
ogryn in hordes is the definition of

Hi there,
As a sort of introduction: I play all classes, 3 of the 4 arround Lvl 250 - 350, so kind of equally, the 4th is at Lvl 670ish. As I reply in this thread the last one is my Ogryn.
This was not meant to be a “look how damn many levels I have” or “look what an experienced player Inam”, I’m sure many ppl here are way more experienced, have higher levels and more playtime.
It was meant to be an indicator in support to my statement “I’m an Ogryn-main(-player)”.
Yes, Ogryn’s skill tree is centred arround heavies, and that feels a little limiting. BUT there are viable fast and medium speed light attack builds possible, for example with the Krourk Cleaver (Mk IV) or the Borovian Pickaxe (which also works fine with a Block-heavy-combo). Yes drawback is picking up “confident strike” and drop a damage blessig, but you get more picks from the tree.
I advocate for 3 toughness curios with toughness, toughness regen speed, combat ability cooldown, stamina regen and I experiment with gunner resistance.
My favourite Ult for dmg would be “loyal protector” (with the respective talent), the stagger it delivers is a nice addition.
But charge is quite useful, too. In both ways as an “sh*t-hits-the-fan-escape-button” but also as an “get-me-deep-into-it-ability”.
For the Blitzes I need to say, I play a lot with Box Of Pain, but it’s more a passing one for me as I want to pick up both the impact node as well as “soften 'em up” (free 15% Dmg for everyone) and yes it delivers a lot of CC, which is not to say that I would disagree on a Dmg-buff or a higher amount if boxes as you do not have any form of regenerating it and it’s not so powerful as it needs to be limited. The current limitation of two and that it is obviously the lowest priority in picking-up-ranking, makes it for me a sparcely used tool.
I do not see that Ogryn has only crappy ranged options, IMHO if you use them right, they perform quite well and bring a different flavour to the table. But yes some buffs (like reload speed on GrenGauntlet) would be much appreciated.
I recently play a lot with the ripper guns and I love the new draw speed which helps a lot as a tool for specialists. But yes, most ranged options for Ogryn are designed for mid to close range, the rumbler being the obvious exception.
The only real issue I have is trappers behind a horde or bullwark shield wall, but this might be skill issue …
EDIT:
That Ogryns have a little issue with far ranged marksmenship is quite lore accurate as their ranged fighting style is more spray’n’pray, which is way most Ogryn weapons have a burst limiter
…
see, thats the neat part about ogryn i try to explain the scepticists.
as simple as the skill tree looks, eventually its 100% “you” in there.
levels, perks, talents, gear… all this “modern crap” i deal with happily because the game is so damn good.
and the atmosphere, chefs kiss ![]()
my roots go all the way back to doom deathmatch and eventually quake 3/unreal tournament.
these games had very simple mechanics but were unforgiving in displaying lack of skill in core components such as aim, movement, enemy prediction, map knowledge… you get the idea.
you didnt win cause your character “moved faster” or had some other gimmicky nonsense.
you got your 4ss kicked if the opponent was your better, simple as.
in all the other character trees i see stuff like cloak, horde freeze, shouts that send 360°on their 4sses
not saying they dont have their merits when
hits the fan.
but compare to mr.gadget
ogryn is RAW.
you want to shape an engagement, its your personal plan and execution of it rather than a push of a button disappear/cloack.
and that way the game feels much more in your face and “fluid” in a sense, personally i read the room so much faster since i opted to not only MAIN ogryn but “be” ogryn ![]()
that is cause current solo approach and the way the game can be “bend” to be solo-able in the first place is people skipping and avoiding all the fights out of concern a dog/trapper-boss combo puts an end to the run.
“real” solo would be dealing with everything the game throws at you without skipping engagements.
yet the way its designed around disablers, one person alone cant operate two levers 10 meters apart (figuratively speaking)
totally different games, but my space marine 2 solo runthrough on lethal i didnt skip a thing, be it boss or horde.
granted tactical was the easiest class given the grenade launcher, but as a first timer with little more weapons unlocked i needed to make up for the total absense of damage done to the boss by bots.
so in a sense i had to compensate two other rifles.
anyways, not saying solo runs in darktide aint require no skill but they are more on a “doom done quick” or “pacifist” range of playthroughs rather than a 100% cleared(endless spawns excluded of course)
Depends how you define “weakest”. If it’s meant as ‘hardest to play’ then couldn’t be further from the truth. Takes some adjusting but once you’ve glued your finger to the dodge button and picked up a nice pickaxe then it’s awesome.
If it’s meant as the ‘most boring’ then I can understand that. I personally love Ogryn and play as Oggy almost exclusively now but lack of weapon and cosmetic variety could definitely put some people off.
I just love the heft of it all.
The thing people probably get most wrong when struggling with an Oggy build is thinking that they don’t need to dodge. Dodge is life. Never rely on toughness.
I was going to say that dodging is critical on any class but then I thought about it and it was probably my ogryn that made me better at dodging and sliding.
ogryn makes you do things instead of you making the character.
he forces you to be acting instead of reacting by perks.
therefor its a better “tool” in my opinion for learning the fundamentals and hence the huge gap between regular “pubgryn” and “progryn” ™
i trademarked those
people wanna use, people gotta send lotsa rashuns.
smart ogryn aint hungry ogryn ![]()
The progryn brogryn ![]()
ogryn has the default attack speed set low because they expect you to pick heavy hitter
bad base toughness because they expect you to pick feel no pain
and negative crit because they expect you to pick the bullet keystone idk whats it called
entire tree could use some love same for most of the melee weapons
I actually started with ogryn as my first character way back when with the first technical test.
Over 2k hours I ended up playing veteran the most.
Bottom line? I think ogryns are really good, but holy crap they are so slow and cumbersome compared to the zippy-zappiness of the 3 human closes it really grinds my gears.
That and over-reliance on heavy attacks/thrust/crunch combo for the majority of their melee damage for single target. The picks are so overkill they dont need nearly this much stacking of perks/blessings, but every other weapon just feels like you’d do more faster on any other class.
Then again, it might be just my adhd brain that wants to click as fast as possible.
My 2 cents
Ogryn is slow… terribly slow… so much that I always feel that it is too slow.
But, I have made all penances for it. All keystones are great. Really.
The heavy hit keystone is really awesome. The feel no pain, is the one I don’t see as the best, BUT, it can allow you to play a tank. The lucky bullet one (burst limiter override), is absolutely strong (even devastating against anything, including DH).
In fact, at the question: « Is Ogryn the weakest class? » the answer is absolute no.
But at the question « Is Ogryn the funnier class? » the answer is a no cause the class has less weapons than others, so less options.
But Ogryns, weak? no. Ogryns can deal insane damages. And several builds are really insane. The heavy hit build permits to play a melee orientated Ogryn, while the counterpart (burst limiter override), permits to play a ranged weapon Ogryn.
And feel no pain is the tank keystone.
Must say that penances changed my mind on Ogryn and I see several builds that I want to play.
Once you’ve accepted that heavy swings is the only option then you can just learn to time all your dodges and slides in time with heavy swings. I actually dodge sideways in the direction of my pickaxe swings to get bigger swing arcs
^ I usually still drag it side to side a la VT2, it still helps afaik and it’s mostly just muscle memory.
yea dragging to the sides is a good habit
Learned this on ogryn, now I apply it to hammer with zealot.
Is he the worst class yes definitely he doesn’t compare to what the zealot and pysker can do in the slightest and vet just edges him out with his plasma gun and dueling sword
Does this mean ogyrn is bad
Absolutely not most things in dt are good it’s just there are so absolute outliers of utterly insane weapons the other classes have which ogyrn has 0
The biggest issues I have with ogryn is the skill tree’s heavy handed (heh) forcing of heavy attacks, general pigeon holeing of talents per branch, the awkward delays after many actions (ogryn is noticeably less snappy than the other classes, which can just make them feel clunkier to play. Slower is not synonymous with clunky), and overall lack of weapon variety.
They’re not weak though.
I’ve been experimenting a bit with hitting breakpoints using weapons and avoiding the heavy hits… it hasn’t been going particularly well
But yeah, I don’t think Ogryn is weak… just slow
The thing is with light attack builds, if you want that to be your main focus, you still have to use heavy attacks to get max heavy hitter damage before you can keep the damage up with light attacks on brutish momentum. If there was some other activation condition that would be cool.
Second, there’s just not a lot of interesting light attack weapons in Ogryn’s arsenal. Krourk 4 knife is probably the best example, but you weave in heavy attacks enough to benefit from heavy hitter without brutish momentum and are still a main source of damage. Bull Butcher is just a far worse Tac Axe 4 which I already dislike anyways. You can full light attacks into hordes with the 3b club which can be fun, but usually heavy light is better anyways.
Shield would have potential to be a lot more interesting if the lights were significantly better into hordes and the heavies (specifically heavy 2 with brutal momentum) were worse into hordes.
so if I stay away from heavy hitter, then it’s like “ok, I guess I’m taking less damage” but really, I was surviving just fine so I’m now investing into something I really really don’t need
great point about the light attacks, to hit the breakpoints without investing talent points into heavy hitter, you almost certainly need slaughterer or headtaker. the pickaxe works fine for this but then again, like I said, you take less damage… who cares? if nothing is bleeding through to health anyways
ROgryn with Achyls Twinlink is absolutely OP though, especially if you can afford to just mag dump into everything
