INVESTIGATION: Disconnects (Error Code: 2001, 2014, 3013, 4001) & General Connectivity Issues

Another evening of game being unplayable. This time another random teammate in one of my games confirmed to me in the chat they also are having this issue in all their games today. We both were experiencing constant desyncs and DCs in that particular game. I’m attaching log related to a few games I played today which were literally unplayable, with constant desyncs from the start of a match to the moment I just decided to quit them.

I think I found some pattern. Before I already noticed those “Panic started - Panic resolved” notifications in the console.log. They are not marked as errors, but as they mention “packet from the future” and contain time of how much it took to “resolve” the situation, it seems to me they are signs of packet loss.

Now I decided to compare their frequency and the times to resolve on them between “good” and “bad” sessions - and the difference is staggering.

Today’s log I posted above contains 30+ such entries, with a few of them taking 2-5 seconds to be “resolved” (whatever this means). At the same time, the log spans about 30 mins.

The log from my recent session of a few days ago that spans about 4 hours contains… twice as less such entries, with NONE of them taking more than a second to “resolve”. Almost all of them mentioning fractions of second it needed to “resolve” them.

@FatsharkJulia is it something that your guys are aware of? May be you could ask dev team to provide some comment here?

Hi FatsharkJulia,

I would like to report a recurring and increasingly severe issue that is making the game essentially unplayable for me.

A typical session starts normally, but after a few minutes the game begins to lag heavily:

  • characters stutter or move in slow, fragmented steps;

  • it becomes impossible to coordinate movements or interact with objects;

  • I take damage even when nothing appears to be hitting me;

  • enemy hits do not register, or they take no damage at all.

Shortly afterwards, the situation worsens: enemies and players start running in place or floating mid-air, and eventually the game either disconnects or crashes entirely. If it does not crash, I am returned to the character selection screen and asked whether I want to reconnect to the ongoing session. Reconnecting does not solve the issue—after a short time, the same behaviour repeats.

I have tested multiple network setups, all with the same result:

  • VPN and no VPN;

  • wired Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and mobile hotspot;

  • different ISPs;

  • different geographic locations (Europe and Central Asia).

The problem occurs consistently—recently in every single session. Peak hours make it worse, but it can happen at any time of day.

Error codes vary, but among those I have encountered are: 2004, 2002, 2019, 9999, 3013, and others I cannot recall. Friends of mine, using different connections and located in other parts of the world, are experiencing similar issues to varying degrees.

At the moment, the situation is extremely frustrating, as it prevents me from playing the game altogether. Any help or clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the logs from yet another unplayable session.
Unfortunately, the situation remains unchanged — severe lag, desynchronisation, and repeated crashes/disconnections make the game impossible to play.

It is honestly becoming quite frustrating, as these issues occur in every session despite all the troubleshooting attempts I’ve already described. I hope the logs can help you identify what is going wrong, because at this point it is extremely discouraging.

Here is another unplayable session log for your collection…
I hope this helps, though unfortunately the situation hasn’t improved — the game still becomes completely unplayable after a few minutes (severe lag, desync, enemies and players flying or running in place, and eventual crashes or forced disconnections).

Verfiied the Game, still not working

EDIT: Deleted appdata, verfying again

So it worked, disabled the mods aswell, but i got stuttering now…

However, its no the mods that make issues, cause my buddy runs 40 MOds in DT and has Zero issue, except with Hive Scum!

Seriously: haven’t you (FS) investigated ENOUGH at this point??

I left the game for a few months and came back to check if something was improved.

So we tried the game and…surprise! It went smooth (sunday’s evening). We felt positive and we bought 2 hive scum DLCs.

And yesterday’s runs were UNPLAYABLE. AGAIN. Stuttering, non registered hits, sliding enemies.

How I feel? Honestly? ROBBED.

I’m going to do the only thing I could do now, after all this time and these issues: leaving a bad review.

(see my config up in previous posts of mine)

EDIT: the re-emerging of the issue happened after last HOTFIX #83 1.10.2. Coincidence?

I play on Xbox Series S, I’ve been getting the 2004 and 2014 error codes in every game for around two weeks now, and I’m unable finish a game.

It didn’t “re-emerge” at all. I’ve been seeing it on on and off basis for at least 2 months as of now - with it becoming significantly worse in the last month or so. And becoming close to unbearable after the Hive Scum update. And I’m almost sure it’s related to game’s infrastructure not being able to handle all the load (either due to FS cutting costs by underspending on it, or because of optimization issues added in the recent updates to their codebase).

That’s why you see it happening mostly in prime time when most of users in the region are playing the game. That’s also why it’s so especially obnoxious after the last major update - both new class release AND 4 days of free access brought much more users into the game, choking the servers.

P.S.

Also I don’t think it’s related to difficulty level (i.e. gets worse with more mobs in the match). Just now when I got it in Auric, I quitted match and started another one in Heresy - almost immediately got desyncs there as well. So if there is a difference, it’s no that big.

makes perfect sense!

I’m attaching log from today’s session. It started normally and we saw no obvious issues for more than an hour. Then unplayable desyncs hit when I joined another group of friends, immediately. They said it was ok for them at the same time, they only saw mild lags during their game.

The problematic part of the log starts from about 17:00:00 of its internal time (what is UTC time I think), and lasts for about 30 mins during which I tried to reconnect to the session once, then gave up and also afaicr tried to start another game on lower difficulty for comparison - which also was ridden with desyncs.

After that I played one mission in Helldivers 2 - no problems at all, not a single lag. Thus it’s unlikely my Internet connection that causes it.

not even abe to login in the Morningstar. Fix your servers!!!

@FatsharkJulia

I thought it will be useful to summarize some observations of how this issue manifests itself, collected so far. May be it will help with narrowing scope of your investigations.

  1. When it happens, it usually affects one, rarely a couple players (I had some of them telling me this, and also saw other people dropping from the game and getting back shortly at the same time I was DCed due to this issue too).
  2. It seems to never affect all players at once, at the other hand. What, IMO, means it’s not the main code running the game that you need to check, but something that “splits” or “routes” the network traffic to each of the participating players - or the part of network topology that delivers that traffic over the Internet
  3. When it happens, it usually sticks. For me personally, I almost never see it resolved on itself - though some other players told me it sometimes does for them. For me, it usually will last for hours. Not sure what to make of it, as if that would be due to some quota exceeded in some regional CDN or whatever you use to deliver your services to end users worldwide, I would expect it then to manifest more random behavior. At least within the same region - but I multiple times experienced situation when between me and my pal who lives in the same city, one of us had the issue, while the other one didn’t.

It does when they are under the same router.
And surprise surprise I don’t think it is their connection’s fault because as soon as one of the two gets under a VPN the lags are no more synchronized!

In my case all the time I had those desyncs with somebody else on the team, it never was somebody from my country even, just a random dude. On the other hand, with my mate who live in one city with me (but different district and different ISP), we always have this issue in succession (when he has it, I don’t - and vice versa).

So it definitely not something tied to geographical location.
