INVESTIGATION: Disconnects (Error Code: 2001, 2014, 3013, 4001) & General Connectivity Issues

We’re looking in to a rise in reports related to disconnections and overall connectivity problems in Darktide, often paired with errors such as Error Code: 2001, 2014, 3013 and 4001 . Your input will help support the investigation.

Please take a moment to answer the questions below:

  • Describe your issue, including the most common error code you receive (if any)
  • Which platform are you playing on, and are you using a Cloud service (such as GeForce Now)?
  • Which country are you playing from, and what’s the name of your internet service provider (ISP)?
  • How are you connected to the internet (e.g. wired, Wi-Fi, using a booster, etc.)?
  • Is this a consistent issue, or does it occur during specific times (such as peak hours)?

assortment of error codes dont remember which exactly but i have not disconnected from an on going game, my errors are usually during match making which then causes the game to reset to operator selection screen

gforce now/steam

  • Which country are you playing from, and what’s the name of your internet service provider (ISP)?

T-mobil Hungary and usually EU central servers for Geforce now

  • How are you connected to the internet (e.g. wired, Wi-Fi, using a booster, etc.)?

wired though i dont think thats relevant for cloud services

  • Is this a consistent issue, or does it occur during specific times (such as peak hours)?

not often for me usually late in the evening if i had to guess

The game will stall, freezing between 5 - 10 seconds before resuming. After which the enemies will be unresponsive, floating across the floor or up into the sky. This goes on for roughly 10 - 15 seconds before I disconnect with either an Error 2014 or 2001.

I play on Steam. No cloud services.

USA West. Google Fiber. I have a wired connection.

It is not consistent. I can experience disconnects at any point in the day.

I do play with mods. And I have tried to disable them.

I have a group of friends I play with, all on US West, all of them do not use mods and experience the same disconnects as I do.

Will follow up with a log asap

Took long enough to make a megathread about this.

NOTABLE PROBLEMS:

  • 2014 (will stop receiving updates from server mid-mission, causing everything to freeze and lock in an animation for a few seconds before disconnecting)
  • 9999 (seems to happen sometimes when I cancel matchmaking for some reason)
  • Had an issue the other day where the server hosting a Havoc mission hard crashed and none of us got credit for it despite crushing it, which was extremely demoralizing.
  • Overall ping spikes (this is not just DT, it also seems to happen in VT2 and Path of Exile, so maybe it’s a wifi thing? Ping seems to jump 100ms or more which makes the game feel awful to play)

The Deets:

  • Playing on PC, Steam
  • Connecting from US East with Spectrum
  • Playing on Wifi (would prefer ethernet, but not possible at this time)
  • Unknown consistency of the issue. It happens even during off-hours on US East. Seems to happen at least once a day for me, though, if I play DT all throughout the day.
  • Mods have not been disabled, and frankly I don’t want to. @FatsharkJulia This question is important; Are there any mods Fatshark has identified that could be contributing to connection problems?
  • No console logs yet. If I get another disconnect I’ll post it in the thread.

Is this somehow related to the game dropping so many inputs and overall feeling of latency and bad connection to the servers? I know it’s not just me who thinks the game seems to have become unusually unresponsive lately.

Something has changed with the game lately. I don’t know what it is exactly but it just feels less responsive than usual (and it was never a particularly responsive game imo). It’s become so bad lately it’s genuinely eating into my enjoyment of the game.

I rarely get any errors or crashes, so there isn’t really anything for me to upload in terms of logs or crash reports.

Two issues I run into quite a lot is the game ignoring venting shriek or telekine dome activations and it very frequently taking multiple (from 3 to 5) buttonpresses to activate telekine dome before the game seems to “register” this. What I often get is a sort of “ghost” appearance of the dome for a split second, as if the game is trying to manifest it, as I get a glimpse of the dome outline on the ground but the ability has not been activated. I’ve basically now internalized that I must literally spam the button numerous times to ensure it takes effect and still it some times fails entirely. With player deaths often being the consequence.

There is also a considerable feeling of delay (somewhere between 400 and 1000 ms) between buttonpress and the effect manifesting on-screen which seems completely out of proportion to the ping reported on EU servers (I’m in the 15-21 ms range it says).

It might be partially tied to large enemy numbers and/or stacking buffs and debuffs on massed enemies in high level Havoc games, but I’ve definitely come across the behavior in Auric Maelstrom and Mortis Trials also. There just is something weird and wrong with how this game treats or prioritizes player input.

It’s not you. Definitely the game.

I’ve placed solo mod and it is smooth.

Notice how at start of missions in match making, very responsive in input latency then halfway through the mission your character feels muddy in responsiveness, literally dragging through mud.

Delayed responses or non-registration. i.e. You press F, nothing happens, press again and it activates 2-3 secs later or not at all. Happens a lot more at higher difficulties as things get more busy on screen.

There is even a mod that has had 18K downloads - So it must be a common problem for people to download - “Guarantee Ability Activation”

Even in mod notes mentions the “ghost” shield you’re experiencing.

I’ve been enjoying Apex Legends, Overwatch and Marvel Rivals. Very fast paced, very smooth. Something is wrong with Darktide’s rented servers…

Error 2014 is probably the most common, but I’ve seen a lot of different ones. Most commonly, this is part of a mass DC. Meaning, more than 1 person disconnects at the same time. Meaning, this is very much not a me a problem and feels a lot like a server problem.

Additionally, it has happened more frequently when teams had mixed platforms (e.g., Steam & Xbox) where one group DCs. But, not always! I also have have had it happen with full Steam groups. This has killed more than a few Havoc 40 runs. :frowning:

Also worth noting: This happens far more frequently on high Havoc runs. Pretty much never in regular games, a lot less in low Havoc games, and far and away the most on Havoc 40s. Again, feels like a server issue. The more load, the more chance of disconnect. It doesn’t happen when things are calm, but when things are pretty wild. Hence how it’s ended more than a few runs.

Steam.

  • Which country are you playing from, and what’s the name of your internet service provider (ISP)?

US-West - Comcast. But, again, this happens most frequently to me as a mass DC affecting folks on different providers at the same time.

  • How are you connected to the internet (e.g. wired, Wi-Fi, using a booster, etc.)?

Entirely wired and negotiated at 2.5G to a network that’s 2.5G all the way to the router.

  • Is this a consistent issue, or does it occur during specific times (such as peak hours)?

I guess I answered this up top. The intensity of the game correlates to the chance of DC. Havoc 40 being the most likely. 70 - 80% of the time it’s a mass DC, meaning it affects more than 1 player at the exact same time.

Again, I’m gonna stress that the issue appears to be server related, not individual. At least in my experience.

No, but I play with folks who don’t use mods, or can’t (Xbox & Playstation) and they’ll be part of the mass DC as well.

I stopped collecting these long ago since this has been going on for as long as Havoc. Next time, I’ll try to remember to upload a log.

Additionally, this week alone I have experienced 3 “mission aborted” errors in the team loadout screen before the mission even started. Leaving us with a message that we were already in a Havoc game. The servers are clearly having problems.

Hey Cobalt, I understand. The issues I’ve recorded so far seem to stem from the Mod Loader itself, but we need some help from the community to identify how widespread this is.

Based on reports from other players, this appears to be more of a server-side issue than a client-side issue, though I’m not putting client problems out of the picture just yet.

If you find anything new in this part of the investigation, do keep us posted. I would be more than happy to disable a specific mod if it ends up being a problem.

If it ultimately is the modloader, how will this be addressed? Do you believe Fatshark will attempt to fix things to keep modding viable? (P.S. Please see about fixing icon loading with certain mods, such as Scoreboard and Crosshair HUD; they’ve been broken since N&V, and no fixes have been made so far aside from a quick patch to scoreboard to fix a crash at the end of the mission, which removed class icon renders from the scoreboard itself.)

Yep, and having played with these mods for some time now I just went back and tested with all mods disabled, and I can categorically state that playing WITHOUT the “guaranteed_X” mods I use the input issues all get WORSE. MUCH worse.

This is also happening to the Xbox players I regularly play with, who can’t install mods, as well as Steam players who don’t use mods. So, while there may be an issue with the Mod Loader, there appears to be at least another issue unrelated to that.

Unless you’re saying the Mod Loader is causing other people to disconnect. Which would be … interesting.

Linking to this report here as another example of what i’m talking about.

For the last two days, I can barely make it past the character selection screen (there’s often a 30 second to 2 minute delay from when I click on the start button to actually zoning into the hub space. Once there, I often cannot move, or stutter, or glide around before being kicked back to the character selection screen with a notification about Fatshark servers being slow to respond (sometimes,) or a 2014 error, or simply no notification, just a return to said screen.

Playing via Steam on Windows 11

  • Which country are you playing from, and what’s the name of your internet service provider (ISP)?

United States, ISP is Centurylink fiber optic

  • How are you connected to the internet (e.g. wired, Wi-Fi, using a booster, etc.)?

Connected via wi-fi, no booster

Consistent for the last 48 hours or so

I also have the same issue. Thought it was mod related so have removed them and reinstalled anew. Incidents seemed to have stopped until my last game where, during the end mission cut scene, the 4001 error occurs and I’m back to character select. No mission progress recorded.

Always without miss after I clear a mission, colect the gold, exp and return to the Morningstar; instead of returnig to the Morningstar I go back to the operative selection and a “error 3013” appears. Already did everything on the “Error Code: 3013” support article and it keeps happening. If I insist enough times I can eventually get to the Morningstar but never start a mission without the error 3013 appearing making it impossible to play. I need to close the game and re-open it every time a do a mission to be able to go on the next mission.

My most common error code is 2014, by far. In my playgroup I disconnect the most often, and regularly disconnect multiple times in the same mission.

I play on steam

I play in the US and I have experienced this issue in multiple locations on multiple internet connections. Wired at home, wifi in hotels, disconnects all the same.

We tend to play in the window of 1700-2100 PST and as far as I can tell disconnects tend to occur just or soon after something spawns. I recall a time recently when I was playing thunderhammer zealot and disconnected just as 3 bosses spawn, and just today (about 20 minutes ago as I post this) 3 of us disconnect at the same time as a big wave of gunners spawned, leaving our shield ogryn to hide in a corner until we could all get back to die as a team.

Probably not relevant to the technical side of things, but that 3-man disconnect cost us an otherwise very-carefully-executed run. It’s annoying to have one person drop now and again when a boss+horde spawns, but it ended our play session after the first mission because it’s so disheartening to lose to something entirely out of our control. I know that Fatshark is aware of this, and of its impact on player experience, but it’s issues like this that are going to stop us from playing the game again. I just feel the need to vent that. I love this game, and I want face frustrating difficulty and overcome the challenge, but I cannot defeat netcode.

Solo mode, or Vermintide with Bots, or a different game entirely are looking more and more like the way to go.

This game is one of my passions. I’m on PS5 and have about 700 hours logged. I love it, but as of last night, I can’t even load into the Mourningstar anymore.

Since Nightmares and Visions, I have had constant 2014 and 3013 codes and disconnects during games. I get the red ‘Response from Fatshark servers seems to be slow’ error and then in games I load into the experience is wildly inconsistent. Either I have games with little to no lag, or suddenly when a horde or player loads in, the game lags badly, with huge rubberbanding, input lag, flying enemies, etc before a 2014 or 3013. I may even load into a game that’s already frozen with flying enemies before I disconnect. I’m lucky if I can get 1-3 good matches in a day.

This has been consistent during peak hours and happens less during ‘off hours’.

It was much better prior to Nightmares and Visions.

The newest issue I have is that now I can’t get past the character select screen. I now consistently receive 3001 and then 3013 upon repeated attempts. Game is not playable for me anymore and it’s a real bummer.

  2. I’m playing in China, ISP is China Telecom
  3. I am connected through Wi-Fi but I have tried this with a wired connection, no difference. I have tried this through a VPN, which sometimes helps with stability but often drops.
  4. Being unable to load into the Mourningstar is now a 100% reproducible and constant error.

This is my favorite game. Please, please fix these connectivity issues or at least make them tolerable once again.

Disabling Mods helps sometimes but I still get huge lag spikes and disconnects. Time of day doesn’t seem to matter. Yesterday I was completely fine and had small hope that it was fixed. That hope has since been extinguished, back to being horrible today.
