Beating a dead horse here, but I’ll give my take on the state of vet (+317 Vet for context).
Having a lot of fun, but the grievances with the Vet tree/build limitations are warranted and numerous imo.
tldr; viable, but needs some love to be with the other classes. Vet gets out damaged, out supported, and simply brings less absolute value than the other classes. I’m sure they’ll work something out, as they’ve already alluded to.
Abilities: VoC is budget Chorus in terms of support (instant revive is a trap). Infiltrate is dollar store Shroudfield, with an abysmal cooldown, with no reliable way to make that better. Still workable, but that playstyle is meant for (and better) on zealot. Which basically means if you want to provide the most value to your team and round out a team comp, you’re compelled to play the ranged playstyle and take out gunners, and stance/left tree (with some middle tree near the end) best compliments that.
Auras: 3% damage is terrible and not near enough to justify you and your team running out of ammo. Movement speed is ok, but see previous sentence. This leaves you with the ammo regen, which is a veteran unique support ability for the team, especially given new ammo economy. Again, you’re compelled to pick ammo regen for you and your team. The other auras just don’t provide enough value given the opportunity cost.
Grenades: Krak is neat, but still probably worse than frag in most situations (fewer held, not as good at creating space, and new bleed is nice). There’s at least a case for Krak. Smoke is a joke and should be reworked completely…if it functioned as a sort of wall, or gave stealth/lowered threat level to people inside of it, and didn’t block teammates’ views…it’d be worth looking into.
CDR: Literally only tactical awareness (6 sec from SPECIAL kill, not elites). No other way to knock off cool-down…just add elites in there and that’d be pretty good. Stance’s cooldown doesn’t begin until you’re done chaining priority target kills together, so you can’t even leverage your ability to help with the ability/cooldown loop, like you can with zealot (vet infiltrate only kinda).
*Cooldown starting AFTER stance instead of on activation is a huge nerf that I’m surprised people aren’t talking about more, cause this neuters ability uptime and the vet’s overall offensive capabilities. 6 seconds per kill would be too much, but maybe spend a talent point to knock off 1-2 seconds per elite/special during stance or something.
Toughness/DR: Being able to stack both confirmed kill and exhilarating takedown + iron will or some combo of that almost makes up for unwavering focus…which was busted before, but haveing some DR associated with chaining kills would still be cool. It’s workable if you’re actually killing things during stance, which is nice. Having some sort of keystone or talent point that grants 50% toughness back on activation would be cool too.
So for the vet to be at their best and provide most value to the team, you’re now pigeonholed into:
- 1 aura choice, 1.5ish choice of nades, 1 ability, no keystones, bottom talents are very underwhelming
- no autoguns, shotguns, revolver, plasma, bolter unless you’re committing to the left tree/full ammo build, and even then it could be dicey, especially if someone else is running a danger gun. Most of the time not worth using them.
- Few select specialized builds that usually involve some sort of rending/crit mechanic. Funny recon las build is B+ at best, simply doesn’t have the stopping power for many armored enemies or when there’s chaos on the screen.
- Imo best guns for vet right now are vraks III, revolver, and lasguns. Agri braced probably still does ok too.
And after all that you’re STILL not providing as much offensive value as the other classes, not as much support value as the other classes, and some of the niche vet abilities don’t even work. Demolition team would be great support if it worked, but it only has a chance to give YOUR grenades back. Enhanced stance currently doesn’t work, so you can’t support the team with vet unique free intel.
Still having tons of fun, looking forward to whatever changes are coming
