Coming from darktide, Havoc 40 multiple times. Trying out some vetmintide 2, graphics and animations are a bit shoddy coming from Darktide, game feels a bit slow without the sprinting, sliding, dodge slides. Oh well, just a bit of a different gameplay loop.
But man, friendly fire? I just dont understand why that would be in the game. Coming from Darktide that feels like such a bad idea. I can see why they removed it, you can argue darktide is more ranged and vermintide is more melee but honestly I disagree, in vermide you have multiple careers for characters that are primarily ranged, in darktide the only class I can think of that stays in ranged mostly is flame staff psyker, even vet usually is in melee and swaps to recon las or plasma when big hordes appear.
Just such a weird thing to have in the game, must lead to so much toxicity. Hate the idea of not being able to unload aoe into a horde because it might hurt your team.
Because unloading into the elf right before extraction is a sacred tradition. you dont know what love is until salt and bardin unload their guns on your face only to get you up right after, and as a kerrilian main i wouldnt change it for the world.
Because…believe it or not…bullets and arrows hurt regardless of who shot it.
Theres no high tech smart bullet system that causes Saltzpyre’s bullets to become soft and harmless when making contact with someone he considers an ally.
I think it is good. Makes the game a bit harder. Also leads some some funny moments. I’m pretty sure there is no friendly fire on the easier game modes too.
Also, the Vermintide 2 community is a lot more mature and level headed. Where as in Darktide the user base can be somewhat toxic and it wouldn’t surprise me if team killing became frequent there.
I have played for over 1,000 hours on Vermintide and only came across one person who tried to sabotage the game via friendly fire. I killed him, got to the finish, and banned him.
I don’t understand this. There is a game mechanic in place that reduces the damage a team mate takes from friendly fire. If FatShark wanted to, they could reduce that value to zero.
If you ask me, Darktide should have friendly fire…
It looks stupid to fight over an area full of flames (zealot grenade) (and this is just one example)
One of the best mods for visual clarity makes friendlys partially invisible when they’re within 10ft of you too, so that would make it worse.
Visual clarity is a huge issue in DT.
Adding FF would also slow down the fight a bit too. The reason I don’t play it as much is things just disappear before you have chance to hit them, if your team has even one decent person.
Interesting, I thought Vermintide was considered more melee-focused while Darktide was more ranged combat. (I only play Vermintide, that’s just what I’ve heard).
I like the friendly fire in VT2 for the added challenge. If anything I wish it was stronger, as it is it blurs the line between annoyance and serious risk. I played a lot of Left 4 Dead in the past and there the friendly fire is full strength, meaning fully incapacitating a teammate in 1-2 shots. It required more precision when firing and better teamwork to not be in each other’s firing lines.
It balances out the power of ranged by adding a dimension to using it. I think Darktide would benefit from it too. It’s way too ranged spammy compared to this game. People just shoot through you in Darktide, it’s silly and makes ranged positioning and targetting braindead.
It doesn’t lead to toxicity so much as it leads to more fun melee gameplay without ranged careers just having an objective advantage.
The answer is simple, because that’s how the genre used to be.
Vermintide series has always been a love letter to the original Left4Dead. That game had friendly fire.
Friendly fire creates caution, immersion and teamwork. Choosing your shots carefully and choosing NOT to shoot can create better habits while increasing the skill ceiling of gameplay.
I agree completely that friendly fire should be removed. It takes more skill to play with friendly fire on, sure, but even the most skilled players mess up sometimes.
It’s not even the horde-clearing weapons that do the most damage to your team (e.g. flamestorm staff on Sienna, or flamethrower on Bardin). It’s the weapons that target elites and single enemies (bult staff, the javelins). Besides, there are already limits on range spam – you have ammo you need to pick up and for certain careers you have to get temp hp to vent.
But another thing is, if friendly fire is a necessary game mechanic, then why does it have to be so darn much? The bult staff takes away like 40 health points or more when it’s fully charged. And the bult staff isn’t even that good anymore because it means you can’t use lingering flames (which is the meta talent right now).
Even if Vermintide 2 players are more easy-going than darktide players, friendly fire still can create arguments between players. “Couldn’t you see I was shooting that enemy?” “Why’d you walk out in front of me?” Sometimes it’s no one’s fault; it can be a combination of factors that make it happen. Why add that game mechanic to a game that is cooperative? It doesn’t make sense.
Overall, I think it needs to be drastically reduced for certain weapons.
You cooperate by giving your ranged teammate a clear shot, and by picking firing lanes that help your melee teammates without doubling up on what they’re fighting already. The mechanic does encourage cooperation in the truest sense of the word, by necessity. It forces you to have eachothers backs rather than just mindlessly spamming everything downrange.
Im assuming you’re new to these games, but ammunition have NEVER EVER been a limitation on ranged weapons. Not even with torpedoes is it much of a limiter.
