At this point, I wish they would just add a couple of faces for those that want them to stop the same argument coming up and being repeated ad nauseum. More importantly for me, they should also add basic long hairstyles. Without weird chunks taken out of them, preferably. Tail, plait, bun, the simplest ways to tie back long hair and yet we don’t even have them as an option.
what is wrong with having the option? look at any socio economically badly off population and you will notice they arent just all ugly or anything like that. even in other 40k media theres good looking hive trash. i never got this argument, like you have to be ugly if you go to 40k prison? huh?
The aesthetic appeal of a character’s visual appearance is the primary concern when it comes to how that character looks. And it doesn’t only apply to female characters’ faces or hair - it also applies to armor, for example. People, for the most part, prefer MTX cosmetics simply because they usually look better than the free ones. And it’s a fact that the “prettier” faces are the ones that look better(especially when talking about female chars) - unless someone deliberately wants to play as some kind of mutant abomination.
Someone mentioned above “disfiguring scars” - but the biggest issue with the faces isn’t the scars. They’re optional anyway, and you rarely see female characters with them. The real problem is the deformation of their craniums: comically huge jaws, weirdly pressed faces that look more brainless than any Ogryn, unnatural jawlines from 40k years of professional mewing, and so on. Then there are the less noticeable skin issues: small scars, infections, and bags under the eyes that make it look like the character hasn’t slept in a week from drug abuse.
It’s not that there aren’t any normal-looking female faces, there are a few, but the existence of so many ugly ones is just bewildering. Who, apart from maybe ten people total, actually wants to look like a gorilla beastwoman? Some of those faces are so bad that it seems they were made just for people who want to look as ugly as possible. Others are just bland and uninteresting - all that effort was wasted. It’s like making a weapon skin so ugly and dull that almost no one uses it - what’s the point?
The vast majority of female characters I’ve seen use the exact same face with one or two hair variations - which isn’t terrible, but it’s very telling. Somehow, during the game’s development, nobody thought that making a bunch of ugly faces and only a few normal ones, while giving maybe one or two not half-bald long hairstyles out of dozens of bald variations, would lead to most players picking the same exact face and hairstyle every time. One of Fatshark’s “genius” development decisions - on the same level as needing a loading screen just to test another blessing in the psykhanium, or not being able to view strike team members’ loadouts before a mission gets to the ready screen. One of those small, stupid things that make you wonder how they never thought about it while implementing all this.
Then there are the hairstyles. Most are fine for male characters since they’re just variations of bald or short cuts - very male-oriented. But for long hairstyles? Maybe four. Two are bobcuts (basically “Sister of Battle cosplay hair”), one of which is half-bald, and both look off - too much volume or something, like they fit Lord Farquaad better than a Sister of Battle. Another one is long and disheveled with a shaved side for no reason - simply adding the same haircut without the shaved part wouldn’t have broken 40k aesthetics. And finally, there’s one long hairstyle with a bun - finally something that looks normal and not half-bald. Incredible.
What do you mean? We are the customers. If customers want something - and there is a reasonable amount of these customers. Why wouldn’t the company want to make money by selling us things we actually like and ask for? Ever since release, people have been posting about the female characters being ugly and lacking decent hairstyles. That’s literally how markets work - things people don’t want don’t sell, and things people want do. And there’s a larger portion of players who want better hairstyles and face options than those who insist everything is perfect as it is.
It’s not like the people who complain want Barbie dolls fresh from the salon. The complaint is that most options look like abhorrable mutants, with a ton of bald or short cuts and only two long hairstyles that aren’t half-shaved. Amazing. Those who want their characters to look like bald mutant crackheads already can. So, can the others, arguably the bigger group, get something nice too? They could even bundle it as a cosmetic pack or DLC. I’d buy it.
More faces that don’t look like they were beaten daily with a brick while on every hard drug known to men would be appreciated, for both men and women. I’m not asking for supermodels, just normal looking people.
Also give ogryn tusk options separate from their faces.
Everyone knows it’s a marketing tactic to increase helmet sales, duh!!
My goodness, turning up the heat are we?! ![]()

This is such a dumb argument. As if some elite just decided what’s beautiful. No it’s evolution and biology what did that.
As if there’s any other kind.
Except that she has a manly jaw. A handsome woman, they call that.
You don’t have that already. First of all it isn’t a defining characteristic of 40K that all women are horribly unattractive. Second, there are at least two choices of decent looking female faces and everyone is using them for that reason. So this corner you speak of doesn’t really exist anywhere, neither in 40K more generally nor in the actual Darktide game that we play, where the person deliberately picking an unattractive femal face appears to be 1 in 100 or thereabout.
Relatedly, not everyone on the mourningstar looks like a meth addict either. Arguably both Hestia, Sefoni, the Commissar, and Hallowette are attractive. I’m fine with there being the choice to look like terrible scarred dregs, but personally I’d rather there was much more choice (and detailed character customization), including more numerous options for attractive faces and hairstyles. It just is part of the universe’s overall aesthetic.
For my own part I continue to be astonished Fatshark don’t do more to cater to what is clearly the majority of the playerbase that want more of the aesthetic depicted in canonical art.
You have an access to chirurgeon and can change the whole personality and appearence completely. But somehow you can’t make yourself a bit more aristocratic to represent Inquisition better? Coolstory.
Since it’s subjective, it’s up to every each indiviudal. So some people have that opinion the current options aren’t good looking. So they ask for the better ones.
Who’s asking about that level? What is this binary thinking either DT level, or Genshin? Go check offical WH book covers, medias, and promotion materials.
Ah, i see now.
Nope it’s the same old faces that took a nose dive from the ugly tree hitting every branch on the way down, except ogryn of course! Ogryns are beautiful.
Thanks for the fast reply! I posted it and went on Helldivers 2 without checking back. I could’ve gotten my answer so quickly haha. Ogryns are beautiful, you are right.
I’ve read all the other replies too. I don’t remember how to reply quote to every person seperately without making a whole bunch of posts… So I’ll just kind of… You know? Get the general jist out of the way in this post.
We’ve had the discussion where Warhammer 40k = Ugly humans, which is proveably false. If you go to www.warhammerart.com you can see many, MANY, examples of beautiful humans of both the male and female gender. Just because you prefer to play an ugly character does not mean there shouldn’t be more options for those who don’t want that.
The DEI agenda is reaching it’s tail end I feel, thank god, so I was hoping that maybe Fatshark had invested a bit of resources into diversifying (lol) their character appearances. Apparently not though. A shame. This game seems like a lot of fun, but if I can’t look the way I wanna look in a game, I don’t play it. Simple as.
Hope you will all continue truly enjoy this game! I probably won’t ask the same question again next year… Darktide is a 3 year old game now. I’m not sure how likely it is that Fatshark will change course on it’s aesthetics this far into development.
I’m not knocking you but that this is your straw is interesting!
See you next year! ![]()
Well even my wife says they are mostly ugly fem. faces in this and she now plays the one face ![]()
this topic again ![]()
it’s about having options. if a less handsome face is ok, feel free to use it for your character. likewise, others want their characters to look pretty, so they should have this freedom . it doesn’t take away one bit from your options to create your character as you wish.
most people like to look good, even in a game, that’s why the healthy looking faces are the most popular picks, and why we can buy cosmetics for our characters.
as for “pretty people won’t fit the rejects theme”… after level 30, we’re inquisitorial agents, not bums out of jail any more, and we can simply buy whatever new look and personality at the barber for our loot, so why not enjoy life as it’s short anyway.
now for fatshark doing a couple more faces… i’m not sure, as the game was already published on all platforms and good models require some work. and the modelers are probably busy with their next game, with ue5 allowing much more complex geometry. if they add anything it probably won’t be free, but come as part of a new class release, mission pack or whatever commecial, perhaps even at the commodore’s vestures.
Same stuff.
Put a helmet on and be done with it.
It’s 40k and the varlets are perhaps not the ones with the best lives, so looking pretty isn’t a luxury they have.
That being said, I wouldn’t mind having some more haircuts and face-options.
oooh boy after so many flags I can literally hear my ogryn ask :”what, did I do something to offend you”

Sorry to say this to both sides of the argument here, but the fact is this isn’t a priority, even now.
We’re finally just past what many would call 1.0 and we need more content and balance passes.
Any character artists are probably working on some as yet announced title because FS seems very traditional as far as studios go (i.e. release game, use that money to immediately fund and start next game).
When we get more on this topic, I’d put money on us getting less ugly options.
