Disappointing update on Memory Leak Issue

1702481683702017

Really nothing more to say besides the obvious that it’s very frustrating it won’t be fixed before the holidays.

Also annoying that I had too look through the Discord to find it. For something this important a more offical recognition would be nice.

Edit: Realized I accidentally put this in gameplay feedback rather than General Discussion

It’s a live service game. Does the whole company go on break until next february? :astonished:

Not sure the exact date, but roughly yes.

Can someone fill me in on what the memory leak issue is exactly?

Aren’t countries with non oppressive labour laws nice? Hope the sharks all have a nice break they’ve pumped out a lot of great stuff in the last few months.

If you have large inventories of weapons across your characters, it causes some sort of LUA traffic jam that will gurantee a memory crash at some point. It is very infuriating and the only way to avoid it is to restart your game every 2-5 games, at least for myself and the people I play with.

I’m no expert on it, but are they forced to take all their V cay days for Christmas season and the spring season? Would seem weird to me.

Second is leaving the game in a broken state, at least for a seemingly significant portion of the playerbase, isn’t good. Somewhat similar to the hunting ground issue last year, except that wouldn’t cause consistent crashes mid game.

What country is your frame of reference here for curiosity?

I’m American. I know Sweden has different labor laws. I’m wondering if FS is making them take Vacation days at the same time or not.

Also doesn’t change the fact that it looks like they’re going to be leaving the game with a persistent and common crashing issue. For at least 2ish months.

Yeah that’s what I guessed TBH. I want to say more but I’ll bite my tongue and leave it there for now.

Potentially. It’s not unprecedented for them to keep a skeleton crew active during holidays to fix major issues. It sounds like the issue could also be averted by trimming one’s inventory down?

I get you’re trying to do “funny american bad,” however I have not said anything negative about the way Swedish labor laws work. I am expressing that I don’t know how they fully work or how FatShark operates under them.

Again the reason I’m bringing it up is the reason it’s weird for FS is I don’t think they have ANYONE working over the break. Last year support was unavailable, and we had the issue where it was the constant hunting grounds modifier.

I mean I guess. But I don’t want to purge all my inventories of all my different weapons and builds ( I run the extra loadouts mod so have an average of 8-10 builds per character).

Doesn’t help that they officially acknowledged it almost a month ago, and we’ve got nothing since then.

I’m not trying to do a funny anything. Just observed a very clear trend in which people start to get antsy about FS going on holidays and yes it is unsurprisingly very often the people from the country with astoundingly awful workforce treatment. Wasn’t saying you were having a go at their holidays I’m just very wary of the whole “they’re going on holidays and X isn’t fixed!” shtick.

I’m saying there IS precedent. Can’t remember the exact specifics but there was an issue in VT2 introduced just before their holidays way back and it was sufficiently game breaking for them to call some staff back to fix it over the first week of their holidays. Who knows what will happen here :person_shrugging:

its a bad practice, both for their employes and customers.

Hopefully they’re better prepared for the holidays this time with work already done for some events over the holidays, but it is odd that the entire studio shuts down at once rather than rotating the leave about so that everyone does get their leave, but it doesn’t leave the studio dark for 4-8 weeks.

It’s a perception thing, most other live services would have stuff running over the holidays, seasonal events, weekend events, something.

Especially in Darktide’s case where they went on holidays after releasing an incomplete game, touted rotating global modifiers and left it on the whole time on an unpopular modifier that emphasised one of the more unpopular enemies during the whole holiday season, but the cosmetic store still rotated. That’s not “going on holidays” that’s bad management and showing where their priorities were.

It’ll be nice if they improved this year, but the fears are not unfounded.

It’s not ideal but it is what it is and I’m just happy game companies over there are less straight up evil in their treatment of staff than the precedent elsewhere. Prioritising customer satisfaction over treatment of staff is pretty hardcore self reporting IMO.

If they’re losing profit margins over it that really isn’t much of your or my concern.

I mean I hope that happens. I want to emphasize that I’m fine if they go on this long break, but I would prefer if the game was in a mostly stable or normal state. I’m not saying every bug needs to be fixed or ironed out but I would really like this to be fixed before then. I’m not sure how widespread this issue is, but it has at least happened to everyone I play this game with at least once.

Also I really wish they had given a band aid buff to the T Hammers before the break :sob:

At the very least I agree that I much prefer this to stories of massively overworked and underpaid devs over here in the states. It is very disheartening to hear stuff like that.

Yeah a lot of uhhhh, straight number tweaks that would be nice to see lol. T Hammer will have its day again at some point I’m sure.

the fallacy of relative privation, or appeal to worse problems

its a problem, and they should work on it.

No it’s obviously not because these two issues necessarily play into one another. Take that high school level fallacy appeal elsewhere.

It’s easier to force your product into stability and more polish if you don’t give two sh1ts about your workers. We literally see this happen all the time in games Dev. Yes FS clearly have an issue with workflow and probably version control too.

But yes I’m also willing to excuse a bit of that for the places where they do things well, and I do think employee treatment really trumps any of that 10x over, and is sometimes in direct opposition with getting things done quick.

they, are legally forced to give them their vacation days you know? how is Deciding for them = caring? its not?
wanted to see your dauthers play welp can’t had to take holliday when you didn’t wanted to…

again the existance of bad practices does not mean lesser bad practices should be tolarated. if something can be improofed, try to imrpove it.

the fact that companies located in a very different country with different labor laws, can exploit their staff, is reason enough that a company based in sweden is “doing good” by sending them on holiday, okay got it.

your argument crumbles, the moment we aknowledge that NOT sending them on holiday on xmas doesn’t mean they can’t take their free days.

are you implying that, people who think this practice is a problem, are advocating for worse treatment? you have no basis for that…

I mean to an extent yes, in wider gaming discourse I’ve seen it openly said that product quality trumps all else and they don’t give a toss about crunch etc. These views often align, frankly the amount to which people get invested and even emotionally distraught at times over the continuing adding of value to an entertainment product that cost them like 60 bucks raises an eyebrow to say the least.

Anyway this has strayed incredibly far off topic at this point so I say we wrap it up. I do hope they fix this issue soon.

I got the memory leak crash three times. Then I took some time and deleted over 1 million credits worth of items from across my four characters, especially the curios that I no longer need because I have a full set. Once I was done the inventory loads faster and I haven’t crashed since.

It’s not a perfect solution but you can mostly solve the issue by doing this if you get that crash a lot.
