There is little explained story in Darktide and much teasing, hints and outright annoying interactions whenever mentioning the big interest of our Inquisitor. Soo lets theorize… starting with big obvious many have pointed out… the epic story of Beowulf very close to our developer’s homeland. I also think the character names are particularly important, mirroring Christian naming theme of prophetic or the more common foreshadowing of literacy to the story.
Inquisitor Grendyl: Named after the 1st antagonist Grendel. A giant and descendent of Cain. He is disturbed by the sounds of celebration, thus reasonable goes and kill the source.
Captain Biron Wolfer: Named after BeoWulf, a hero who goes around killing monsters until he is eventually poisoned and dies. Speculation is also his previous name is… Tibiron Zola, only translation so far Biron is Strong as Bear? Barn? and Zola is Earth (Italian) / Peaceful (African)
I speculate the story is… instead of dying our hero Wolfer succumbed to the poison of Chaos and has turned evil…
or… perhaps Grendyl is actually evil preventing an exterminatus, and the archetypes still to appear are Grendyl’s Mother and the Dragon (Great Unclean One). Were on the wrong side and Wolfer is actually the hero we need! Zola hasn’t given up on him!!!
Misc thoughts Grendyl is somehow a descendant or has been corrupted by Horus(Cain).
Wild speculation of course and not particularly adept at how these names translate in Swedish or other European dialects that could shed better light on story character’s future.
From my pov and what I’ve read, once someone falls to Chaos I’m not sure there can be a redemption. Death is a Mercy! On the other hand certain characters have purified themselves but its very rare.. I still don’t know Wolfers original motives but would love to see him with an increased role outside from the “face of the L” for Chaos in Darktide.
As far as the Inquisitor, I doubt Grendyl has fallen to Chaos but other peers may see Grendyl as a Radical, solving problems Eishenhorn-like by using Chaos tools against them, or even communicating with Warp essences to solve a bigger picture. It still brings up questions like what is Grendyl doing with the “non-reject” / retinue / agents on-board the ship? They seriously can’t just be standing the whole time.
This all leads me to what I would like to see Darktide evolve into, story-wise. What is the bigger picture? How did Grendyl ears even perk up about this planet, what were they doing before, etc etc.
Also the prison ship we ‘rejects’ came from, where was it coming from and going to? All these questions I wish we got answered from a Book when Darktide originally announced Dan Abnett would help with the writing for the game.
Tangent aside, the history of Grendyl would be nice, but maybe leaving the door open for us to explore was the goal all along.
I think its the opposite, the video you tagged helps prove my suspicsion that Rannick IS a Traitor, Nurgle was a side effect to Grendyl Investigations and Darktide maybe in store for a new enemy faction soon.
Yeah I’m just wildy speculating, her lore videos are more accurate.
The Darktide refers to all sort of boogie men heretics and xenos guessing the term was made lore for game xenos expansion was a plan… I hope genestealers which she also has a video on…
Rannick introducing a Magos Biologist to the ship does bring about a wild a theory of mine. I will check out her videos to see the speculation.
The only basis I can grab onto is from V2. The new enemy faction (as DLC) fought side-by-side to the existing races. Since FS is lazy I think they will do the same and just vomit the new faction on top of the existing one. To the benefit of FS, they do like lore to make sense so I imagine this new faction would have to be on “friendly” terms with Nurgle.
In Ragnars Claw by William King, the Inquisitorial Retinue escorted by Space Wolves, discovers Genestealers. The fascinating thing about these Tyranids is they are infected by a blight. Slower, pox ridden versions. One of the Synapse nodes controlling them has a piece of the amulet they are tasked with obtaining (tainted by Nurgle) wedged into its heart or brain. My wild speculation is that GSC can co-exist with nurgle and I do see it possible for Rannick to be a herald for the final days of a Tyranid invasion.
Although how this is accomplished has left me to wonder and hope that Dan Abnett has laid a nice foundation for FS to work upon so things don’t turn out like the final season of GoT.
She suggest in one video that new factions will be in conflict using new ai developed by siennas necromancer class.
Possible part of the maps will be sectioned off by conflict zones where we transition to new enemy types after.
Other YouTubers do have fun chaos Tyranids as well where they are infected and even enhanced by the chaos gods. I believe there are rare instances of this though have not seen them working directly with a humanoid faction…except maybe through genestealers
After seeing her, my money is on Sefoni actually being a daemonhost in service to the full on Radical Inquisitor Grendyl. The tats, the bindings, and the way she acts are way outside normal psykerdom, and the way she goes ‘Master’ at the end of Mortis Trials is another point towards her being restrained in some way.
Like sure maybe she’s an arrogant psyker in a jar but she looks and acts too inhuman for me to buy it.
I also just heavily dislike Fatshark’s approach to Sefoni’s character design. She’s neither creepy nor mysterious enough physically and it kind of bums me out.
Imagine if her jar was foggy or something where a faint silhouette of her restrained body and a contrasting blue glow of her eyes and tattoos are her only distinguishing features. Instead, we just have a bald woman floating in a jar of clear liquid while wearing the most unappealing set of underwear to ever grace my eyes.
some foggy “vagueness” would have gone a long way.
whole concept is so bland,
right now end of mortis trials i straight up “enemy” mark that btch and unload excess ammo,
in what should pop that soup can holder right open
(yeah simulation an all but even on the mourningstar i have no reason to believe we are unarmed… just sayin )
the amazon episode did a good psyker. shabby, scrawny but until the demon made a pin cushion outta him, he was “believable”
Warning: Mildly NSFW, abandon all hope ye who clicks to unblur.
Those Daemonhost asses bouncing and tiddies jiggling, like National Geographic. Tall statures, thick thighs. I was blown away, never seen that before I landed in Hive Tertium.
