Cosmetics need a rework too, right?

Disclaimer:

  • This is by no means intended to devalue the effort of the artists who have (re-)created countless iconic pieces of armour from/for the Warhammer 40k universe.
  • I am not aware of plans on reworking cosmetics, the addition of more varied “free” options or communication/statements in that regard.
  • I will not dive into premium cosmetic pricing and availability as it is its own mess.
  • I am aware that there are a variety of other more important/interesting features and systems of the game that require work.

Let’s face it, there is a seemingly unnecessary bulk of similar cosmetic options for the current 4 classes, acquirable by completing penances or through the ordo docket cosmetics store on the Mourning Star.
Taking the Veteran as example, there are about 20 sets in said store and 5 available through the CENSORED penances (I’m skipping the newer class penance rewards here, but they are their own group of sets with similarities to the starting prisoner garbs).
Those can be broken down to 14 sets without helmets and 11 sets with helmets, each somewhat varying in accessories on the 3(2) pieces of a set, colour scheme/pattern or icons.

Taking the current weapon cosmetic customization as a basis, these 25 sets could be broken down by a similar system into the following few:

  • 1 helmet cosmetic with 2-3 accessory slots, an icon slot, and either a skin or 1-3 colour selection slots
  • 3 chest cosmetics with a front accessory slot, 1-2 belt and belt accessory slots, 1 glove slot, 1-2 shoulder accessory slots, an icon slot, and either a skin or 1-3 colour selection slots
  • 2 pants cosmetics with a “boot” slot, an icon slot, optionally an accessory slot, and either a skin or 1-3 colour selection slots

Unlocking the initial cosmetic piece and the customization options could remain as it is now, tied to the shop and penances.

(List of current existing variations for the Veteran behind the Summary spoiler)

  • I and a skull
  • Repent on a flag or scroll
  • the Aquilla

Of course you could break it down further, separating shoulderpads, arms/gloves and belt from the chest piece and separating the boots from the pants but that isn’t really relevant to the bulk of similar pieces.

Additionally cybernetics and other prostheses should have their own 1-3 dedicated slots.
So far they are only available through the cash/aquilla shop and are generally a part of a cosmetic piece, but they should integrate well with other pieces too.

  • In most helmets and under the psyker’s hood there is space for a cybernetic eye or two.
  • It shouldn’t matter what pants a zealot wears as they run on a peg leg to their martyrdom.
  • The veteran could have 2 different cybernetic arms after their plasma gun overuse ripped off each one on a different battlefield.

Lastly, a few more basic cosmetics, unrestricted by class, could be introduced.
They could be bound to penances such as injury, successful missions, resource earning/collection or crafting.
For example, a head/eye bandage, aheadset (seen during character creation), a simple “bandit” mask, a blindfold, a bandaged chest or a bare chest.

Don’t forget shoulder slots. 2 spaulders, no spaulders, 1 spaulder on the right, 1 spaulder on the left, spaulder with purity seal, spaulder with autogun rounds (these are all currently present amongst the existing upper body cosmetics).

Man, I would dearly love to be able to switch out the boots on many of the lower body cosmetics…

Thanks I forgot the accessories on the shoulders after counting, edited the original post.

I really want the cosmetics to be reworked, but… It’s relatively unimportant, compared to the myriad other issues the game has (see Pending Action Items for Fatshark ). And to be honest, of all the systems that Fatshark placed in the game, cosmetics are the one I least think are placeholder.

However, I loathe how they implemented cosmetics into Darktide. Forcing players to have accessories and decorations on armour that look either ridiclulous or don’t fit a characters theme (this game has some light roleplay elements, so I consider this an issue). I also HATE that we weren’t allowed to edit the colour/camouflage and accessories on a particular cosmetic.

Seems very unlikely that the ol Fatshark will bother their slow asses to solve this problem when the mountain of unfinished, cobbled together placeholders need replacing first.

Huge yes, there’s so many cosmetics whose textiles and decals I’d wanna change plus many purity seals id wanna take off so they stop clipping into the backpack lol

I don’t likely see them changing it. Especially because they want a reason for the premium cosmetics. The “regular cosmetics” would likely just be not nearly as distinguished or good.

I can add it to the enhancement requests, I think it’s more what scope would we need for the change to be considered resolved.

  • Allow colours to be swapped (like DRG style?)
-Swap more components of the cosmetics (boot and glove slots)
    -Change decals
    -Change armor attachments
-Add more varied “free” cosmetics to penances and ordo cosmetic shop

Everyone needs to get on board with this idea. I made a similar thread months ago asking for the same exact thing. If you are reading OP post, give it a heart!

I adore cosmetics, and the breakup of the existing system would be awesome in my opinion.

A system that has helmet, eyewear, mask, torso, shoulders, elbows, gloves, backpack, belt, pants, knees, shoes would be great. Camo and solid colors could be bought from the commissary and applied to the pieces/weapons separately and the premium store could sell their weekly model containing all the pieces for one premium set as well as a few premium pieces or weapons trinkets like it does now. More free cosmetic sets would be lovely, but the ability to wear the pieces you wanna wear in the color/camo you wanna wear them in (with a little work at the commissary if need be) would be great.

40k has lived by the rule of cool, so why shouldn’t we be able to?

another thing I was thinking about earlier is how unbelievably underwhelming all those cool Veteran sets that are based on BA guard soldiers are, because there is no slider for how MUSCULAR you can be. seriously those recolored acid dog cosmetics would be so cool if you had Arnold arms.

YES! There should be a slider for body mass. If you are level 30 and trust level is at maximum, you should theoretically be getting more rations. The female body type is almost as muscular as the male body type at the moment.

Been saying forever that a cloth/armor/accessory layering system similar to something like the newer Ghost Recon games would have been so much better for encouraging a wider variety of customization.

Say the Vet options are mostly just variations of the standard Cadian shock trooper loadout that’s already in the game. Being able to mix and match shirts, pants, and masks with armor pieces and helmets would create way more subtly unique looks while still allowing the characters to retain the same basic silhouette and stand out from the enemy, while also providing a boost to narrative consistency by letting the characters look more like a rag tag group of conscripts who are given the same basic gear upon recruitment, but inevitably end up customizing and modifying it to suit their needs and tastes as they work their way up. The game kind of does this by simply adding more armor and bits to the more expensive cosmetics, but the way it’s implemented and lack of variety makes it so a lot of people have identical looks, which imo defeats the whole purpose of including character customization at all.

Wanna know a secret? Looking at the shoulders of certain torsos, I’m almost sure that some of the torsos use a rescaled male skeleton. The armored boots that have a knife on the thigh also has an odd bend in the knife on female bodies, though that one might be an effect of shorter than default height. I can’t check that one due to having used all my character slots.

It’s been a meme for a while that most of the cosmetics use the same body type for both male and female body types, since half of them render women mysteriously flat as a board - must include some binders or something under the chest as standard issue lol

With the (preview) release of a (visual) weapon customisation mod, I dare to say the system it accesses exsists most likely in a similar fashion for the character cosmetic items.
