Tottaly agree. And the penalty should apply to any leaving of the game, crash, not crash, disconnect… You should be only allowed to rejoin that game. IF not, wait those 5 minutes.
Beside the point, but it also irks me on a more personal level, becasue seems like most poeple cant wait 2-3 minutes in game, just out of respect for the other team members, out of a sense of solidarity “we are a team that luck brouth totgether and we will try to do our best and help each other”
You should not have to wait anytime on a game you have paid for to play your own way in your own time. If I don’t want to play in a team with ammo hogs, med stim hogs, players that won’t deploy crates, or just general bad players, then I won’t and will leave! I paid for my game not the other forum users of the other 3 players on the screen…“ME”! So you can stick your 5min suggestion where the sun don’t shine, also don’t like what I say then that is a you issue and you should move on and block me!
You saying “just move on” is pretty ironic, seeing you are still replying in this thread (with the same material over and over, mind you). Maybe you should have moved on about 5 replies ago. Doesn’t really look like you have better things to do.
And I didn’t want to say it at first, but you are just plain rude as well. My fault for trying to have a honest conversation with you, while you came in here with bad intentions from the very start.
Yeah that just reads like a heap of copium for not wanting basic standards of behaviour applied to a game that is fundamentally social by nature.
You’re doing the equivalent to throwing a tantrum because somebody told you you’re not allowed to defecate in public.
“It’s MY poop you can’t tell me what to do with it. Just ignore my poop and move on if you don’t like it. MY tax dollars went towards building this footpath so I can poop on it.”
In general telling people they can’t have standards for what social interactions are and are not acceptable is a losing, if not outright self defeating argument.
Usually this type of thing solves absolutely 0% of the issue.
If you’re pissed and leave because you think the team is a bunch of r-tards, the game is garbage jank or the servers are laggy sh*t, it does not matter.
What does matter is “you are not waiting for nothing”. If the game is “bad” and you make it worse, that player is gone = no potential further investments = bad for business.
If the player stays, it will in many cases mean increased frustration = the game is bad/worse in the eyes of the player base.
Then you have the people who are left behind someone that leaves.
The player that left is gone, they’re not coming back so what do you want?
You want someone who you are not already pissed on about leaving = a new player.
You do not want a player rejoining that will be like “oh these damn c*nts again, hell no” and then they leave AGAIN.
So how do you solve it?
You can’t. It won’t be 100% smooth.
You can however somewhat remedy it with trying to fill that spot up again, even with a 5:th player, just in case there was that player who accidentally got legitimately dc:ed.
You can also further bake this into the “quick play” with the join ongoing missions more directly, or if people are for some reason against it, have a toggle to be added in that way more often.
Maybe a “rescue beacon” mission-que, only for those kinds of missions with rewards to players filling those spots.
Why bonus?
Because joining those mission will mean you are far more likely to join a failing mission = you die after joining = you waste your time.
I worked for a company developing a crappy app for stock market trading and even it had like 15 different responces to how app was shut down, including “force” such as ALT+F4 for windows and alternatives for android/IOS.
If you think FS need extra telemetery for such simple thing you’re incorrect.
However, this game also has rewards for successfully completing a mission: Havoc rank, crafting materials and Ordo Dockets, or a progress bar that unlocks a new difficulty level when filled. A defeat, on the other hand, can mean a rank decrease, the progress bar going down and delaying the unlock of a new difficulty level, or time and effort spent without adequate reward. So here too, leavers need to be punished in some form. Today I already finished three Damnation runs that started with four players and ended with only three. In all three cases, the players left without even being downed. They just played and played, then poof — suddenly a bot. And that’s it, no one comes to replace them.
I think it’s important to recognize here that no one (reasonable) is saying that you shouldn’t be allowed to leave games whenever you want or for whatever reason you want. No one has suggested removing the “leave game” button. People are suggesting that there be a consequence for doing so. Freedom does not mean freedom from consequence. You have the freedom to do a lot of things in life that you still don’t do, or do sparingly, because of the consequences they entail.
Personally, I would focus any penalty specifically on players that leave games when they are downed. At least in my experience that constitutes the majority of leavers already, and I think there can be legitimate reasons for wanting to leave games when you are not downed, such as not wanting to play with people that use obnoxious meta builds or with rushers. Focusing on players that only leave when in a downed state would pretty much only capture those that are leaving because they don’t want to wait to be picked up, or people that rage quit. These are the antisocial, unsportsmanlike players that other players deserve some modicum of protection from, at least on Auric difficulty and above.
Furthermore, I would suggest that any theoretical penalty should be preceded by a warning, which would appear if someone has left more than a certain number of games in a row, or if they have left more than a certain number of games within a certain timeframe. The goal should be to penalize the worst offenders, people who serially leave games whenever they get downed, not just anyone who leaves a game once.
I just wanted to thank you for this, it’s probably the best thing I’m going to read all day.
At the end of the day Darktide is a social, team-based game, and it’s reasonable to expect a certain amount of sportsmanship and decorum, at least in Auric difficulty and above.
This would be ideal, and shouldn’t screw over people that leave now and then for other reasons. Would include hogtied people with it as well (but I think that was implied). Then it also fixes the problem where people leave the moment they think the mission is doomed, and other people quickjoin into a failed mission screen.
If this happens so often that a 5 minute penalty becomes a problem, then I’m not sure that person even really enjoys the game (excluding server lag. But then it shouldn’t help to queue into another game, because the game uses dedicated servers).
You already get a bonus by using quickplay, though, and having a chance to join a game where everone is dying and on fire is kind of what you signed up for.

If you leave because of people and use quick play you could get into the same game, A 5 min penalty would likely mean you wouldn’t, but then again so could a matchmaker that doesn’t let you.
And having people join in faster in general would replace that player.
If the game is janky, perhaps it had to do with the map or player match up or your hardware - changing the mix might work, but likely not, depends.
If you have a server issue the dedicated servers could be different machines and potentially vary.
Most likely when a player leaves like that it is because of how they feel, so it’s the first option.
Even if they do not enjoy playing they could still choose to continue playing and enjoy the next game.

Yes, hence the “further”.
Let that be that 5/4 player, expand on patching the janky games where you are left without a full team, late game joins etc.
Possibly waiting longer to join or what other parameters you’d like to improve matchmaking of existing games. Cross difficulty, expired join-selection maps?
