Will Darktide still have players once Space Marine 2 comes out

It’s the fellas that did WWZ and probably will play kinda the same but nids instead of zombies.
That game was fun for a while
But probably not gonna be some super deep systems.

It looks a fair bit more ambitious than WWZ to me. As far as the depth of the systems, time will tell what they actually feel like but I’d just say that deeper isn’t always better (not in that way you dirty dogs). Darktide has a lot of depth in its crafting system but it also happens to be the most contentious part of the game. Overcomplexity could just as easily be used as a synonym in that example. As long as the systems offer meaningful and diverse choices for the player to make in how they play, then they’re serving their purpose effectively.

I think it totally depends on how much re-playability those coop features will bring. While i do belive darktide will stay alive almost no matter what (the past 2 years should be proof of that) i also think its stupid to not think that some 40k fans might not make the switch.
But all of this presumes that SM2 is actually a good game.

That basically sums it up. I really hope I don’t have to sign up to another forum to scream into the void but so far my optimism remains intact.

As a note i don’t think that Darktide is really going to die when SM2 comes out but i think what will hit it harder is the slow bleed of other summer releases hitting it.

I think some people will swap over to Space Marine 2 but there is just a sheer volume of games either coming out or updating that is going to be crazy to keep up with.

Even this upcoming week Starship Troopers: Extermination is releasing a day before Darktide’s update with a new map and a change to the gameplay that makes bug bodies persistent and changes the environment.

I’m pretty sure Helldivers 2 has an update planned for summer and will be putting out new weapons, new gamemodes, or some other new content.

The number of indie games released is once again staggering with already released ones getting updates. Abiotic Factor as an example has been posting almost weekly updates to their upcoming content.

That’s not even getting into the steam summer sale kicking off and getting a ton of interest with other games. TBH main thing i see happening is people not really caring about the new content and instead getting enticed to play other stuff when they realize the new update might only have 1 map, a few guns, and not much else going on for the entire summer.

I know a lot here are about the “itemization”. But for me, it is about the game interest for me. And to be honest, what keep me entertained?

  • New content (missions / weapons)
  • Good systems
  • Gameplay with lot of replayability

Must say that the point 1 is deceiving on DT. My impression is that they don’t have the shoulders for 2 projects, and they wanted to start 3.
The 3rd is the point where Darktide is really good at.
Point 2 needs explanations. Actually, the ONLY real good system is the talent tree.

about DT (to explain, just if you’re curious about that)

Other systems of DT and my feelings about them:

  • combat system: nothing to say on the overall system. It is the core gameplay and everybody is agree that this point is excellent
  • crafting system: bad… really bad
  • cosmetic system: worse system even seen. FS redefined micro transaction into macro ones and worse than everything we have no freedom on our cosmetics. No, Fatshark, recolors are still not acceptables!
  • equipment system: good enough. Must say that, keeping same weapon for all the mission can be seen as limited compared to HD2 (how many times I wanted to test something and ended with the gun of someone else? cause the gun tested was… BAD). I would have preferred a system main weapon and side arms… but I don’t think they should put their hand on this…
  • penance system: I don’t care of it at all
  • shop systems: here several problems:
    • Shops don’t refresh enough, maybe a refresh system should be implemented.
    • Brunt has a big problem. Paying 800k to get something acceptable is not acceptable.
    • We need several other shops: a forge (to change the modifiers of our weapons), a shop to exchange materials and ordos
  • Weapon system: a weapon customization system would have been 100 thousand better than the variant system. Variant system is really BAD and should be replaced
  • Difficulty system: there are things that are broken in this area. We used to have mass hordes. And now, we have tiny hordes. What happened? we have been too efficient and there are less poxwalkers?
  • Balance: my god… DT is better than HD2 on this, (with a lot of time to achieve that) but when the obviously OP weapons will be balanced? Fatshark, you have the metrics like I see them every days. Revolver, plasma gun are really above everything (sure, there may be other weapons also, FS has the metrics). And we still have weapons that underperforms. Nerf the OP ones before putting your fingers on the ones that underperform, but CONTINUE the balance work. Several months that the plasma has this infinite cleave that is a problem. And revolver is a problem on a veteran when it can one shot everything.

sure, I may have forgotten things… but these things (systems) are what make games great, or not.
I wait DT on balance, hope something for the hordes and would really be pleased with reworked systems for weapons (weapon customization), cosmetics (for the drip). But at the end of the day, the main problem is still the delay between every content drop, that and the lack of communication. We are at 2 days of a patch… and I still don’t have any idea of what will come. I know that there will be a boltpistol,. a snow map, several ogryn weapon. But I did not see any video about this map or these weapons. And that’s really wrong.

About the game SM2… I don’t think it is the same game. HD2 / Starship trooper are more in competition with DT. SM2 is in same universe, but that’s all. Everything will be around the campaign. It will attract players that love warhammer 40k as regulars. But, if I take it, I don’t think I would play the coop. I did not in Deathloop or RDR2 etc. I am sure I would not in SM2 if I play it…

I wonder if it’ll have talent trees.

The talent trees of DT are just a skill tree with a different name. Those are in SM2 as well.

Ooo I didn’t see skill trees. Maybe I missed a video.

My Favourite thing about SM1 was the Last Stand mode. Just you and a team vs waves of progressively harder enemies. Im hoping they have it in SM2!

Well that’s a reason I seen with WH40K games, most of the time having players that don’t care for the universe is pretty sad, because it is its own amazing story and its lore is woven of many things. Whenever I have played Darktide with people that do not even give any care of the universe it has been pretty sad, its like people going to a punk rock show yet not caring for anything “punk rock” smh

Furthermore an even worse issue is when joining a mission like Excise Vault to get the penance for “insert all samples within five seconds” I was given some really toxic responses by players that didn’t give any heed to the game play, they were just on to be slaughter hounds and talk mad gab at players such as myself whom are playing as hard as Auric players do (as I have some auric achievements) then call me a trash player as well as use slurs, throw shade on WH40K, and trash talk to feel like they are something special. For fans like myself that love the game, that is one element that grinds my gears bc it reminds me of the jocks in high school that got into Halo and were flipping our tables when we were playing Space Hulk or a WH40K skirmish on lunches.

Honestly they could increase the player count if they ever added in something more then new weapons and maps. I feel like a new class or even a mode could increase people joining. Ive asked this before but I kinda wish we could join other players games as a enemy and look for ways to sabotage it I think a lot of people would hate it but it would sorta add in a counter play that would make playing solo more enjoyable when your just waiting on a auric damn queue.
