I don’t think it’s impossible to make a dual weapon kit that is fun that is composed of a Chain Sword and a Laspistol. But I do think that there is 2 options for Dual weapon kits.
Skyrim method: Let you pair 1h weapons freely
Pro: let you pair weapons as you see fit; doesn’t require much work
Con: Dual weapon kits don’t really bring anything and the weapons don’t work together; need action rework (Attack/heavy; block/push; special)
VT2 method: FS create bespoken Dual weapon kits (VT2
Pro: Each dual weapon kit is a separate weapon kit that work on its own, doesn’t need an action rework
Con: Take longer for the same amount of weapon kits
Like if we take 4 weapon as part of an example:
Chain Axe
Catachan Sword
Catachan Dagger
Laspistol
If we go with the Skyrim method, other than having to rework the attack animations that actually have the 2nd hand be used, it’s relatively easy to have them all switching up, but they wouldn’t be that interesting.
On the other hand, if they do it with the VT2 system they can give each their own feeling:
Twin Chain Axe (Base/legacy set based on VT2’s Twin Axes)
Twin Catachan Swords (Base/legacy set based on VT2’s Twin Elven Swords)
Twin Catachan Daggers (Base/legacy set based on VT2’s Twin Elven Dagger)
Catachan Sword and Dagger (Base/legacy set based on VT2’s Elven Sword and Dagger)
Catachan Sword and Dagger (Base/legacy set based on VT1’s Rapier)
Like even on those kits that share the Catachan Sword, they shouldn’t just be reused Catachan Swords attacks that only use the swords, they should have the character use both weapon at the same time (at least in heavies, and mix them up in the light at minimum)
Eg: Bardin’s Twin Axe (previous video) vs Axe and Axe&Shield
Reuse the model, not the weapons.
Probably, one of the reason I think they’ve been slow to do Dual wield weapons is actually the cosmetics system, where they sold 1h weapons that would probably be used for dual weapons and they would want to be able to use the skins, hopefully they work out a system that let the weapon skins be changed separately
I think how you broke down the two options is great, and you point out pros and cons, which I don’t disagree with at all. Keeping the models and making new kits seems like the best way to do it for the player, but will take more time.
Although, and I personally consider this pretty unimportant, it does mean that players would technically have to level the ‘same weapon’ multiple times across different kits. Not a huge deal I don’t think.
Hmm, okay yeah I hadn’t considered the skins thing. Bit awkward, but uhh… you know, the “For the drip” mod has a good solution to that problem maybe Fatshark could borrow some ideas from it? or you know, just incorporate something like it!
Non-issue, they would be considered different weapons, like Power Maul and Shield&Battlemaul
Would require changes to the server system (how the game communicate how your character and weapons look to other players) and would cause quite a lot of legal headaches as they’ve already sold variants of stuff.
Would it be nice, yes, will it happen. The chances are abysmally low
A YouTuber, actually. I think she might do streams but I’m admittedly not very knowledgeable about her. I’ve got her as my profile picture because my friend and I had an inside joke about our respective hair colours at one point, mine being blue and hers being red. My friend agreed to set her profile picture to a fire engine if I set mine to this “Daisy” character.
Here’s the YouTuber’s channel if you’re interested:
