Dual weapons

I just really want dual weapons. I want to dual wield chain-swords and chain-axes. I also want the pistal and sword combos as well.

Edit: I fixed it

Duel weapons → weapons used for 1 vs 1 fight
Dual weapons → two weapons used together

Dual wielded weapons seem to be a relatively popular thing, and they have been requested for darktide on multiple occasions.
They do exist in Vermintide 2, so there is a chance.

Would you like to hear about the new Mk IV Dual sword?

Setting spelling concerns aside, there’s are a number of reasons dual-wield weapons aren’t terribly common.

In tabletop 40k they’re a popular visual for static models, usually in some sort of dramatic pose, but beyond that they’re very awkward. Two handed weapons are common across nearly every force and period in human history, dual-wielded weapons are not. When you look at actual fighting styles and historical fencing manuals that use two weapons, the second weapon is usually a shield or a smaller weapon like a dagger. Biomechanically, you really can’t properly wield two swords or pistols at once, and animating that tends to look very weird (in effect it ends up usually being the character rapidly switching between weapons rather than organically wielding both together).

As is, we basically have the sword/pistol combo in play, that’s well represented by just taking a pistol and sword. That works about as it should. What we don’t have is stuff like dual-wielding large melee weapons like chainaxes and the like, which even in 40k such weapon combos are far less common among Imperial forces than among cultists, gangers, and xenos. Really the only class where it’d be appropriate might be the Zealot.

I honestly don’t think any of that really matters. I wouldn’t exactly say that 40k is known for grounding its melee combat elements in historical fact and there’s plenty of stuff in the game of dubious feasibility already.

That being said, I don’t think that either of the two chain weapon examples would work that well or make much sense what with their alt functions. Seems like it would either just look really odd or be really OP. Probably both. The zealot and ogryn could both use some akimbo melee weapons for sure though, especially the latter. Ogryn is big and powerful so any weight or chunkiness related issues can be put aside. Give em a pair of axes or cleavers and I think that could work like an upscaled version of Slayer Bardin’s axes and adds a faster, sweeping weapon to its arsenal. We can even see something like this in some of the concept art and ingame art already.

As for the zealot, there I’m less sure. Outside of some generic dual short blades of some kind, I don’t know what options there could really be.

I’m not a big fan of the idea that ogryns should be dualwielding berserkers, it’s sort of conflating the ogryn fantasy with other unrelated things. They’re big dumb strong ogres, not furious berserker dwarves. I’d rather they get weapons like a big lead pole pipe or brass knuckles if anything.

I think when it comes to the human classes i’d generally much rather like to see melee + ranged combo weapons, too

I think with the branching skilltrees we have, there’s room for both. You can already make what is essentially a berserk type build for the ogryn and some variant of that is very common amongst the playerbase anyway. They’re not mutually exclusive and both would be worthwhile additions.

VT2 had quite a few weapon sets that have 2 weapons.
Twin Hammer (Bardin and Slatz), Twin Axe (B), Twin Sword (Kerillian), Axe & Falchion (Sa), Sword and Maul (Kruber), Twin Dagger (Ke), Sword & Dagger (Ke)

Quite a few could return as “legacy” variants with then introducing the new variants on the side

Human: Catachan Sword & Dagger; Twin Catachan Sword; Twin Catachan Dagger; Twin Chain Axe

Ogryn: Knife and Club

I found this really interesting, and not something I’d considered. Of course you’d use one hand to block - meaning you’re in close - so the second weapon makes sense to be a stabby thing rather than a big swish of a sword.

And … you can get so much more power in a 2h swing than one handed that it probably makes much more sense to do one big, 2metre swish of a long sword than to try and block or dodge that, then land a blow from half a metre away.

As for dual wielding in this game, I don’t mind. I felt the VT2 shade twin-dagger animation was a bit OTT but it’s no more silly than being able to swing an axe twice a second, every second.

Honestly Brute dual-wielding should incorporate his other hand for violence. Throw a set of knuckle dusters on or even a gauntlet. A true dual wielding one should be reserved for a Berserker Ogryn enemy type (aka what the Mutant model is based off).

It is similar but not exactly the same

Would love to see on as a “Monster” for the Scabs

But no sense gating them from the players, they are “easier” to do (models already existing), but are absolutely awesome to use in VT2.

The only thing I really hope they change compared to VT2 in general would be for us to be able to change the skin of the weapon separately
